Does anyone know anything about a musician Samuel Round born Wales or Staffs in abt 1866 and died 1898 Portsea/Portsmouth. He was married to Beatrice who appears as a widow in 1901.
Apparently his was a composer of music for the organ but every page that seems to be about him on google etc is "dead".
Is there anyone that knows anything about him?
Thanks
Jess

He does not appear in Scholes "Music and Musicians" or Groves Dictionary of Music for that time so I wonder if he was light music/music hall rather than classical. Just a thought. Have you tried the big National Biographical dictionary? They should have one at your local library - or at least know where there is one. Finding his marriage would help as you would then know his father's name and be able to confirm whether it is him in 1881 born Tipton or not. Just in case you don't know all BMDs are free to search on www.ancestry.co.uk Scroll down on the home page and click the link

Andrea - yes thanks I'm going to the library today so hopefully will find something. On the pages that have closed down on google it would appear it might be church organ music but I'll have to investigate more.
Beth- Yes thanks email received and I have replied
Thanks to you both

Samuel Round was my great grandfather. His son (Samuel Haydn Stanley) was my mother's father. I have just started doing some digging into my family tree and came across your posting from a few years ago.
My brother has some sheet music of Samuel's and from what we know he was an organist and composer of church music.
Do you have the obituary notice that someone mentioned? I would love to see it.

I have found a newspaper report of the funeral service attended by Samuel's father and two sons at Highland Road Cemetery on Saturday 18th September, 1898 which I can either publish here or send to you as a PM.
He played the organ at St. Thomas's Church for several years apparently.

FUNERAL of Mr. S. ROUND
The interment of the remains of the late Mr. Samuel Round, of 39, Victoria-road South, took place at the Highland Road Cemetery on Saturday. The deceased who was organist at St. Thomas’s Church for several years, was very popular, and a large crowd of sympathising friends gathered at the graveside. At the cemetery gates the remains, which were enclosed in a polished elm coffin with brass furniture, were met by the choir in surplices, who led the cortege to the church where the funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Canon E. P. Grant, Vicar of Portsmouth. Mr. Green, one of the deceased’s pupils presiding at the organ. The chief mourners were the deceased’s father and brother and two sons. Other followers included several local organists and a number of Mr. Round’s pupils. There were many floral wreaths. One was sent by members of St. Thomas’s Choir and another by the Vicar. At the conclusion of the service the choir, standing by the graveside, sung “Peace, Perfect Peace”. The funeral arrangements were conducted by Messrs. Russel and Co, Albert Road, Southsea.
There are a number of other reports, earlier when he played at various services-St Thomas's was the church that the Portsmouth Corporation worshipped at in the 1890's, the references, and they are hard to find seem to start around 1890. Have sent you a PM so you can have a try yourself!

Hello,
I am new to the site, after having joined when an article caught my attention.
The article on here relates to a Mr Samuel Round, organist in Portsea but originally from the West Midlands. One of the members commenting is a Cheryl Lane who says that Samuel was her great grandfather. I have tried to respond on the thread but I don't appear able to. I too am a great grand daughter through his youngest son, my grandad, Frank Swinchatt Round, who was only 3 months old when his father, Samuel, died.
I am hoping that Cheryl will get to see this message.
