Title: John O'Connell from County Cork
Post by: Rondo on Thursday 09 December 04 11:42 GMT (UK)
Greetings from sunny Yorkshire

We are trying to establish whether or not we have enough detail to go any further. Or wait until we stumble across someone else's Tree!

We have John O'Connell born around 1817 in County Cork. Also Mary ?Dempsey? his wife born in County Cork about 1827. We pick them up in 1854 in Hackney when eldest son Jeremiah is born, and then in 1861 1871 1881 Censuses until they pass away in Hackney. John is AgLab

Question - is there any point in asking for research into Parish Registers or Griffiths Valuation?

Best Wishes to all

Ron and Dorothy Ellis in Yorkshire

Hi,

If none of the census give a place of birth more specific than Co Cork, and you haven't found their marriage in England, the possibilities are limited with such common names. Co Cork valuation was taken between 1851 and 1853 so they may be on it and may not. So may many other John O'Connell households so how would you know if you had the right one? If there are only a limited number, you could try going to parish records for marriages and hopinf he named one of his sons after his father...

Hello Ron
You may remember me contacting you about the Dempseys of Cork a few years ago.  I have had a breakthrough with mine.  The UK 1911 census requests that the parish of birth is entered and my Nelly Dempsey (aka Ellen Dimsea, Dimsey etc) enters her birth as Dromdaleague (between Dunmanway and Skiberreen).  I thought you may have luck doing the same for Mary.  Julia Henry
