Title: Bunclody, Ireland
Post by: Colin 123 on Thursday 21 June 07 15:08 BST (UK)
My ancestors came from Ballykeenan, Myshall, County Carlow.  However, most of their trading was done in Bunclody, a town which I understand staddles the borders of three Counties, Carlow, Wexford and Wicklow.
When I was looking for Bunclody in the Rootschat directory of names of towns in the various counties, Bunclody was no where to be found.  Which one of these counties should claim this pleasant piece of paradise on the Slaney River .
Also, I would like to know where Rootschat will mention the town of Bunclody. ???

Thanks Jaylay,

Glads someone is claiming it as THEIR city. Hope Rootschat will include it as a town IN WEXFORD COUNTY.

Bunclody is a beautiful place and it means the mouth of the Clodah river. The Clodah and the Slaney river meet here.
 Regards.

Hi Colin,

It's not unusual for towns that straddle a river to "have a foot" in more than one County.

Athlone for example is a major town on the river Shannon so one side is in WestMeath and the other in Roscommon.

On the other hand Waterford City is contained entirely on one bank of the River Suir because the other bank is in Co. Kilkenny and agreement for the expansion of the city across the river has never been made.

I'm sure there are similar examples to be found in Canada.

Hi Ronnie,
Nice photo of your ancestor, cute little smile !  Yes, we have similar situations in Canada but the point I was attempting to make was that when one is doing a lookup for Bunclody on the Rootschat Board,, it is no where to be found, not in Wexford, not in Carlow, and not in Wicklow. Perhaps it could be included in ALL counties ? Maybe its simply not big enough to demand this sort of recognition ?Thought the Board Administrator would pick up on it but I guess not ! Thanks for your response.
No big deal--------just a suggestion .

Bunclody was also known as Newtownbarry up till the early 20th Century.

the list at the top of the board isn't a list of towns ... as far as I know, it's a list of parishes (because lots of records are Civil Parish based)

I think the parish is called St Mary's Newtownbarry which is in the list above (with typos)

Colin hasn't been online since 2007 so probably won't see these later posts.
