I'm trying to locate family of a Wilson SUMMERS who lived in Fraserburgh possibly up to the late 1920's.
Help greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
James.
-
Hi James
Scotland's People shows 1 possible death that might fit.
1937 SUMMERS WILSON M 82 FRASERBURGH /ABERDEEN 196/00 0048
As don't know any more details, think worth you checking this one on Scotland's People to see if parents names match your records.
Ann
-
Ann,
Thanks. The one I'm interested in is in the photo I posted under the heading - Who are these people?
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,237456.0.html
I just don't know when the photo was taken other than pre '28 probably because the lady in front on the grass moved to Canada then.
Doing my sums, I suppose 'your' man might fit.
Thanks.
James.
-
James
Sorry can't help with the photo fraid but if you know his parents details then you can certainly confirm it with that death cert one way or other. There are other Wilson's there but the dates just didn't fit.
Hope this one is your man!

Bless you Ann and thanks.

was just having a quick skim through the 1861 before I closed Ancestry down. There are quite a few Summers from the Rathen parish who are fishermen. Could be a connection?
Also in Fraserburgh.
Once you've had a chance to look let me know if you need any more census stuff cos on Ancestry you don't pay whereas on S people it costs credits ! (All Scottish census is available on Ancestry)
Ann
-
Looking at Ancestry and it seems they want 'us' to subscribe -
-
Hi James
Oh! They'll try any which way to get you to join ! there's not a lot of Scottish stuff there to be honest. I use my husband's sub but he;s English and gets loads from it
Ann

But thanks not only for the work you did but your time and advice.
You certainly are good at this.

Ann,
I think it is probably a form of something else though what .....??? I keep thinking of a politician with a maybe not so different name, but his name just stays out of reach - must be the hour ...
Censi - http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/APG/1999-05/0927683474
Very likely I will - when I've done something constructive with what has been found so far.

Only one eway to prove it.Start from the one you have and work forward. However once you get to the point where the on line records stop will mean a trip to GROS - or ask someone who;s going to look up. I have managed to bring quite a bit of mine forward to try and find my dad's lost cousins.
It was hard slog cos they all had big families and I'll need to go back there one day to finish it off. But the good news is the further forward you come the easier it is to find the records!
So those folks in the phone book could well be connected! Would be great!

Ann,
Forwards? Backwards? I'm spinning around here - gobsmacked.
James.
-
James
Backwards is the only way to go from a proven point to get ancestors but it is possible to bring stuff forward to find out if you have living relatives.
My dad had no idea who his cousins on his mother's family's side were just roughly whereabouts they lived so using my granny's birth certificate and a visit to GROS, I was able to find all her siblings (11 in all), then found their marriages and children. From that found the childrens' marriages and their children and found a whole bunch of living cousins.
I knew my granny was the eldest of 12 but because on line births only go up to 1906 on S People couldn't see the others cos they were all after that so had to go to GROS where I could.
Still got more to look for tho cos big family!
Ann
-
Ann,
I sometimes think how hard it all is, what with naming patterns, poor spelling, lack of records etc etc - but its going to be much harder for researchers say in 20 or 30 years - cremations, fewer marriages, double barreled names et al. Phew! Am glad I'll be extinct by then ;D
James.
-
James
Ah but just think how much work you'll have saved them! You'll have done the hard bit cos you;re looking for information that isn't anywhere like as readily available as what we have nowadays.
They'll have it easy!
Ann

Ann
Ann,
Do you really think so? I'm not recording what I am doing now, only stuff from the past.
What led to this Summers thing was a rellie (who's 80+) recalling the name but not much else - not realising that there's a connection.
You may be around that far forward - I certainly won't.
James.
-
James
Both me and my husband started this because our duaghter asked us about her ancestors because of a project she was dong at school.
It kinda snowballed from there and am recording it all on FTM so when I disappear she has it and she has promised me she'll look after it! (We'll see). Told her would come back and haunt her if she doesn't!
Ann
-
Ann,
I can't think of any more laudable or valid reason for doing it than that, except maybe as a kind of tribute to those who went before, for, are we not a part of them and they a part of us?
James.
-
James
I absolutely agree. I have found it fascinating not just finding them but all the social history that went with them. Most of them had very hard lives indeed and lived in apalling conditions.
Is amazing how many survived - but just as well they did or we wouldn't be here.
My elder family members are really amazed at what I've found and tho it's brought the odd tear or two when they reminisce, they are so grateful to be finding out things they never knew.
I just wish had started it years ago when more of them were around to tell me things!
Ann

So, now, dust settling some, could you look at the Briar Cott photo (again) and form some sort of idea when it might have been taken please? Bear in mind his age etc that we now have.
You can if you wish put in the 'round pile' ;D

Can tell you just the place to post. Put it on the photo restoration board asking for it to be dated. They can do fab things in there.

Hi, Ann!
Saw your interest in my Great Uncle Wilson Summers (1854-1937) of Briar Cottage, Hexagon St. (=Victoria Street), Fraserburgh.
I have also contacted James Craig on a separate website and sent him loads of info'.
Wilson was indeed a talented man; a master cabinetmaker, he was in business with a brother William (my Great Grandfather) as 'Summers Brothers Furniture Saloon' in Albert St, Fr., just round the corner from Victoria St.
The photo that James posted shows Briar Cottage (left) and Ivy Cottage (right) - these houses were built and occupied by the 2 brothers c 1900 - Wilson in 'Briar', William in 'Ivy' where they each raised their families; until the 1980s, my grandparents still lived at 'Ivy' and I spent many happy childhood holidays there.
'Briar' passed out of the family with the death of Wilson and was bought by a family called Robertson; Wilson was a talented amateur watercolourist and also wrote articles about his life in Fraserburgh for The People's Journal in the '30s - I have copies of his paintings & articles.
I have recently visited Ivy Cottage twice already this year - it's where my Dad was born in 1917.
Unfortunately, the photo of 'Wilson' that James posted to me (with the 'lady on the grass' in front of 'Briar') is NOT Wilson, at least not according to the well-documented photos of him that I have!
Many of Wilson's (13) children emigrated to Detroit, USA in the early 20th c.; I have copies of all of their Immigration Docs. via ellisisland.org and have made contact with three of his descendants (still living in Detroit, and N.Carolina).
Wilson's father, also Wilson (b.1829) was quite a character himself - he was a well-known 'celebrity' in Fraserburgh in his day, particularly as Captain of the schooner 'Philorth' which out-ran a French blockade of The Baltic during the Franco-Prussian War, successfully delivering his cargo of herring to the Baltic ports!
I don't know how much of this is of any interest to you, but feel free to write again and we may swap e-mails (?).
Doug (Summers).

I've only just seen your posting - my visit to the forum triggered by a contact from someone looking for a connection between Wilson Summers and Wilson Summers Trail.
Would you have any ideas about that topic?
James.
