Title: New Member researching traveller family
Post by: ukk9 on Saturday 23 June 07 19:04 BST (UK)
Hi there

My name is Steve. I am currently researching the maternal side of my ancestry which is presenting a number of difficulties, not least the fact that most of my ancestors were travelling people shown variously as Hawkers, pedlars etc.

They appear to have centred around the Ashford, Faversham, Whitstable area as well as Sussex and the adjoining Kent border.

If anyone can suggest any useful reasearch facilities that may help me dig up some information on travelling people in the county I would be very grateful.

Regards

Steve

Welcome to rootschat!  :)

If you go to the main rootschat menu, you'll see a board for "Travelling people" under the section headed "General". There are tips on there and you'll probably spot some of the names you're looking for there too.

There are also a few experts on here who are also researching travelling families, so they'll be able to give you some good advice. You will probably be best putting a post on the Travelling board too.

If you need help with BMDs and census though, there are plenty of willing volunteers to do lookups.

Good Luck
Catherine  :)

http://www.familysearch.org (select Record Search Pilot) has recently been updated with many Kent baptisms, marriages and burials and has a good search engine too
