Title: Houghton Ainsworth-death?
Post by: kooky on Monday 11 June 07 13:47 BST (UK)
Have a marriage for HOUGHTON AINSWORTH and ELLEN NUTTALL in 1835 at Blackburn St. Mary's.
On Ellen's death cert. in 1901 she is shown as widow of Houghton Ainsworth, Cotton Manufacturer.
Ellen and Houghton had 2 sons, Robert and James Hargreaves [chr. Hargreaves 1837]
Have Ellen a widow in 1871,81 and 91 censuses in Accrington.
Cannot find Houghton in any census. Cannot find his death. Cannot find Houghton, Ellen or sons in 1851 census.
Can anybody help? :(

1841 census Manchester, Harg Street

Ellen Ainsworth 24 Sails?? Maker Y
James  Do          3                          Y
Robert Do           5                          Y
Nancy  Do          20                        Y

Nancy may be Houghtons sister having the same surname, maybe he died before Sept 1837 when registration was commenced?

Thank you madpants. I had got Ellen, boys and mysterious Nancy in 1841 at Haig St. I read her occupation on the image as dressmaker. It is in the 1851 census I cannot find them :-[

I have James m. to Elizabeth [Richardson] and son William in 1861 at 101, Waterloo St. Crumpsall.

I think I have found at least 4 Houghton Ainsworths

They are all descended from James Ainsworth (b. 1757) who married Sarah Houghton.  They had 7 sons, the 7th was called Houghton (b.1790).

Their 5th son William called his son Houghton (b 1910) , but just to confuse matters, Williams other son (also called William) called his son Houghton (b. circa 1843)

I am gg granddaughter of the first Houghton and at first thought there was only one. I have found chasing Houghtons fasinating so if you have any more info I would love to hear it
