I am searching for the married names for Lillian ( Lily) De Curtoni and Elizabeth De Curtoni. Lily arrived in San Francisco in 1902 and Elizabeth in 1906 as young women from New Zealand. They were both still single in mid 1906. Being creative with spelling and place of birth on Ancestry's US Census records has failed to find them. Neither have the on-line Californian Birth and Death Indexes where maiden names are included.
I am only presuming that they married in the San Francisco area where they had family. Is there some way of searching marriage indexes in California on-line or do I need a Look Up?
This is my very first posting so I hope I have done everthing correctly. Can you tell how nervous I am ?

Hi Rose,
I saw you in the chat room and I think you are doing GREAT!!!!!
Don't be nervous.
I live in California...but am hopeless at California genealgy...heheh..I was born in England.
However, you might try poking about on the California GenWeb:

Thank you Indiapaleale and Ohio Susan for your replies.
I am amazed at the response time to my query. The slowest part is with me trying to figure out how to reply.
Indiapaleale,
I will check out the suggested website. Yes, I did peep in the chat room but it was all too much for a learner like me.
Ohio Susan,
The South Carolina Death Index Lily you found seems likely to be the NZ Lily DeCurtoni even though the birth year of 1873 is a little out. NZ Lily was born around 1878.
It puzzles me as to why I have been unable to locate her ( or sister Elizabeth ) under De Curtoni or variants in the three US Census of 1910, 1920 and 1930. Their brothers' and uncle's families were all found in the San Francisco area. I therefore decided that Lily and Elizabeth were married by the 1910 Census.
Could Lily have married but upon her death been registered under her maiden name?
Are there any other explanations for Lily being missing from three census other than her using a married name? There is no record of her ever returning to New Zealand.

Were they born in New Zealand?
When was Elizabeth born?

Both sisters were born in New Zealand and were orphaned when very young. They were brought up in an orphanage. Elizabeth was born in July 1885. The young women travelled to join their NZ born brothers who were already in San Francisco.

You may already have these

Elizabeth is not mentioned - so she might have died young

Thank you, Ohio Susan.
The Frank killed in the Bennington disaster was Lily and Elizabeth's brother. The omission of Elizabeth's name was probably because she was still living in NZ at the time of brother Frank's death. (Two other married sisters who remained all their lives in NZ were not mentioned either.)
The Frank John in the marriage notice was a cousin.
The Ed (Edwin) announcing the birth of his daughter was their youngest brother.
Following my original posting of 13 June 07, I sent for the death certificate of Lillian in South Carolina. The information it held was insufficient to determine whether or not it was my Lillian. Further interesting information has come to light recently regarding this Lillian and I am still waiting for confirmation from Rock Hill that she is NZ Lillian. The waiting is hard. (See the thread, Was the Rockhill benefactor........ )
Some time between 1906 and 1915 Elizabeth became known as Josephine.(For a further thread about Elizabeth/Josephine see, Federal census and single nurses)
I now am beginning to believe that both sisters entered some sort of Catholic institution for some years and took religious names, hence neither being found in the 1910,1920 or 1930 census. It appears also that neither sister married.
It seems that some time after the 1930 census Lillian must have reverted to her birth surname, likewise Josephine(Elizabeth) from the late 1940's.
These sisters are taking me on an interesting journey and I have know idea of what I will eventually find.
Regards,
KiwiRose.
