G'day!
So I finally have a birthdate of my Great Grandfather, now how do I obtain a copy of his Birth Certificate, so I can find his parents details..??
Probably a really dull question with an easy answer..!
Oh yeah, it is 4 April 1874, but he doesn't seem to appear on the census' for some reason. Born at 'St John's, Salford, Lancashire' to John Thomas & Frances Ball
Any help would be great... am kinda new to this stuff!
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave,
I haven't checked the birth but I do see him on census (or at least I think so):
Can you follow this link?

Thanks Tati,
The siblings I have for him are 'Ethel' & 'Frances' and a couple of unknowns. That is not to say they came after the census was taken.
Are there any more possibles...?? I know the birthday is correct due to it being in JT's wife's diary in the war years, and the year comes from his Army papers. That is the stuff I know for sure, the rest is a bit sketchy!

Hi Dave
Not sure if its the right one but there is a birth on
www.lancashirebmd.org
1872 John Thomas Ball - Salford Greengate
Cert No. GRE/107/31
Alison.
-
Agree with Alison - there's only one John Thomas Ball registered in Salford Lancashire, both on FreeBMD and LancashireBMD
GRO reference is
June quarter 1872 (right quarter for an April birth)
Salford 8d 62
Will try to find above family on other census...

Seems John Thomas (now Thomas) is remarried to a Mary A in 1891, with children age 5 and less, none of which are called Frances or Ethel :P By 1901, he's in Wales...
Can't see little John in 1891 so far ...
-
Hmmm,
I think there is an error on the Attestation paper. His death certificate is attached, which would put the date as 4 April 1871? Would this make the birth certificate you have found correct..??
-
OK so maybe I will attach it this time..!!
-
And the Death Cert.
-
We need it to be 1872 :P
-
18 years & 2 months in July 1890 = April/May 1872 8)
-
Best match I can see for a marriage between John Thomas & Fanny (from LancashireBMD):
1871 - Manchester St John
John Thomas Ball - Fanny R Powell
Fanny Rebecca Ball
Death age 36
Dec quarter 1886
Manchester 8d 178
-
18 years & 2 months in July 1890 = April/May 1872 8)
Do you make it 1890 from his attestation paper..?? I make it an 1892, and I have independent information from the Manchester Regiment Museum saying 1892 also..., rather vexing!
Shame.., 1890 would make it much more convenient!
Dave
-
Blimey - if everybody else sees it as 1892 then I suppose it is :P
-
Is there any way it could be verified?? Assuming the birth register is the right one, is there any other way to confirm it..? Maybe on a wedding certificate?
Dave
-
Wedding certs don't give birth dates, only ages, and they're not necessarily correct :-\ But then the witnesses might hold a clue ...
Do you know who and when he married? :)
-
Mary Elizabeth Hopkinson on 27/12/1902, shortly after he returned from South Africa (Boer War)
The details are again noted in his Army file which I have attached.
Witnesses are: Emma Hopkinson & Richard Sauer? Sauce? ;)
It was at St Simons, Salford (a common theme) and the Minister is listed also if it helps any.

Is there a way to find out the school he attended.. possibly in Salford? This may be a way of confirming his siblings, although having no idea about the place there are probably a few schools in the area!
