MattieMae posted a message on the Dublin, Ireland board for a convent which she has discovered is actually in Australia. Here's a link to convents on that Continent which may help other members http://www.conventsaustralia.com You can search either by the name of the religious order who were in the convent or by state.

The index contains details of headstones from a number of cemeteries in Australia. It initially concentrates on cemeteries in regional NSW, but can expand into other areas as required. There is also photo's available for most of these.

The National Archives of Ireland holds a wide range of records relating to the transportation of convicts from Ireland to Australia covering the period 1788 to 1868. In some cases these include records of members of convicts' families transported as free settlers.
Click here (http://www.nationalarchives.ie/search/index.php?category=18) to use the online Ireland-Australia transportation database
The information on the record should show ....

First name:

Sex:
Age:
Sound name:
Trial place:
Trial date:
Crime desc:

Comment1:
The Taoiseach presented microfilms of the most important of these records, as a gift from the Government and People of Ireland, to the Government and People of Australia to mark the Australian Bicentenary in 1988. A computerised index to the records was prepared with the help of IBM and is available for use at various locations in Australia.

This is a good one to look up after the National Shipwreck Register.

Encyclopedia of Australian Shipwrecks
P.S. thanks so much to tropicalj(jenn) for the link to the National Shipwreck Register. You helped me find a shipwreck my mother had researched unsuccessfully for over 30 years. She had the wrong spelling of the name, I played around with the spelling and found the Taramung in less than 5 minutes.

Hi Everyone,
The National Library of Australia is digitising newspapers from as early as 1803 and no later than 1954, including papers from it seems all over Australia - every page of every issue, and there is a great search engine feature, and all without any fees. (In 2009 the Sydney Morning Herald will be uploaded, wow !, but already the Gazette from 1803 is online, so too papers from Tassie, WA, SA, Vic, Qld, NT, The Canberra Times, and several NSW publications too)

Yes MA.....An excellent resource much used by 'chatters.
Listed previously in September 08.

May I suggest a browse through the resources listed to save duplication.

Hi Cando,
I have gone over the postings on this thread, and had not found the beta version of the newspapers listed on this thread.
Thank you for that link that indiciates where that newspaper link had been listed back in Sept 08, and yes I had browsed that link previously. It was not my intention to cause you concern about duplication, but rather to offer the link for those, like me, who have found the rootschat site only recently, and thus are much less experienced at finding the relevant threads. I am sorry for causing this duplication of the link to the newspaper site.
Cheers, and my apologies, :-[

Hi All,
http://www.library.jcu.edu.au/subjectgds/Fac1/LibGuides/indigfamhist.shtml -For those tracing their Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and South Sea Islander family heritage this site could be very helpful. I am not sure if this link has been posted on other threads, but perhaps it is relevant to place the link here as this thread seems to be for all Australian Resources.
Cheers,
MA

Well why list it again?
If all new people to the site listed every site they found useful there would be utter confusion that is why I suggested you browse ALL the Australian Resources... scroll down the board. You may find something that interests you....you never know.
You can use the Search rootschat at the top of the board if you are looking for something in Australian Resources.

Hi Cando,
I am sorry that you seem to think I am somehow duplicating those listings, and I am somewhat embarassed to admit that I do not quite grasp why putting a link on the main thread headed 'AUSTRALIAN RESOURCES' should cause any adverse comments from anyone, particularly when the link I placed there was not already listed on that specific thread. Not all the people who visit this site are as familiar with this site as you are, but we all were once beginners, needing a helping hand. I believe in sharing and caring, and I am sure you do too. I apologise for any misunderstanding caused by my postings. I thought I was contributing something of value to help others, I am sorry that you may have thought otherwise. I am not used to be scolded, and I do not understand why you would think that my posting warranted your response.
Cheers, please accept my apology.

Perhaps re-read what I wrote...I was not scolding I was making helpful suggestions...I say no more because there will be another long response.
Cando

Ahem!
Genuine mistake - say no more - duplication is more of an issue when requesting info than when supplying it!
Merry Christmas!

This link helps with information about Chinese immigration to Australia, from way before Federation, not just recent arrivals. There is a searchable database.

Hi M A
Please keep adding web links. Not everyone is the perfect searcher and for some reason everytime I try to find a link I can never find it.
To the experts on R C please be patient with the less experienced.
Cheers
