Title: RootsChat 'Dublin Meet'
Post by: Celtic Damsel on Thursday 14 June 07 12:24 BST (UK)
Hi all you lovely Rootschatters, I was just chatting to Christopher about the meet and thought it would be great if he had an idea of exactly how many people are definitly travelling to Dublin for it, and have booked already etc, it would make organising a venue for the Friday night easier if he has definite numbers, so would you all be so kind as to add your name here only as a reply to this post as the topic seems to be scattered around the boards and its giving me a headache trying to figure it all out  dont know about anyone else giggles !!  if your a definite let him now so we can get organising, look forward to meeting you all, Celtic Damsel  ;D

Thanks for your post Celtic Damsel,

All new members living in Ireland who did not post on the threads about the Dublin Meet aren't too late to join those attending. If you live anywhere near Dublin please do your best to attend.

Here's another thread about the  Dublin Meet  (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=148893.msg1045181#msg1045181)

Many thanks.

RootChat Dublin Meeting Friday 22nd to Sunday 24th June 2007
Title: Re: DUBLIN MEET
Post by: Christopher on Friday 15 June 07 21:23 BST (UK)
So many members have posted me apologetic emails regretting that they'll be  unable to attend the Dublin event this year I feel that it might be an idea to cancel this year's meet and have it another time. How many members are interested in meeting in Dublin?

Title: Re: DUBLIN MEET
Post by: bodger on Friday 15 June 07 22:08 BST (UK)
I'm still on for it, but as i said earlier, , i have no interest in Irish genealogy from a personal point, ie, I'm Yorks/Derbys. stock, but living here i would love to meet people with similar interest, Bodger
PS. i would not require accommodation, all i want is a good night out and a bit of craic
Title: Re: DUBLIN MEET
Post by: Christopher on Friday 15 June 07 22:18 BST (UK)
Hiya bodger,

That's four of us  then. Any more for the Skylark ??? Celtic Damsel  and her sister taid are still interested.
Mo posted a message  on 7th April re a destination for Friday.  (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,148804.75.html) It's a bit link a mystery tour as she omitted
to name the place :D I'll send a few more emails to the members still on the list to see how many more
are interested.

I have said that there will be around 40 so I hope all turn up here in Dublin....

I have booked it for 8 o'clock I hope thats ok with you all

Post by: moscan on Wednesday 20 June 07 17:13 BST (UK)
Ouch... they will not be happy lol... oh well never mind..

I hope that more will turn up when they really see that its going ahead... with only that number its not really worth while having a room... what do others think?

I had to pay for room, ( not that I mind... )  But if only that number confirmed coming its really not practical...  What do you think Christopher

Best wishes

Mo and Christopher,

Looking forward to being there.

If everybody is as friendly in "real life" as they are on Rootschat, then it should be a lovely evening.

RonnieG
Title: Re: DUBLIN MEET
Post by: Christopher on Wednesday 20 June 07 17:21 BST (UK)
Ah no, Mo!

I didn't realise you had to pay for the room.

I don't know if RootsChat would have allowed us to ask for a small non returnable deposit. Large numbers showing an interest can make life difficult. It's just as well I did not go ahead with plans for a couple of speakers.

We may not be beaten yet. There are about twelve on another site ... I've posted details to them.

Christopher.

If those from here on Rootschat could let us know for certain like Ronnie did that they were coming it would be helpful

Well guys now tha its friday again me and Taid are in, but as you said unless you know there's at least a minumum of 30 it would not be worthwhile paying for a room, if there is a good number I'm sure none of us would mind paying 5 or 10 euro each or whatever , I dont know what the room cost so dont know if that would cover the cost, Damsel

Hello,

There's been a change of plan.

Meet at 7.30pm and 8pm in the Davenport Hotel.
Celtic Damsel suggests we all print out the Rootschat Logo and stick iton a lapel so we have no problems recognising each other.

Christopher,

If you just stand in the middle of the room it will be grand. Everyone knows what you used to look like before they sold "The Rotterdam Bar"!

Celtic Damsel can wear her exotic mask.

I look very like my gr.gr.gr.............grandad (see my avatar)

Should I make a large banner showing the Rotterdam Bar, Ronnie ???
BTW would Bertie sign the petition ??? His name carries some weight :D
Title: Re: DUBLIN MEET

Just leave the petition blank and he should sign it - no problem.

Well Ronnie we will have no prolem spotting you so I assume it's a very good likeness ??  ;) as for my mask I'm reserving it for the carnival in Venice again so you will just have to put up with the real thing instead of the disguise ! ;D

Anymore attendees wishing to give a description of themselves?

It's strange how unlike their avatars everyone looked :D The craic was mighty and following a bit of mooting we decided it might be an idea to have a much larger meet in Dublin in September 2008 with Thursday and Friday being for research, with possibly tours to archives and cemeteries accompanied by an Irish member, and a social evening on the Saturday.

Who wants to look like a derelict pub?!

A very enjoyable evening. I hope I didn't cramp Christopher's style. I think he would have been quite happy to be the only man there surrounded by all those beautiful girls!

Roll on next year.

RonnieG

P.S. looking forward to seeing the new "Mo" online soon.

It was like being surrounded by contestants for the Rose of Tralee Contest. Everyone a winner ... wouldn't you say so . Ronnie ???

Employees of Kildare, or is it Athy, Council had better brush up on foreign languages as Celtic Diamond claims she doesn't speak English.  :D

maybe she's decided she did'nt like us !! giggles well we were thinking and it seems mad to leave it so long and then september is just after hols and just before Christmas really so peole might balk at the time, what about february. itsnot near any holidays so might be a great month for it ?
Title: Re: DUBLIN MEET
Post by: Christopher on Friday 29 June 07 18:49 BST (UK)
Should we time it to coincide with a Rubgy International ???

If there are only the six of us we could save you travelling too far and meet in Athy, Damsel :D

I received a message from a friend as I asked her about a song about Dublin which included the line "Where the strawberry beds sweep down to the Liffey" She told me it's in a song called The Ferryman by a guy born in Dublin, who is now a prolific songwriter, Pete St John. The Dublin City Ramblers sing several of Pete's songs ...  There's a lovely, one on YouTube, called  "Dublin In My Tears"  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Yd7qoY5tRA&mode=related&search=) which has some lovely old Dublin photographs.

http://sniff.numachi.com/pages/tiFERRYMAN.html thats a link to the lyrics of that song, have heard it but not into ballads or rebel songs so cant say much more about it really, dont know a whole heck about Rugby either but asked hubby who informs me thats when the matches for the start 6 nations or something start so why not? that way you catch any rootschat rugby fans here as well, but I do think February would be a good month, ask and see what other people think, we can see about that hall then and start a bit of planning for a good evening few speakers bit of music etc, beginning or end of february would be good as I will probably be away celebrating "reaching a certain age"  for the middle bit of Feb, Damsel

Damsel,
We didn't say anything to upset Moscan did we ??? I don't think we did as she gave me a lovely hug before she left. Did you get one too? She was online yesterday but hasn't posted any messages since her last one on this thread. You don't seriously think she didn't like us do you?

These are the dates of Ireland's home games in February.

Saturday 2nd February  2.00pm: Ireland v Italy
Saturday 23rd February 5.00pm: Ireland v Scotland

I think if Ireland's name comes first that means a home game but perhaps you'd check that with your hubby.

As far as I'm aware the February dates are merely suggestions. Hopefully other members will notice the posts and make their suggestions. It would be great to see more members attending a Meet in Dublin.

Hi taid,

They've removed the gates and searching people.

I've been given the addresses of a couple of Dublin pubs by musicians who have played there recently if that's of any assistance. The hotel where we last met was handy ... close to a station and Dublin City Library and Archives.

The horse is not drawing a coal cart and is good over the jumps. The trainer's Da was responsible for training one of the nation's favourite Grand National winners who won several times.

Pick a date when you are over in May and let us see if we can have a few members meet you when you are in the Fair City where the girls are so pretty. I'm willing to travel to Dublin once a month if there are likely to be other RootsChatters around.

Greetings all.

I would be on god willing for the 5th of April and any other day that suits anyone that can't meet up on that Saturday.

I am sorry that I have been absent recently but my back and family committments have kept me away from the computer.

I am escaping to the sun from 17th March to the 1st April but will be recovered I hope from my little bit of jet lag by the 5th.

Will pop in here now and again for updates and will check my mail while away.

Talk soon I hope

Hi Anne,
Is here not a nice pub where we can have a pub lunch and a drink of course. :)
At meets here we ring a nice pub up and ask if it is ok for what ever number
of people to have a meet and lunch, and we are made very welcome, so if the
numbers go down then no fee is expected, but I have no worries if we have to pay a fee. they would be making just as much as if we were ordinary customers.
it's just a thought.

Margaret.

The Church which was formerly St Mary's Church in Mary Street is a good spot.

These sound tasty ... Beef in Guinness, Irish Oak Smoked Salmon, Smoked Duck Salad, Clonakilty Black Pudding, Vine salad and Seafood Chowder.

O'Neills of Suffolk Street offer a wide range of sandwiches, salads and snacks.

You can see the Poddle flowing under the glass floor at the Ba Mizu

Davy Byrnes has an excellent reputation for pub grub.

Hi Mags,

The Poddle is one of Dublin's rivers.

The others are the Dodder, the Liffey and the Tolka.

Just looking at suggested venues... I am no good as do not venture much into the city in the evening or even by day.  Is this to be a daytime meet or evening?  If daytime I would remark that Mary Street and Suffolk Street are on/near very busy Saturday shopping areas and could be crowded.  If Mary Street is regular restaurant then could just book a couple of tables to solve that problem.

Back to numbers again.  Any idea?

As a backup/supplementary place I would mention the cafe attached to Pearse Street library, open from 10 to 5 pm and usually very quiet.  They do good soup/sandwiches/coffee etc.   But I cannot think of anywhere within walking distance of there for better food though quite a few hotels with decent lounge areas such as Davonport, Mont Clare and Alexander.  Also Holiday Inn on Pearse Street.  Hotels might suit for general gathering before heading to restaurant/pub.  Too many pricey places to eat in city!

April 5th is br in law's 60th birthday so I may not be free to come in evening :(

Anne

Saturday afternoon meet in Pearse Street Library sounds like a very good idea.......although we may have to have a short adjournment for Christopher to watch his horse winning the Grand National.

Is this to be a purely social event like last time?

Fellow Dublin meeters,

In the absence of any definite alternative, I will be in Pearse Street library on Saturday April 5th.

As I already have a "reader's ticket" I'm hoping to do a bit of research that morning and adjourn to the cafeteria at about 1.00pm

Will anybody else be there or should I bring a book?

Christopher,
We arrive in Dublin on Saturday afternoon 17th May coming from England and being well over the jet lag after being there for a week. We leave Dublin for Kilmallock on the folllowing Wednesday. We need to go to NLI, The National Archives, Government Records Office and the Registry of Deeds. We only have one inquiry in the GRO and the Registry of Deeds so will need to spend most of our time in the National Archives and the Library.

I had a wonderful  time even so, and have gathered so much info I will be on here for hours. and it was lovely to meet my second cousins which we will never lose touch with now.
Once again, hanks for putting your selfs out to come to the Library and I had a lovely time,  it is so nice to put a face to a name now.
