Title: Livingstone to Australia (Hugh McDiarmid Livingstone)
Post by: OnEaglesWings on Saturday 09 June 07 05:36 BST (UK)
Hugh McDiarmid Livingstone was born abt 1858 in Argyllshire, Scotland.  I am researching any ancestry of Hugh and the connection to Dr David Livingstone (the famous missionary).  Hugh at sometime moved to Australia, married Mary Ann Jane Sanderson (born Maitland, New South Wales, Australia) on the 26 July 1883.  Hugh was the first to establish a store at Mullumbimby, New South Wales, Australia in1894 on a small hill on the corner of Jubilee and Azalea avenues near the dairy. He built a farmhouse on Ivy Hill on a small hill on the corner of Jubilee and Azalea avenues near the dairy.

He had three sons and two daughters, Janet b 1884, Alexander Hugh b 1886, Angus b 1891, Annie b 1896, David Charles b 1894 all in New South Wales.

David Charles married Laura Marshall and died in Kingaroy, Queensland 1966.

Hoping this can be of assistance to someone and they can to me.

Hi David  :)

Welcome to Rootschat!

It would help us to know what to look for if you tell us everything you already know about Hugh.  For example, do you know his parents' names?  How do you know he was born in Argyllshire?  etc.

Then let us know exactly what you want, for example if you want to find his immigration records, and we'll do our best to help  :)

Good morning Members,

This may help insofaras the ancestry is concerned, but then it may be a red-herring!!

This is a connotation of the names you mention.
I have a Ewen LIVINGSTON b c1815, who married Catherine McDIARMID in October 1842 Aharacle, Argyll, SCO.

There were many families of McDIARMIDs / McDERMIDs who lived in the Northern NSW area Clarence River, even Mullimbimby, including my father-in-law who was born in Maclean in 1896.

Maclean is not that far from Mullimbimby and the families did move northwards;  even into Queensland!

The whole family came out from Argyll in 1839 to the Taree area..

The above could have been Scottish in-laws of the person you are seeking.

Just a snippet to make your chase interesting!!

Hi all,

All I have is family knowledge about Hugh bering born in Argylshire.  I do not know any of his parents. The first I have on him is that he was 36 when David was born in 1894.  I now he was always Hugh when in Australia but also think there has to a a connection somehow with McDiarmid family as suggested EDO.

Something about his family.  Information from NSW Birth Deaths & Marriages:

Yr Born     Name              District
1884        Janet               MacLean
1886        Alexander H     MacLean
1891        Angus              Lismore
1894        David Charles  Murwillumbah
1896        Annie               Murwillumbah

I am searching for his imigration record (Scotland to Australia) (Pre birth of Janet 1884 and birth records (abt 1858) in the hope that it will reveal something about his parents and siblings.

EDO,  What is the possibility that Ewen LIVINGSTON b c1815, who married Catherine McDIARMID had a daughter that was Hugh's mother and therefore got the name McDiarmid?

Just love family history hunting.

Thanks to the members for there interest.

Hi David and another welcome to RootsChat

Was your 1883 NSW marriage certificate too early to give parents and birthplace? or did it just say Scotland? This information was supposed to be on NSW marriage records, but I think not enforced until the 20th century. Do you know when/where Hugh died. His death certificate may contain useful information.

The first 20 years of civil records for Scotland are on the IGI. Your 1858 birth should be among them. There are 4 possibles around your time frame in Argyll

If you could match a birth to a parent on a marriage or death??

G'day again David G

There are some interesting facets of your gene. chase.

My wife's GGrandfather was born Ewen McDIARMID in Glenmore Argyll in 1827 [Birth Certificate confirms this as were the surnames of his siblings].
However, the whole family of 13 changed their name to McDERMID for their journey to Australia in 1839 [Possibly there could have been a clerical 'error'].

Then Ewen became known as Hugh!  So Ewen McDIARMID became Hugh McDERMID!! He died 19 Oct 1910 Palmer's Channel, NSW.

Ewen [Hugh] married Janet [Jessie] McPHEE on 20 Mar 1849 Free Presbyterian Church, Bushgrove, [Glenrose], NSW.  They also had 13 children.

I mention these facts, not as a red-herring, but as a possibility of a link between the families, of which I have no detail.  Perhaps their location could give a clue.

Yes, David, Genealogy is certainly an interesting past-time.

Will you let me know how you fare with your research?

Hello again David G
Refer also to my earlier response.

Quite possibly and, like many aspects of genealogy, must not be discounted.

Ewen McDiarmid [Hugh McDERMID] did not have a Catherine as one of his 13 siblings:  But there is a strong possibility that they could have been related.

As I mentioned previously, there were and no doubt still are, a lot of McDERMID [McDIARMID]s in Northen NSW.

Do you know when and on what vessel Catherine came to Australia from Scotland?

Can you be sure that they came from Argyl?
There were a lot of McDIARMIDs who came from adjoining Perthshire!

Also do you know where and when they settled?

Hi Trish,

From information given to me, the birth certificate of David Livingstone had his father as Hugh McDiamid Livingstone, a storekeeper aged 36.

On checking again it could have been his marriage certificate that said born Argyleshire, Scotland.

I will check further.

If you haven't checked the marriage detail - it is worth it (although it may not have all the required information  :( ). Marriage information is usually more reliable than death details as it is given by the person not an informant.

I now have further information for that may help.  I am told by a relative that Hugh McDermott Livingstone (not the spelling as I have also McDiarmid) was born 14 Nov 1854 and arrived in Melborne 1879 on the Lock Bary.  :)

My research has not found anything on Lock Bary as I hoped  ???

Anyway I am still digging.

Did your relative specify where the "Lock Bary" information is from?

Scotland's People has a Hugh LIVINGSTONE baptised 13 Dec 1854 in Tobermory, Argyllshire - parents Hugh and Flora (no maiden name given in the index for Flora).  I tried to view the associated image in hopes of finding that out, but SP has linked the index entry to the wrong page, so I've just written off to them to get my 5 credits back, and to direct me to the correct page!

Anyway, the same Hugh LIVINGSTONE is shown on FamilySearch.org.

Some updated information, with thanks to a Rootschat member in the Chat room.

Hugh's parents are Hugh (or sometimes seen as Ewin) Livingstone and Catherine McDiarmid (Hugh's middle name). Other details of parents unknown. Hugh had a brother Angus born 22/12/1844 (yet to be confirmed but more than likely possible.

Hugh come to Australia on the ship Loch Ryan (not Loch Barry) and arrived in Melbourne.

Hugh died: 18 May 1937, Kingaroy, Queensland Rego:  1937/002029
Father:  Hugh
Mother: Catherine McDIARMID

I am still trying to link them to Dr David Livingstone.   Getting closer but.

Thanks, in advance. for anyones help.

Hi David G (and other contributors)

I have stumbled across this forum by accident and it has answered something that has been driving me crazy.

Hugh McDiarmid was my Great Grandfather.   All of our family records said that he came out on the SS Loch Gary and I have been going crazy trying to find the immigration records relating to this.  I had almost reached the conclusion that he was either a stowaway or he swam out.

Saw your posting dated 15 Aug 07.   Put in Loch Ryan into the Vic Unassisted Passenger index and up pops Hugh Livingston, right age but no "e" - but I'll take that.   Only question is, what was the source of your info on the ship being the Loch Ryan??????

So where do I fit in.

Hugh McDiarmid's second child, Alexander Hugh, was my grandfather.   David Charles, Hugh's fourth child was affectionately known by all the family as Uncle Dave and his wife, Aunt Laura was your grandmothers sister.   Uncle Dave and Aunt Laura had no children.   They both lived at Cooksley St Hamilton Brisbane until their deaths - Uncle Dave on 07 Mar 1966, Aunt Laura on ?????   Uncle Dave did not die in Kingaroy.   We have a copy of Aunt Laura's will.   Your grandmother must have been Evelyn Jane (mentioned in the will)

I think you can forget about trying to link Hugh McDiarmid to Dr David.   If it exists at all, it is probably a number of generations prior.

I still have to go through all the information that has been posted on this forum and try to fit it into what I now have on the family tree.   We have the names and b'days of Hugh McDiarmids siblings.

I would love to hear back from anyone with further information on this side of the family.

Hi Terry and welcome to RootsChat  :)

I don't have any relationships with the Livingstone family - just wanted to say hello - I'm sure the others will be along shortly when they see your post.
