Hi, I am doing some research for my Brother in Law - Robert Gray from Brighton, Sussex. He has asked me to research his parent's tree but I am having difficulty locating the families. Any help would be appreciated.
His Father was Frederick Ellis Gray b. Abt. 1915, Oxford, d. Abt. Jan 1983 Brighton. m. Abt. 1937 Ivy Constance May Coulson b. 1910 Cambridge d. Feb 1988 Brighton.

It would help you if you could get Frederick Ellis Gray's birth certificate. You would then be able to find his parents names and then work your way back to the 1901 census. And through the 1901 census you could then go further back.

Hi
Have looked up his death record Jan 1983.
Date of birth is given as 30 July 1911.
A birth for 3rd q 1911 lists ...Frederick E Gray
mmn Montague
district Wycombe
vol 3a page 1911.

possible marriage FREDERICK GRAY 1907 at WYCOMBE QTR.JAN/FEB/MAR. VOLUME 3A PAGE 1156.
COUNTY, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, OXFORDSHIRE
On the same page as Frederick Gray is Agnes Alice Montague.
-
Could only find one Agnes Montague living in High Wycombe in 1901 that would fit the bill.
1901 CENSUS RG13/1347/91/5.
James Montague age 49 Born Buckinghamshire occ. working on railway
Charlotte Montague age 45 Born Buckinghamshire
Elizabeth Montague age 20 Born Camberwell London
John Montague age 18 Born Camberwell London occ. painter
Agnes Montague age 16 Born Camberwell London occ. domestic servant
James Montague age 14 Holborn London occ. bakers assistant
Joseph Montague age 12 Born Holborn London
Alfred Montague age 9 Born High Wycombe.
YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO WORK YOUR WAY BACK FROM THIS SIDE OF THE GRAY-MONTAGUE FAMILY (if this is the right agnes montague).
THE OTHER SIDE IS GOING TO BE MORE DIFFICULT

Thanks for your help on this guys.
I cannot understand what I did wrong here. I inputed the data correctly on both Ancestry & free BMD and nothing came up ???
I am still having trouble with tracking down his marriage to Ivy Coulson in Abt. 1937. I have expanded it to 20 years and tried Soundex and nothing happens.

Hi....
I found it through the free searches on Ancestry. You have to go quater by quarter and sometimes its a trawl. I looked up his death and as you say was Jan 1983 q1. That lists date of birth as 30 July 1911.
Under 3rd q 1911 the only Frederick E Gray had a mothers maiden name of Montague. The district is Wycombe.
Wozzel then found a possible for his parents marriage to give some leads.
A guide for the marriage of Frederick to Ivy @ 1937 would be when was first child born.
I will start to look for you.

Hi
Found the marriage 1937
Frederick Gray m Constance Coulson in Brighton q2 1937.
If you order the cert it will confirm their fathers names.
Vol 2b page 565.
She was married as Constance not Ivy Constance.
General searches on both ancestry or freebmd will not bring up info for this date only up to @1915.

I have just been told that -
"If you check the June quarter 1937 against Gray you'll find Frederick married Coulson in Brighton registration district 2 b 565 - Ivy is listed as Constance Coulson not Ivy."
Thanks again
