Hi,
I have just obtained my Great Grandfathers birth record.
It states that William Douglas Brown was born on 24th June 1885 at Castle View, Devizes Road, Fisherton Anger, Alderbury, Wiltshire.
Does anyone know where I could find any information about "Castle View"?
My searches have proved fruitless so far.
Many Thanks, Paul.

Paul - Have you contacted the Local Studies Section in Salisbury Library ?
I know they have a number of old maps from this period, so they may be able to at least pinpoint the location of 'Castle View, Devizes Rd'.
I did manage to find out that 4 years earlier on the 1881 census, a family called Lampard were living in Castle View.
If you have full Ancestry access, you could view the actual image to see what other houses/farms were mentioned in the vicinity.
There is a Hill Farm still around and another Farmhouse & Cottages (whose names escapes me at present)

The wires have got a bit crossed somewhere. Devizes road is one of the main routes out of Salisbury (rode along it on my bike every morning...). Fisherton Anger is a village now subsumed by Salisbury (hence Fisherton Street which leads eventually to the Devizes Road). Alderbury, however, is a village the other side of Salisbury off the Southampton Road (used to go there every weekend). It must be about five miles from Fisherton Anger & it's still a 'proper' village, not absorbed into a town.

Maggott,
Alderbury was the Registration District which included Salisbury & Fisherton Anger until 1895.
The Registration District then became known as Salisbury

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, very kind of you to take the time.

Hi Kanskar Alderbury - weird. I know lots of notional registration areas are remote from civilisation but that one is whacky. Still good to know

Paul,
I was able to get down to the Local Studies Library.
There are two possible locations for 'Castle View' from Maps at the time.
1. The Lampards were living in a house called Castle View Cottage in 1881. I have been able to trace it's location to what is now Meadow Road in Salisbury.
2. There was also a Castle View Terrace on the Devizes Road - these are about 4 houses that still stand today on the corner of Devizes Road and Highfield Road.
Were your Brown's in the same location in 1891 ? (6 years after William Douglas Brown was born)

Hi Kanskar,
Thanks so much for taking the trouble to look this up, it's very kind of you.
This Castle View Terrace looks like the most probable location as it was stated that it was on Devizes Road, on William Douglas Brown's birth record.
Unfortunatly by 1891 they had moved to Bristol so I can't be sure.
I will certainly take the time to have a look at the houses that are still there.
Many Thanks again, Paul. :D

Nicky,
Castleview Cottage (if still standing) is now in Meadow Rd.
If you wanted to go and look to see if there is a sign or plaque on the wall - you would need to head down York Rd and turn right into Meadow Rd - the cottage if still there would be on the right hand side.
