Looking for any information or any advice on tracking down:
Nicholas QUINN. Co Down single; a labourer aged 21 and his brothe William QUINN aged 18, arrived in Dunedin , New Zealand on board 'S.S.Arawa ' on 24 Dec 1884; left Plymouth 8 Nov 1884 PL/DP
==================
Nicholas & William were originally from Kilkeel, Co. Down.
======
They first went to Australia to a place called Bendigo, made some money and then moved on to New Zealand where they bought 5000 acres on the South Canterbury Plains at a place called WAIMATE.
Any help greatfully appreciated,
Fiona,
IGP County Down Coordinator

Hi Fiona,
A great place for you to start looking for your Quinns is:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nzlscant
Type Quinn into their search engine and you'll get dozens of hits. I've already spotted Nicholas and William but I'll leave the fun up to you.
Cheers,

Wonderful!!! I didn't expect so much help and so quickly!!!!!

I hope I didn't get a bit carried away. A closer look at the Nicholas and William I saw shows that are a bit earlier than your ones.
NZ Archives site http://archway.archives.govt.nz has files for Nicholas Quinn of Makikihi, but I think he could be the other one as well. Ditto William Quinn. Look for files at Timaru and possibly Dunedin and/Christchurch.

I am also beginning to think that they may have had an uncle Henry Quinn with them. So all the Quinns and all the dates are worth looking at. Nicholas wasn't too common a name (compared with William) so there may be a link to the older Nicholas as well. Here's hoping......

Hi Fiona
try this site for the Waimate Cemetery
www.waimatedc.govt.nz
lots of Quinns here, including Williams and William Henry.

me again
if it proves to be the right family in the Waimate Cemetery, let me know, as i visit Waimate regularly and am happy to take headstone or plot photos for fellow gene's.

Hi I live in waimate and will take some photo's if it is needed. Also we have a Quinn's Arcade - the first shopping centre or something in New Zealand. It is an old building just purchased by the Waimate Project committee with the thought of doing it up and reopening it. I'm not informed further. However we have a really good Musem if you contact them they may be able to help.

Hi Fiona,
If you go here http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/AUS-VIC-GOLDFIELDS/2007-08/1187867557 then you will see that someone in Christchurch, NZ is also onto the case of the Quinns. But I can't find the original post which would have the email address you would want to contact the person! >:(
Cheers
