Title: 1901 Cavan census - Knocknalosset (Knockbride parish) - LUCAS
Post by: Trix on Friday 08 June 07 07:38 BST (UK)
Dear List,
Does anyone have access to, or advice on, searching the 1901 census for Cavan?  Even just a list of which DED area covers Knockbride area would be helpful.

Are any of the earlier censuses available for Cavan (I am aware there is only sketchy coverage for some years / counties)

I am looking for the family of John William LUCAS b. abt 1850 who was a farmer in Knocknalosset, his wife Mary Jane [née Bodle or Bodell] b. 1852 d. 1922 & their 11 children.

Thanks for any help,
Trix

Hello Trix,

There are no Census records available for Ireland until that of 1901. There are a number of Census Substitutes.  Griffiths Valuation of Ireland  (http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths.php) which took place between 1848 to 1861 is a good source for finding ancestors although it only lists the head of household. There are twelve people with the surname Lucas listed on the Valuation for Cavan which took place in 1856-7.

I received a message from PRONI this morning advising me that they only hold microfilmed copies of the 1901 Census for the six counties which constitute Northern Ireland. You'll need to contact the National Archives of Ireland at Bishop Street, Dublin 8 to see the Census for the rest of Ireland.

Dear Les,
I have managed a few more snippets - but basically I am still a bit stuck:

John William LUCAS, son of John b. abt 1850 (probably baptised Church of Ireland) & died 1925
married 4 Oct 1877 Knockbride Church Of Ireland Parish Church, County Cavan
Mary Jane BODELL  b. 1852 Drumhillagh North, Knockbride Parish & died 1922

I think Mary Jane is the daughter of William BODELL (or Bodle) farmer of Drumhillagh North, Knockbride Parish who married Ann WILSON 1851 .

I would love any help to find John William Lucas' parents & to find out more about William Bodell.

Thanks for any advice or tips,
cheers,
Bron

Hi, I'm not connected to either family but I was raised in the area so I might be able to point you in the direction of some folk if you email me. I only signed on to this site recently so I'm not able to access your address. Les

Hi
My great grandfather was (we think) Thomas Robert Lucas from Cavan but Im finding
it really hard to find any info on him, my grandfather had always said they grew up in
Cootehill or Dernycash but according to google maps that last place doesnt even exist. My grandfather died in the late 90s so I think he may have missed the 1911 census, any information on tracking the cavan lucas family would be greatly appreciated thanks  :)

Hi, if you look at a google map and find the R191 Cootehill to Bailieborough road and just to the right of the word Latully you will find Dernakesh which I'm sure is the townland you call Dernycash. You will also see Knocknalossett close to Dernakesh. I remember my late mother who was raised in Knocknalossett speak of a Lucas family who lived nearby and when the parents died their daughter went to Australia. Les

Dear Les & Tyler,
I think we all all discussing the same family.  John William Lucas' youngest daughter did emigrate to Australia (& is my connection). She had a brother Thomas Robert LUCAS born 1890 Knocknalosset, County Cavan - so that sounds like your G grandfather Tyler.  I will try & do a personal message to you both so we can email,
Cheers

I have been researching several Wilson families in Knockbride Parish. An Ann Wilson married William Bodell 31 MAR 1851, Knockbride. Ann was the daughter of William Wilson and she was 21 years of age. (b.1830)
I have a transcript of a letter sent by a William Kelly of Lisdonan, Knockbride, to Jane Wilson in Canada. In one paragraph he writes to Jane " your sister Ann, she and her husband are well and her  family. She has 3 daughters away from home, 2 in New Zealans (sic) and 1 in Australia".
I have been unable to prove that this "sister Ann" is the sister of Jane in Canada.
There is a Wm. Bodel, and wife Ann, both age 65, in the 1901 Drumhilla census. Ann must have died between 1901 and 1911, because in 1911 William is a widower.
The spelling of name varies from Bodell, Bodle Bodel.

Perhaps there is more than one 'John William Lucas' in Co. Cavan (?).

My mother was a daughter (born 1920) of John William Lucas and Frances (nee Brown). She was one of their twelve children born in Co. Cavan.

As I know, he was a farmer and merchant, who lived in Cavan until sometime in the twenties, when the family moved to Belfast.

Perhaps they were related (?).

As a child, I visited the home in which my mother and her family lived. It was at an intersection of roads near Cootehill, and in that day was still known as "Lucas's Cross."

She spoke of Knockbride Church and also mentioned the Church of Ireland at Dernakesh, Co. Cavan, as their parish church, at which births, marriages and deaths were registered.

As mentioned in a direct message to “T R Lucas,” I haven’t been on this site in “yonks”…certainly BC (Before COVID)…looks like October 2015. I trust that you and yours have come through okay and that vaccinations are being enjoyed by all who can.

Several things have become apparent to me through either reading things posted here more carefully or various experiences I have been fortunate to enjoy since my posting my initial “Reply.”

As “aghadowey” correctly pointed out, the  grandfather of “T R Lucas” was the brother (11 years younger) of John William Lucas (my maternal grandfather).

These brothers were two of the children of John William Lucas (the elder), who is mentioned in 1901 Census as “Head of Household” with wife, Mary Jane, in Knocknalossett.

“tyler35” (George) is my second cousin. His parents, Robert and Brenda, in Hillsborough are my cousins (Robert being the son of my Uncle Bobby and Auntie Lily, as “tyler35” said. Naomi and Salfran are “tyler35”’s aunts (Robert’s sisters).

His paternal grandfather, however, is John Wm. (the younger), not the younger brother, Thomas Robert, who is “T R Lucas”’s grandfather.

So, as to my “fortunate experiences,” in August 2018, my wife, Susan, and I made a trip from Houston, Texas, USA (our home) to Ireland. It was the first time I was there, since my Mother, sisters and I lived in Strangford, County Down, while my Dad was in Vietnam with the US Air Force. That was 1968-69, when I was 13 and in 3rd form at the Down High. Half a century hence!

We stayed in Newcastle and were able to see several many (sadly, not all) of my MANY cousins. Everyone was most gracious to us and we had a “grand” time.

A particular highlight was spending the day with my Hillsborough cousins (George & Letty, Robert & Brenda, Naomi & Salfran and probably several others whom I shamefully neglect to name, not counting the children and grandchildren of the aforementioned).

Later during our visit to Ireland, we drove to Cootehill, County Cavan. I had made arrangements with the Church of Ireland parishes, there, and two very kind folk, who remembered being neighbors of the Lucas’s there, chauffeured me about to Drumgoon Cemetery, Dernikesh Chapel of Ease and the old Lucas farmhouse and shop. Fantastic!!

I hope y’all check this site sometime, soon; I would love to hear from you.

Kind regards,

Jonathan Lucas Jee
