Title: George STOWER - Marriage Record
Post by: Pilgrims Progress on Monday 18 June 07 13:43 BST (UK)
Hi From Down Under,

Would any kind person know any of the details of George Stower and who he married at Chard, Somersetshire in 1854.

Many thanks for any assistance,

Pilgrims Progress  :)  :)  :)

Hi

Marriage Registration

The four “contenders”......

1854 Chard AMJ quarter 5c 868

Elizabeth Daniel
Martha Frost
Joseph Light
George Stower

The only certain way to find out which bride married George would be to see the marriage certificate or the register.

However by looking at the 1861 census it is possible to guess think aloud. ;D

There is an entry for a Joseph Light married to a Martha both from Crewkerne (which is covered by the Chard Registration District). I cannot see a Joseph Light married to an Elizabeth.

There is also this entry

1861

Taunton, Bishops Lydeard RG9/1620 Folio 120 Page 17

George Stower Head M 29 Railway Lab Somerset Crewkerne
Elizabeth do Wife M 29 Somerset Crewkerne
Thomas do Son 8 Scholar Somerset Crewkerne

Stockham, West Bagborough, Somerset

There is no birth registration in 1852/3 for a Thomas Stower in Chard but there is this birth registration....

1852 Chard JAS quarter 5c 471

Thomas Daniel

As I said at the outset, sight of the marriage certificate or the register entry is necessary to be absolutely sure but there is a lot of unproven and circumstantial evidence, as above, which might lead someone to think that he married Elizabeth Daniel.

On the 1841 census he seems to be the son of a James and Mary Stower.

What do you think ?

Wow DS,

Is that you helping me in both Somersetshire and Staffordshire - how lucky am I ?

Due to inexperience....... I have since been able to find the correct marriage for George Stower - in 1855 at Wells to Eliza Burge.

Where I believe you have helped me enormously is to have turned up the 1841 Census record for George Stower
living with parents James and Mary Stower. Fantastic !!

When George died Geelong, Victoria, Australia 1905 his father's name was stated James Stower- mother unknown with the word written after - "Charl"and that George had been b Somerset c" 1835. I'd be delighted if you could help me with the census record you have located.

Hope you don't think I'm too greedy ( I know I am), but would you have a census record for Eliza Burge b c:1834 Her death certificate indicated she was born Somerset to William Burge and Maria Arnold.

Have my fingers and toes firmly crossed,

Many, many thanks,

Pilgrims Progress    :)  ;) :D  ;D

Hi

Here it is, but I think that this one might have married Elizabeth. I have not yet found a George and Eliza on the 1861 census. Do you know when they emigrated ?

Hi DS,

Yes it does seem to be the same family. Unusual spelling of surname but well found - it has to be them - except poor Jane the lunatic was listed as Ann ten years previously. Helpful to see place of birth too for each of them. I've had a quick look on the Free BMD site for possible deaths of James and Charlotte and the ages on those likely are more in keeping with their ages listed on the 1851 census.

Well done as usual super sleuth,

Many....a thousand thanks!

Mary do Wife M 63 Lydford Somerset

Confirms that George is no longer with his parents. I think the wife is the same person using another name. Cannot find George and Eliza though in 1861. :(

DS

ps Is Pilgrim by any chance your real surname ? My uncle was called Henry Pilgrim.

At RG10/2393 Folio 29 Page 8 a Jane Stower aged 53 from Charlton Adam is living with a George James and his wife Mary (aged 42 from Charlton Mackrell) and family. She is described as Sister in Law. You may be able to find these people yourself in 1881.

Hello again

The deaths for James and Charlotte will be the two registered in Langport between 1871 and 1881, I would think.

I bet you had already decided that ?

I cannot see any obvious sign of brother Joseph after the 1851 census. Is it possible that he (and George & Eliza) emigrated before 1861 ?

However, here is something else about the Burge family

1851

Wells Glastonbury HO107/1935 Folio 104 Page 8

Eliza Burge aged 16 and unmarried from Baltonsborough is a House Servant in the household of Henry Hawkins at Molton (?) Street, Butleigh.

Wells Glastonbury HO107/1935 Folio 59 Pages 6/7

William Burge Head M 51 A Labourer Somt Baltonsborough
Ann do Daur U 20 ? Binder Somt Baltonsborough
James do Son U 21 A Labourer Somt Baltonsborough
George do Son U 19 A Labourer Somt Baltonsborough
Mary Ann do Gd Daur 16 Scholar Somt Baltonsborough
Jane do Gd Daur 4 Somt Baltonsborough
Augustus (?) do (?) 9mo Somt Baltonsborough
Philip Arnold Lodger Wid 84 A Labourer Somt Lovington

Not sure where wife, Maria, is but the Lodger looks interesting :o

Mary Ann & Jane were definitely shown as Gd Daughters in 1851 and they are definitely shown as Daughters in 1861.

I don’t think that William and Maria made it to the next census (Two deaths registered in Wells in the interim).

I hope that the information above has been helpful to you. When you have sorted it all out, you may wish to start new threads for any particular queries, arising from it, which you would like to pursue.

All the best

I thought that you might also like this. There is a chance that these might be Maria’s parents (but it is only a possibility until it is proven by some other means). If only the 1851 census had said something other than “Lodger” for Phillip :-\

I think Jane died a few months later.

Hi DS,

Wow! I can't believe my good fortune having you on board to help so much. It is very much appreciated. My head is spinning trying to grasp the possibilities so I've decided to absorb the help you have given me so far - fill some charts out and ponder which direction to go next.

I was delighted to find the Parish Transcript of Charlton Mackrell on line which enabled me to find the baptisms of each of James and Charlotte Stowers children. Sadly no marriage record of the above couple. :(  Do you think Charlotte's maiden name will be listed on her death certificate?

Once again many thanks for your help and generosity. One week ago I had no idea where George and Eliza Stower came from and now all this......

Regards

Pilgrims Progress

Hi PP

Unfortunately the maiden name is not found on English death certificates. Scottish records are far superior in terms of what information they contain.

Here is a link to a site that shows briefly what is contained on each type of certificate in England and Wales and also shows the additional information found on a Scottish certificate.....

http://www.familyrecords.gov.uk/topics/bmd_2.htm

This is also a very good site on the same subject.....

Hope that helps

All the best

Can you assist me? You will find Eliza Burge who married George Stower on my website www.butleigh.org - I would welcome details of when they emigrated and what happened next to amplify what I have on my website.
