Title: OLD families of Dorset
Post by: GenJohn on Monday 11 June 07 00:22 BST (UK)
Can anybody help me

I know of several Old Lines in Dorset. My line seems to end in kimmeridge in 1794 when John & Mary Old had George 1798 Charles and two other children at Church Knowle.
I know a family Bible exists showing the lines that went to cornwall but have no idea who has the bible my grandads father died before my grandad could look at the bible as you had to be 16. Would love to find the bible.

Moderator Comment: 'Old' in title changed to 'OLD' to avoid confusion :)

Hi John,

Welcome to Rootschat!

Guess that you have looked on the Family Bibles board on here. Have you tried e-bay. A number come up on there.Sadly though unless they stay in the family, it is sheer luck to find one.

Apart from your Old family, what other lines have you? I would suggest you add the names to your profile as it helps people to link with you.

My great grandmother who was born in Halstead, Dorset  in 1853 was christened Annie OLD Wills. OLD has to be a family name from a previous generation but I have never discovered any link. If one inserts on a map of Dorset any parish that christened an OLD ( as seen on Latter Day Saints CDs Edn.2 )
the oldest  [ 1650 - 1750 ] are found inside a polygon bounded by Yetminster, Sydling St. Nicholas, Dorchester, Dewlish, Hermitage, Yetminster. It hasn't helped me but I still feel that the answer is somewhere within that area. Perhaps it might help you.

Thanks Toby,

All my lot come from the Bridport area and so far no Olds, but will check with other contacts on GR as so many of these families are interlinked.

Thank You Toby
My Old Family never stayed in the same place for long as they were shepherds thats probably why they are so hard to find.

Hi there GenJohn,

I don't suppose your OLDs are connected to a William OLD who was married at Tyneham on 11 Mar 1872 to a Jemima MILLER (1832-1874)? I ask because you mentioned that your OLDs were shepherds, and so was William! I don't know anything about him but Jemima was sister to my 3x great grandfather Joseph MILLER.

Warmest regards and happy OLD hunting!
Layla

My 4x great grandfather was John OLD, who according to the 1861 census was born in Kimmeridge in approx 1789. He was a shepherd, living in Winterbourne Whitchurch from at least 1841 to his death in 1866.

The only John Old baptism I can find in 1789 was in Whitchurch Canonicorum which is 40-odd miles from Kimmeridge, and seems unlikely, so I would love to find a link to any other OLDs.

Hi Im am doing my friends family tree & I think we might have the same person John Old born 1789 Shepherd born Kimmeridge & I also cant find a birth for him or his marriage to Hannah. My friend comes form his daughters line Sophia Old.

Have you found a marriage for John at all.

I have two marriages which I think are both for John, 1st to Grace Brinson in 1813 at Blandford, they had 5 children. Grace died in 1825 and John married again to Hannah Old in Melcome Regis in 1826. It is possible that Hannah's maiden surname was Bartlett. They had 4 children including Sophia who is my 3x great grandmother.
I'd be interested to know how your friend and I are related. I have done a DNA test which is registered on Ancestry and MyHeritage, if they are on there too. Feel free to send me a direct message if you want to talk details.
