Title: Cathcart Old Parish Churchyard
Post by: daval57 on Friday 29 June 07 02:41 BST (UK)
I'm going to have a look around this over the weekend.
I live a 10 minute walk from it (have done for 37 years) and only recently heard that one of my ancestors is buried there.

Anyway, the point.....

Does anyone have any names they want me to look for?

I know the graveyard is very run down and a lot of stones have been vandalised so I'm not sure what results I can get.

I'm happy to have a look though and take photos for anyone interested.

Dave

Thanks Dave. They seemed to move around alot.

Michael died 1924 aged 73 at St. James Street,  Glasgow in District of Pollockshields. Elizabeth Jane (Eliza Jane) his wife died 1929 same place aged 78. Two children of Michael & Eliza Jane that I know, Agnes & Sarah were born in Cathcart late 1880s.

My direct Dorman was born in Crossmyloof (registration district Cathcart, Glasgow today) with earlier residences for this family in West Kilbride. A Great Aunt is buried as a babe in West Kilbride in 1905. Earlier residences for my Dorman's include Cathcart, Hutchesontown, Campsie, Leswalt and Stranraer.

Early days so far but I'm surprised no more requests.
Did the same thing for Lauder 2 weeks ago and only got 1 request (that time from Oz).

Sorry to be pedantic but the area in Glasgow is Pollokshields (no c).  It might make a difference if you're searching for something.  There are also two areas in Glasgow called Pollok and Pollokshaws - don't get confused - different places altogether.

Co-incidentally, I've got ancestors in Hutchesontown, Glasgow and in Campsie - were your family millers / millwrights?

Crossmyloof brings back memories.  Only a mile away from where I live now.  Used to be an indoor ice skating rink there which i went to in the 70's.  Great fun.  Demolished now and there is a supermarket there now.  Shame.

Anyway, I'll see what I can find in the churchyard but as I said earlier, I know a lot of the stones have been vandalised - graffiti / knocked over.

Hi Dave

Got my fingers crossed. Checked my PAF and did a typo. Good to know about others. Michael Dorman was a gardener and earlier Dormans were farm servants. I've not come across a miller yet other than the surname and those were weavers.

Cheers,
Linda

Nothing yet.
Walked past it today as i do most weekends but tried to get in today for the first time.  All 3 gates securely padlocked.  I assume to prevent vandalism.
There is one bit of the wall which I will be able to get over quite easily but it was a very wet day here.
I'll return during the week in older clothes (dark coloured and a black ski-mask) and climb in.
A lot of the stones are in poor condition but I could see at least a few which are still in good condition, hopefully the ones which will be of interest to us.
I'll get back to you but probably not until next week now.

I am behind you all the way (at least in spirit :-) ) and so glad you are going to this trouble.  Seems it is a way with some of the small older cemeteries in the cities.

Just to keep you interested.
It's not clear from the description but all that remains is the tower and clock.
When I'm there I'll try and take a photo from the same angle.  I'll ask the people to move out the road first.

I've also just found this post on another forum, co-incidentally by another Dave.

Thanks Dave. I imagine this would have been the church my grandmother was baptised in. She was born in Crossmyloof in 1908, so I cannot access her birth record yet. I have saved a copy of the Church pic.

Hello David

When you visit the cemetery, could you also watch for George & Agnes Miller. Appears I have another more recent line of Millers. Agnes Jessie Dorman married George Miller in District of Pollokshields in 1921. Agnes was born 23 July 1887 Cathcart.

Much appreciated.

Thanks for the laugh Dave, loved your graphic description of how you intend entering the place  ;D

I saw you were surprised not many folks had asked for you to take a look-see.  I don't know where my folks are buried before late 1800's and possibly a sibling of my direct line could have been buried at Campsie where he worked.  He was one of the sons of John Crum(b) & Lilias Glen who moved between Glasgow, Dalnottar & Calton.  Their sons born between 1768 and 1786 and their sons too spread themselves about a bit.

Wishing you happy scrambling.

Nice Photos Dave!

Did you have your wee kit-bag ready to dive across to Cathcart when the sun decided to shine?   ;)

I met up with an e-friend a couple of weeks ago and had arranged to take her to St. Ninians's Churchyard in Stirling. The main gate is always locked but there's a sneaky wee gate round the back so I thought we'd have no problem getting in - WRONG - it was locked too.

Not that it was a problem however - we both just scaled the back wall and got in that way. I'm sure a video will turn up someday on one of those 'You've been Framed' sort of programmes of two 'young' ladies heaving each other over a wall. Our antics must have been a right sight for sore eyes - her poor husband was mortified!

Are you planning any return visits by any chance?

Any specific names you want me to look for or just any old Polloks (rhyming slang?)

 ;D  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Any old Polloks that you can find!!

I don't actually know if any of them are there. If they are, I would imagine their stones to be a bit on the posh side as they were a family of 'landed gentry' and had various properties and lands all over Glasgow and Edinburgh but please don't exclude any of the more humble ones.

The ones I would be particularly interested in would be:

William Pollok died c1829, his wife Ann Whyte died c1830
Their son William Pollok, date of death unknown
Their son John Reid Pollok, date of death unknown
Their son Major Robert Pollok died 23.9.1895
Their son Walter Whyte Pollok, Writer & J.P., died 1899

+ as I said, any other Polloks (or Pollocks) you happen to come across.

Thanks Dave

Anne.

Unlikely, Pollokshields a fair bit away.
What names are you interested in though and I'll look the next time I go.
I also still plan to visit cemeteries in Pollokshaws / Pollokshields but having difficulty finding the time.

Hi Dave,

I was up in Glasgow for a couple of days working at the Fopp stores, only managed to have time for a couple of hrs checking out Pollokshields, most of which involved me getting lost.  I'd be grateful if you could keep an eye open, I'm looking for Archibald Bryson d.~1949 and Ellen Bryson d.1910.  Thanks very much.

Thanks.

Won't have access to the computer for a few days but will lt you know the results

Sorry for delay but my computer broken.  Using mothers at the mo.

First the ones with no results - sorry.
No Edgars, no Brysons, no Dormans (2nd time I've looked for this).

Got a few Millers that I missed first time around (had to clear away some grass and earth that was covering the stones.

Best result is for Pollok - got the one's I think that you are looking for Anne.

I've taken photos of all the stones that might be relevant but not very clear so I've transcribed them.

Send PMs if and I'll send copies of photos and full transcript.

Miller:

Mary Miller wife of Edward Murray - Mary died 27/2/1926, Edward died 8/3/1930

Children of Matthew and Ann Millar (nee Watson)
Elizabeth died 1844 age 6
Margaret 1852 9
Alexander 1860 19
Elizabeth 1869 17
Annie 1860 19
William 187? 27?
Maggie 1 Dec 1878 21
Agnes 27 Jan 1901

Ann Watson, wife of Matthew 22 Jan 1881 63
Matthew Millar 22 Dec 1903 90

Grandson of Matthew and Ann
Matthew M Murray 19 May 1876 10 months

Pollok:
William Pollok died 14 July 1829 age 53
wife: Ann Whyte 4 Apr 1830 age 42(I wrote this down as 1880 but I may have misread stone - will check but I'm sure it must be 1830)
Son: William died 16 Aug 1847 age 31

PM on it's way Dave!

I'm 99% sure that these are the Polloks I've been searching for.

I downloaded the Wills for both William and Ann and had presumed William died in 1829 and Ann the year after but didn't have an exact date of death for either of them. They had property all over Glasgow and ended up in a 'Country House' in Swinton, near Baillieston which was only demolished in the 1990's after a fire. I knew two of the families who lived in it during the sixties as I lived not too far away.

You've made my day weekend!

Thank you very much!

Still planning to go to Southern Necropolis and Sighthill.

Totally selfish me!
I'll be visiting for ME ME ME.
Seriously though, it is no effort to look for other names.
I will not go out of my way to look for names that aren't connected to my tree.  However, I've written down names of certain bods on RC on the off chance that I'll find something worthwhile for them.
I put a separate post on RC a while back about Sighthill and was a wee bit cheeky - I basically said, no guessing.
I'm kinda prattling here, which is my wont.
Long story short, if I see a familiar name when I'm hunting, I'll take the photo and write it down.
Cathcart was easy, very small.
Prattle prattle blah blah

Thanks to Rita!

I'm going to look at the other cemetery as soon as I can.

I'll take all your names again and hopefully get a result this time.

I feel really embarrassed!  :-[ :-[ :-[

Hello,
While going through my mother's papers I found two death announcements. One is for Janet Allan Cameron who died on 11 Dec 1918 and the other is for Janet's mother Catherine Clark Allan who died on 28 November 1916. Both were interred in Cathcart cemetery. Has anyone ever seen a gravestone with the name "Allan" on it? I have no other information as to location. I realize the cemetery is not well maintained but should anyone see their names or those of other Allans in that time period I would love to hear from them.
Regards,
Nan

Hello Dave,

Are you still climbing walls at Cathcart Old?  I'm new to family history, so very late on this topic.  My 3x great grandfather was Session Clerk in Cathcart Parish Church in the first half of the 19th century.  He died 13th January 1854 and I wondered if he might be buried in Cathcart.  His name was James Bell and he was a schoolmaster.  His wife was Jane Bell (m.s. Kerr)  and perhaps she's there too, although she died in Callander.

Have you come across these names in your visits?

Fiona

Sorry Fiona, I've not been for a while.  I used to pass it regularly on the way to visit my mother, but I don't do that any more.  The last time I passed, the wall had been repaired and I never had my grappling hook and climbing gear with me.

I did get a chance to have a wander a while back when the University was carrying out a detailed survey.  They promised to get back to me, but never did.

I might be able to put my hands on my notebook in which I kept a note of all the names I came across.  I'll have a look.

Dave.

No luck in locating my notes.  I had a good isea where they would be, but they're not there.  I have a sneaking suspicion that they were in a shoulder bag that I lent to a friend and have never had returned.

I recall that the survey was carried out for a thesis by Peta Glew at Glasgow Uni. archaeological department  Was probably about 3 years ago now, maybe a bit longer, but it might be worth contacting the uni.to ascertain whether they still have the MI's.

Many of the stones were damaged, buried flat or simply couldn't be read.  1840;s isn't too bad so if they were there, they might still be legible.

Not having much luck I'm afraid.  There is a little mention of the survey I mentioned at the bottom right of the articles here (the link should take you straight there, open full screen, then there is a zoom slide).
