Hi All
I am a Hartgroves and have been researching my family on and off for some 30 years! I am new to this site however. I guess that I am not alone in hitting an impasse at the marriage of James to Mary Hasler at High Roding in 1769, but would be more than grateful and thrilled if anyone has progressed with any certainty further back. I am willing to share any information that I have which could be of assistance. Meanwhile I await any responses with some anticipation.
Many Regards

It looks as though James Hartgroves (M) Mary Hasler , they had William who (M) Ann Weall 1807 at Roding Essex. They had John (B) Nov. 1817 (my connection) Issac (B) Jan. 1820 (who is connected to "Mallard 45" What do you think.

Thanks
We obviously connect at William and Ann. However, I am also descended by the direct Male Line from Isaac, of whom I have quite a lot of information and deep respect.
regards.

E-Mail:- ** might be easier?
Isaac B 1820 Joined the army in 1841 and travelled to China then back to India in 1843. He marched with his regiment from Calcutta to the NW frontier. He returned to England in 1855 when he married my GGGM Sarah Ann Bull in Weedon Northants. They returned to India and stayed until 1862 when he was invalided out and became a Chelsea Outpensioner at 1s:6d per week. He rose through the ranks to become Colour Sergeant the highest non commissioned rank, had an exemplory record and received three campiagn medals. There were three children William Henry my GGF, Sarah and Henry these latter two died in India. On discharge they returned to Northampton where Isaac died in 1872.
Mallard 45 must be of the William Henry clan since he was the only surviving child of Isaac. I have copies of Isaac's army paybooks and his discharge papers. My cousin in Northampton has the originals together with his medals.
regards

It seems that rising through the ranks continues as my Grandfather was a C.S.M (T/SSM)in the A.S.C when he received the M.C. London Gazette 1st January 1918. Unfortunately I have no citation for this award. I have been told that this was an award for conspicuous gallantry. My Grandfather was placed in the Duke of Yorks School when he was coming up to ten, and served in the army until 1920.

My Great Grandmother was Annie Hartgrove (not Hartgroves) born Epping/Toot Hill/Stamford Rivers Essex 1861 died Walthamstow 1948. I have her grave certificate. Her father was Dan Hartgrove of Toot Hill Stamford Rivers and there was also an Aunt Emily who may have been her sister also an Uncle Tom who was Dan Hartgrove's son. I have posted elsewhere on this website more details. Annie Hartgrove married a man called Southgate from Ipswich and had three children George Harry Southgate (known as Uncle Harry), Daisy and Rose Alice or Alice Rose my maternal Grandmother. Annie Southgate then married a man called Hobbs after Southgate died in 1891 and they lived off Springfield Road Chelmsford and later George Street off Moulsham Street Chelmsford. They moved to Walthamstow and Annie Hartgrove/Southgate/Hobbs was known as Granny Hobbs and was buried in Queens Road Cemetery Walthmastow in 1948. I have her grave certificate. Annie Hartgrove's son George Harry Southgate had a son Harry Southgate who is still alive as Air Vice Marshall Southgate in Who's Who. George Harry Southgate did some sketches/cartoons in WW1 and they are in the Essex Record Office and the National Army Museum. I did a memoir "Essex Boy Walthamstow and Rainham 1949-1959 available on Walthamstow Memories website and also Essex Record Office, Vestrey Museum Walthamstow. I have photos but this system does not let me post tho it used to!!!! I am trying to retrieve a phot of Annie Hartgrove from relatives in canada and USA!!!!

Pics above are Rose Alice Fryer nee Southgate or Annie Hartgrove's daughter with husband Jack Fryer in the 1960s at Framlingham castle. The other is Air Vice Marshall Harry Southgate CB in the 1970s and he was Annie Hartgrove's Grandson by her son George Harry Southgate. Cousin Harry would stay with Aunty Emily possibly Annie Hartgrove's sister at the cottage in Toot Hill Stamford Rivers.
-
Annie Hartgrove's grave certificate. Ooops. She died 1949 not 1948. Having been Mrs Harry Southgate she married again and died Mrs Hobbs or Granny Hobbs. Also Annie Hartgrove's daughter Rose Alice Southgate or Alice Rose Southgate aged 17 in about 1903. I tried but the system says its the same file name and I can't be bothered now!
-
Annie Hartgrove 1861-1949 died in Walthamstow 1949 one of her daughters Rose Alice or Alice Rose Southgate is shown above with husband Jack Fryer. Also is Air Vice Marshall Harry Southgate Annie Hartgrove's Grandson who is in Who's Who. Annie Hartgrove married Harry Southgate from Ipswich and he was a blacksmith in Epping, Essex. He died in 1891. Annie Hartgrove then married a man called Hobbs and was buried as Annie Hobbs she died April 9th 1949 and was buried in Queen's Road Cemetary Walthamstow.
-
Annie Hartgrove (my Gt Grandmother) was born in Stamford Rivers Essex in 1861. The 1881 Census shows her as Ann Hartgrove born Stamford Rivers 1861 and then working as a domestic servant for Joseph Parkhurst a draper and clothier of High Street, Chipping Ongar Essex. Later Annie Hartgrove married a blacksmith of Epping by the name of (Harry?) Southgate and he came from the corn trading firm of Walter Southgate and Son of Ipswich but turned his back on that. This (Harry) Southgate died in 1891 when my Grandmother Rose Alice Southgate was five. (Ann Hartgrove was her mother)..They also had a Daisy Southgate and then there was George Harry Southgate. Annie Hartgroved died in Walthamstow on 9th April 1949 and is buried in Queen's Road Cemetery Walthamstow

I have been reading your family history re Hartgrove, but I am interested to know have you gone back on the family history?
-
No. I have merely followed up that which was taught to me by my Grandmother Rose Alice Southgate born Epping 1886. Her mother was the former Annie Hartgrove. Her, Annie's father, was Daniel Hartgrove. His son was Thomas William Hartgrove (Uncle Tom) of Stanford Rivers and he worked as a horseman on a local farm. Dan Hartgrove is alive in the 1911 census. Emily I think might also have been Dan's daughter and certainly lived in Dan's cottage as did Tom until he died in or after WW1. Emily was living in the cottage in the 1930s for sure and I think died in 1948/9 and I feel is buried as Emily Fish in Stamford River church on te left as you go in the main gate. I have put what I know and some pics on this Hartgrove-Harknett website but there is more I have put elsewhere on Hartgroveon this website but I canot find it!....I have also linked the Hartgrove line with the Fryer line of Hempnall Norfolk but as regards Hartgrove unless you can find what I have put down elsewhere on them in RootsChat then that is it. I am struggling to repatriate a photo of Annie Hartgrove from USA! The Hartgrove cottage is diagonally to the right from the Green Man pub in Toot Hill Stamford Rivers. On the far corner of the green there is a thuck hedge and some Essex timber cottages. Dan Hartgrove's is the one on the end (left) and has a small "L" shaped garden. I will try and add a photo if the system lets me! (known as Uncle Tom's Cabin!)
-
I will try and add a pic of Annie Hartgrove's son George Harry Southgate taken I think in the 1950s at 1 Jessie Cottages Low Hall Lane Walthamstow
-
I will now try and put up a pic of Rose Alice Southgate whose mother was the former Annie Hartgrove born Stamford Rivers Essex 1861. Rose was my Nana Fryer. The pic shows her aged about 17 in 1901 or so. Annie Hartgrove and Rose are very similar so if you see my Nana Fryer you see the former Annie Hartgrove. I shall now put up pic of Annie Hartgrove (later Mrs Southgate and at the end Annie Hobs) 1861-1949..
I shall now put up pic of Annie Hartgrove (Mrs Southgate then finally Mrs (Granny) Hobbs when she married Ernie Hobbs probably in Chelmsford Essex some time after 1891 when her first husband died and he had been a blacksmith in Epping.
-
Wedding group photo shows Annie Hartgrove born Stanford Rivers Toot Hill Essex 1861 later Annie Southgate later Annie Hobbs at the wedding of her Grandaughter some time in the 1940s. Annie Hobbs (nee Hartgrove) is second from right all in black. On her right is her daughter Daisy Bell but born Daisy Southgate in Epping Essex. "Granny Hobbs" (nee Annie Hartgrove) is Daisy's mother and my maternal Great Grandmother. The 1861 census shows Ann Hartgrove born Stanford Rivers 1861 as being a domestic servant in the house of Joseph Parkhurst draper and clothier of High Street Chipping Ongar Essex. Also shown is Daisy Bell (nee Daisy Southgate in WW2 volunteers uniform)

Sorry that should be 1881 Census!!!!
