Title: Toll Gate, Capel.
Post by: pauly on Saturday 16 June 07 20:29 BST (UK)
Hi Guys & Gals.

Need a bit more help on finding ancestors living places please.

I've an ancestor living in the Toll Gate, Capel, Surrey. Does anyone know if there is any remains of this to be seen, or where it would have been?

Thank you in advance

Pauly

Hi
Have you found your ancestor living there in a census?   If so, you can look at the neighbouring addresses or follow the enumerator's route and see where it was.  Some do still exist so you might be lucky.

Hi Andrea.

Thank you for the hint.

I'm still working my way through the census results nearby, but it must be quite rural there in this time as I haven't found a road name close by, just farms & house names!

I'll keep trying though.

Thanks again

Pauly,
Which census are you refering to?  I'm asking as in a couple of weeks I'm meeting-up with a historian who's an expert in all things Capel so I could ask her,

Hi Jane & thanks for your reply.

It is from the 1861 census for Henry Sayers b1821, Ockley. He was living with his family in Toll Gate, being the Toll Keeper at this time. RG 9/439 page 1.

I'm not sure how long he held this post for as he was an Ag Lab in 1851 & in Wandsworth prison in 1871!

The Sayers side of my family were all from the Ewhurst/Ockley/Capel area as far back as the early 1500's, being land owners further back, so I would think they would be well known in early times.

Any info you could get would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

OK Pauly,
I've printed out that information so if you can be patient (we're meeting on June 29) I'll see what I can get from her  ;)

Hi Jane

No problem with the wait. Its taken me 146 years to get round to finding out, so another couple of weeks will be a cinch  ;)

Thank you very much for your kind offer.

;D Welcome.  In the meantime have you tried 'Old Maps' (just Google) ? You might find it marked on that.

Hi Pauly,
I met with Mary, the Capel expert & she took a copy of the print out of your request & said she would get in touch when she's looked into it.  Although she mentioned that there wasn't a toll gate IN Capel as such, so we'll have to wait to see what she says  :)

Hi Jane.

Thank you ever so much for asking for me. I have had no joy as yet myself, so anything that is found out will be a lovely bonus.  :D

Thank you once again.

Pauly, this is the reply, I hope it helps.

As I suggested 'Tollgate' was on the road between Holmwood and Beare Green at what was known as 'Holmwood Corner'.  The toll house no longer stands but some adjacent cottages survive.  The OS Grid reference is approximately 174 443.  Sayers is a well represented name in Capel records.

My Tickner ancestors lived in Toole Gate  ( Toll gate) Holmwood as it was known in the 1850s.  I also have Sayers on my tree.   Shirley
