Hi Eryka
I am wondering what information you are looking for -
There are resource links in the Qld genealogy post at the top of this board.
A number of Garbutt birth death and marriage records on
http://www.justice.qld.gov.au/bdm/IndexSearch.htm
Records only go to 1914 but the website did have a notice that they are intending to extend the date to 1929 - from memory :-[

Hi Eryka
If it's information regarding Births, Deaths and Marriages that you need, then you can search the Queensland BDM Index online these days. You can find it here :-
www.justice.qld.gov.au
You will find the link to the BDM at the top of the page. When that page loads, on the right hand side you will find the link to the online index.
Cheers

Snap cando, did not get a warning about your post, sorry.

Thanks guys I was unaware that this site was available, found several of my Garbutt's there.
I am trying to prove that our branch of Garbutt's are related to the Townsville mob (as family law has it). Have just found that the suburb is named after Charle Garbutt's family. I think he is the son of William and Anne, she bought the chidren Charles, Arthur and John to Australia after William died.
-
Well, it sounds like you have got a start on things anyway.
When you say 'our branch of....' what district are you speaking of?Where is your branch?
There are some burials and other records for Garbutt's in Qld. and Nsw and Vic, but not much use posting them if we don't know what information you have. Don't want to go off n the wrong track.

Jamesb.1829 and Agnes Garbutt nee Hull b.1837 and thier girls Elizabeth , Margaret and Anne plus son James b.1873 came to Brisbane on the Roddel Bay in 1878. They had a son William according to the census but he is not on ships maifest.
James and Agnes came from Dorrington in Durham, but the Garbutts came from Kirby in Cleveland, and Bilsdale Yorkshire.
A Stephen Garbutt from Liverton migrated to Moss Vale NSW area and began the Garbutts of the Canberra region. Have not found a link yet.
Charles Garbutt from Townsville is rumoured to be related and I am trying to prove this connection.
-
Did you know that Agnes and James are interred together at Toowong Cemetery?
Agnes died in 1916 and James in 1894
There is another James, likely their son as the birth to death age match. He died in 1949 He is at Balmoral cemetery and is with a Reginald Percival Garbutt who died in 1979 aged 73.
There are other Garbutts there also including an Ann. Garbutt
Sue

Thank you I did not have death dates for these relatives. Ann was child of James and Agnes.
-
I apologise for omitting the link for the Brisbane and district cemetery search
http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/BCC:STANDARD::pc=PC_899
I find it one of the less user-friendly cem, sites as it demands a given name as well as a surname. Really annoying as you cannot just put in [for instance] Garbutt and see them all,
This is an interesting search you are on, so keep us posted.

Charles Overend Garbutt
Charles Overend Garbutt, 1848-1906, came from Yorkshire to Australia at the age of 16 with his mother and brothers. He married during a visit toEngland in 1871. In 1878 he bought Woodleigh station on the upper Herbert River and took up adjoining country which he named Tirrabella. In the early 1900s he suffered severe stock losses due to pleuropneumonia and cattle tick. He died in 1906.
His handwritten diaries for 1897, 1899 and 1903 tell of his daily life and his gold mining ventures. The diary for 1897 includes two accounts of General Meetings of Balcoona Shareholders and Directors Reports. The archive consists of original diaries and photocopies of them.
not sure as yet how this ties in but continuing searching

-
hello a little more for you
I couldn't find my copy so I went into town to the Townsville Bulletin and got a copy which I can send you if you want but here goes a bit of info
and I quote from the Townsville Daily bulletin from 74 year old John Garbutt talking about his greatgrandfather
The family came first of course Originally from Durham in England, the Garbutts immigrated in 1850 but it was Charles Overend Garbutt who with a taste for adventure, started the Far North Queensland contingent of the family in 1878 purchasing Woodleigh and Tirrabella Station in the are now known as Herberton.
A man of great energy he set about discovering the region he now called home, making some historic finds along the way.
He was an explorer and prospector and discovered Innot Hot Springs near Mt Garnet on the Tablelands and also discovered the Chillagoe copper deposit.
As a grazier he built a simple wooden farmhouse with available materials on the banks of the Wild River between Mt Garnet and Ravenshoe. An early colonist of the region and one of the founders of Herberton, Charles Garbutt stayed in the region until his death at Courtney Creek in 1905. (many years later in his honour a bridge was named Garbutt Bridge over the Wild River.)
The original homestead is still there it was a sawn timber building with hessian partions and ant-bed floors. For the rugged outdoorsman the rough-hewn dwelling was a suitable domicile. For his three sons Ernest John and Arthur growinf up in such a remote and harsh environment under the heavy mantle of self-sufficiency was also in the blood. When the earth began to crack and the waterholes dry up , however, the tough outback cattlemen decided it was time for a change disposing of their father's homestead to try their luck in the big smoke - Townsville.
When the Garbutt Brothers arrived in Townsville they purchased land which includes what are now the suburbs of Heatley and Vincent which they used as grazing paddocks and holding paddocks for sheep and cattle awaiting slaughter after the stock were untracked the the present Garbutt Railway Station.
the article goes into more details about the brothers setting up butcher's shop's etc.
So you can see that the suburb of Garbutt is named after Charles Overend Garbutt's sons.
hope this now gives you something to go on with seeing if the family connections are correct

G'day Members,
Of more recent times, the GARBUTTs of Townsville District were well-known, particularly Bill GARBUTT of Ingham
"Bill Garbutt, former mayor of Ingham, killed in a plane crash on/near Thorntons Gap, Hervey Range in 1977.
All of Mr Garbutt's relatives still live in Ingham so contacting any of those remaining relatives would probably produce lots of information.
The Garbutts (of Ingham), listed in the local Townsvlle & District phone book, are:-
GO Garbutt Cooks Lane Cordelia +61 7 4777 7230
P & D Garbutt 457 Cooks Lane Cordelia +61 7 4777 7244"
This information supplied by Mr Bill GARBUTT of Townsville, nephew of the above Bill GARBUTT.
Hope this is of assistance

Hello Jenn,
I forgot to mention that Bill GARBUTT as well as being the Mayor, was also Chairman of the North Queensland Regional Electricity Board, based in Townsville.
If my memory is correct, those deceased in the plane crash had all been attending a State Electricity Boards' Meeting.

Hello, I just saw this site and thought you might be interested in my connection. Charles Garbutt was my great grandfather. My grandmother was Dorothy Garbutt. She was one of Charles' 13 children born in the old bark homestead at Ravenshoe. She married Harvey Tice in Townsville and that is where my father Charles Tice was born in 1920. My Dad is 90 and still as sharp as a tack!
Kind regards

Hi
Am the grand daughter of William Overend Garbutt, ggrand daughter of John Overend Garbutt and gggrand daughter of Charles Overend Garbutt.
Looking for relations.
-
That would make you a, not too distant, cousin of mine. Who are your grandparents? The Garbutt one would be my Dad's first cousin. He left Townsville when he was 10yo (91 now) so didn't really know or remember many Garbutt relatives. We live in Victoria now.

Just to avoid any confusion, the Mount Cotton and Cleveland in these postings
have similar property/locality names to adjoining areas in south-east Queensland.
Hope this helps.

Hi again.
Thanks for the extra information. While living at Mt Cotton, Charles and Lucy Garbutt had 5 children - Olive, Charles Cecil (Arthur), Emmeline (who died at 6 months of age), John Overend and Lucy Maud. In the same year of Emmeline's passing, Charles's mother, Jane, also died in 1875. Jane had been living at "Langlands" on the old Cleveland Rd Cooparoo in Brisbane. Charles's 2 brothers also died - Arthur in 1873 and John in 1878. With few family ties still remaining, Charles and Lucy packed their belongings and headed north in 1878. :)
-
G'day again
I grew up in COORPAROO and knew the area of the former Langlands Estate very well.
A lot of the former estate has now been torn up for the new Busway.
Langlands Park is where the Eastern Suburbs Rugby League Club is accommodated.
It was formerly the home of the Eastern Suburbs District Cricket Club in Brisbane. For those with knowledge of cricket it is where the Test cricketer, Peter BURGE played.
If you can give me a more specific address, I will attempt to find the cottage if it still exists.

Hi
It does actually still exist. On my last visit to brisbane I actually found it.
Info i found:
• 1865 – 25th March – Jane purchases “Langlands” from John Bridges. The property consisted of 76 acres and 2 roods. Langland’s – Portion 58 – bounded by: Old Cleveland Road, Panitya Street, Norman Creek and St Leonards Street. The home stood on the crest of a hill on Old Cleveland Road almost opposite where Kirkland Avenue joins it. Langland’s is the oldest surviving masonry dwelling in the southern Brisbane suburb of Cooparoo. Today Langland’s is the staff house for Villanova College, 24 Sixth Avenue, Coorparoo
-
G'day Inghamite
Panitya Street has been completely relocated from a north-south direction to an east-west direction and now intersects Main Avenue at right angles.
Unfortunately many of the old buildings in the Langlands area of Coorparoo have been demolished, including our own. Rialto Street where we lived has now been closed off: Not sure whether this is temporary or not.

Have just found this site. Am a ggranddaughter of JO Garbutt and am trying to find out why Jane Garbutt nee Overend came to Australia with her sons and also her sister and brother-in-law Lucy and John Wilson and children. Also trying to locate Norton House in South Brisbane perhaps it was on Old Cleveland rd.
Also trying to find more info on the g.g.aunts Dot(Dorothy) Kit and May of whom I have several photos

Hi Beth2
A very good question and one I constantly asked myself when I first started researching the family history. Unfortunately - absolutely no idea !! Sorry. It just seems incredible that a woman with 3 young sons would move to another country. I assume you know she married a doctor in Brisbane and they had another son but the child died very young.
Who were your ancestors? My lineage is Jane Overend Garbutt - Charles Overend Garbutt - John Overend Garbutt - William Overend Garbutt - George Overend Garbutt - ME !!
-
hi inghamite,
I am the granddaughter of george overend doing research for school assigment! ;D
-
:) :) George has 4 grand daughters - Cass, Meg, Mary and Georgia. Which one are you?
-
Hi Inghamite
I have found out a lot about Jane Garbutt (Temple). My line is COG - John Overend Garbutt - Evelyn May was my grandmother. I have worked out that Jane did not come alone but with her sister and brother -in-law and their 3 children. The brother in law, John James Wilson died in 1865, one of his sons William Overend died just before Jane did in August 1875. The other son who is a cousin of COG worked with COG at Mt Cotton (the place was called Doongabbin) and subsequently with the family at Coolgarra, in the butcher shop there.
Have made assumptions about the move to Aust: all the important family members died in England, i.e. husband, father? grandfather?. Or she wanted to improve her social standing or wanted to leave a place that was rapidly changing because of the industrial revolution. Norton and Stockton are now suburbs of Middlesbrough a major industrial city. Went to the original address in 2009. No 3 The Square was a police station. What was a village in 1850 is all gone.

Hi
Starting to find you on the family tree. Do you know Katrina?
I have a copy of Jane Temple's will.
I also believed Jane's sister married a John Watson.
Is it possible to continue our emails privately? I would like to chat about your findings.

Hi Inghamite
I do know Katrina. I do not use emails much as I do not have the internet at my home, but I have an email address. Not sure how to send it to you though. I am intending to document as fully as I can the story of Jane and her time in Aus. Researching the places she lived from the moment of her arrival. Be in touch

Hi Inghamite
I am an Inghamite :P :) ;)
-
Hi all,
I stumbled on this post quite by accident, but it seems we are all connected. My Garbutt's came from Bilsdale in Yorkshire....
-
Hi.
Thanks for the post. I haven't been on this for quite some time.
We will have to compare families.
My ancestor's story:
Thomas Garbutt and Jane Overend had 3 sons – John Edward (1848), Charles Overend (1850) and Arthur Henry (1851) All three boys were born in Norton, Durham. (Jane was born in Yorkshire)
Thomas died in 1858.
In 1863, Jane and her 3 sons emigrated to Australia. Also on board was Lucy Ann (Jane’s sister) and her husband John James Wilson and their 2 young sons – William Overend and John Radcliffe (4). Also on board was Dr Thomas Burnett Temple.
Jane married Dr Temple in Brisbane Queensland in 1864.
Does any of this sound familiar?
Let me know if you think we are linked .
Cheers
Sue
-
Hi Sue,
For me, this whole part of my tree is a work in progress. My Garbutt's all came from around Middlesbrough/Guisborough/Bilsdale/Whitby in Yorkshire, and although I haven't proved it yet, I am fairly confident that all the Garbutt's from the area, including your Garbutt's, are linked. Norton is a suburb of Stockton-on-Tees, which is in Durham on the north bank of the Tees. My more recent Garbutt's are from Middlesbrough (along with most of the rest of my ancestors on my Paternal side) which is directly opposite Stockton on the south bank of the Tees in Yorkshire. I haven't yet linked your Garbutt's directly to mine, however I have surprisingly linked Jane Overend to my tree. Her Sister Isabel Overend married Joseph Ripley, their Daughter Eleanor Ripley married my 4th Cousin Henry Linskill. Henry was the brother of Author & Poet Mary Jane Linskill from Whitby (Google her).
Will keep you posted, and hope this helps,
Cheers
Chris
-
Hi Chris
We did not know Jane and Lucy had any other siblings. We cannot locate a birth certificate. Jane's parents were John Overend and Elizabeth Parker. She was born in Bentham between 1823 and 1826. Does this match your information?
Thomas and Jane were married at St Cuthbert's Church in Darlington, Durham on 15 September 1847.
My husband and I visited the UK in October last year and stayed at Stockton-on-Tees. It was incredible just being in the same places where my ancestors would have walked. I tried to visit a few cemeteries but Kev (husband) likened it to pulling teeth so didn't really "embrace" the experience !!!
We will have to try and find some more common ancestors.

Hi,
Would any of you be related/descendants of Charles Cecil Arthur GARBUTT b1874 the oldest son of Charles Overend Garbutt.

Sue, further research shows I had incorrect parents for Jane Overend. Isabel Overend's parents were Thomas Overend and Mary Sanderson, Jane's John Overend & Elizabeth Parker. John Overend was born in Lancaster, Lancashire, and as far as I can work out, John & Elizabeth actually had 6 children, possibly 7. Back to the drawing board.
-
Hi Sue,
I have done a little work on the Garbutts history but only so much as they concern me my connection is through a wife Annie Hides if you would like to PM me.
Cheers
-
...and this may be of interest. Charles Overend Garbutt's wife Lucy Watson was his first Cousin. Lucy Watson was the daughter of John Watson, a Civil Engineer, and Elizabeth Overend, Jane Overend's sister...
-
It was really interesting how they found partners in "the old days" Brothers married their widowed sisters-in-laws, brothers and sisters from one family married brothers and sisters in another family. My family tree is a really interesting cross over or web of interesting relationships.
My grandmother would take me for cemetery walks, which I hated as a small child but now those names all make sense and the reason they were buried together fits like pieces of a jigsaw.
-
Charles Overend Garbutt is in my line. His oldest son married Annie Ethel Hides. Their oldest daughter Alice Mary Heatley was my grandmother.
I'd really like to find out more about Charles Overend Garbutt's father and his line. I know his father Thomas Edward Garbutt born in Danby in 1823 and died in Stockton in 1861. He was an iron merchant. He married Jane Overend in 1847 and they had a daughter who died in infancy and then three sons. 14 years later, in 1861, Thomas Edward Garbutt died.
Can anyone help me with information about his forebears?
Thanks so much
Louise

Hi Louise,
I am related to Annie Ethel Hides side of the family if you want any information on that line. Her mother was my great grandfather’s half brother a very sad and interesting story of their lives. If you want to message me I’d love to give you the information.
Cheers.
