I am looking for more information on my Lyle family tree. My g.g.grandfahter was Isaac Kellum Lyle who married Elizabeth Hamilton in Nova Scotia. I don't know when they were married. I don't know anything about Elizabeth except that I have a picture of her. She is quite lovely.
Isaac and Elizabeth had children:
Gerard Thomas Lyle (my grandfather who married Catherine Louis Thomas)
William
Joseph
Harriet
Leo Powers Lyle not sure at all where the Powers name came in!!
I have no info on any of these folks, except that Gerard Thomas Lyle was born July 19, 1911 in Massachusetts and died about 1961 in Massachusetts.
Any info on these folks would be very welcome!

I am wondering if you might want to also be checking on the U.S. board for her, as
I don't see the family on the 1901...I see Isaac Huskins Lyle and wife Margaret
( Messenger) on the 1881 in N.S. / Port La Tour, Shelburne with isaac Jr & siblings...
However, his sister Agness Winnifred Lyle born Cape Egro ( as transcribed, but likely Negro?), N.S. was married in Mass.
as well....in 1901....to a Robert Edward Corey

Meant to say that Powers, Lyle and Huskins are all N.S. names.
Saw that there is an older couple on the 1881, in port la Tour all born N.S
Alexander LYLE Scottish age 65 & also aFisherman
Eunice English age 63
John H LYLE age 23 Farmer
James W LYLE age 21 Farmer
George C LYLE 14
...so
looked for more and found this:
A submission on FHS site / Isaac Lyle
born Cape Negro to parents: Alexander Lyle & Eunice Blades
If you can find out the middle names of the siblings you may get more clues as to
female ancestors maiden surnames....( as the Powers & Huskins above likely are)
The Scottish often used this method of naming, but don't know the sequence off hand...
The forenaming also had a pattern:
First son was often named after paternal g-father
Second son- maternal g-father
first daughter - maternal g-mother
2nd daughter - paternal g-mother
This can all get rather confusing should 2 siblings choose to follow the same pattern, though....as all names may be the same...
In your case, there weren't a lot of Lyles
By the way there was also a Seth ( & family) and a Jeremiah LYLE in Port La Tour on the 1881...who may have been Isaac Jr's siblings
-
Here you go...
Another submission:
Alexander Lyle
born 1814 Clyde River, Shelburn, N.S.
to parents: John Lyle and Sarah Huskins
So Alexander's son John is likely John Huskins Lyle...If there is a pattern here, I'll let you figure it out ::)
There was an Isaac Huskins in N.S. as well from whom the forename may have generated...

Just a quick correction on Agnes Foster Lyle, and her sister Winifred Ariel Lyle, daughters of Isaac Kellum Lyle and Margaret Messenger. :)
Thank you for your info on Alexander, John, etc. I have these folks pretty covered it seems. The thing I am looking for are the spouses of Isaac Huskins Lyle's children:
Eunice Ethea
Isaac Kellum....married Elizabeth Hamilton
Agnes....who you say married Robert Edward Corey (will check thanks!)
George....who married "Maggie"? No last name known
Mary E.
Sarah D. .....married Alvin Greenwood
Arthur Sidney .....who emigrated to Conneticut, USA
Edgar R.
Winifred Ariel....married Locke Amsden Larkin (what a name!)
Gladys Violet.....
Still looking for more info! Thanks for all of your wonderful help!!

hi, Joy....
It says right in the extracted file that the father was
Isaac H. Lyle & the mother Margaret A. Messenger
I initially worked from the 1881 which shows:
Isaac H LYLE Scottish 30 born N.S. Fisherman
Margret LYLE Scottish 24 born N.S.
Eunice LYLE 4 born N.S.
Isaac LYLE 3 born N.S.
Agness LYLE baby Born: Dec; 4/12 N.S.
Didn't Isaac Kellum Lyle marry Elizabeth Hamilton ? ;) j.J.
( I now see the family on the 1901, wasn't sure as children on 1881 no longer there ... )
-
Yes, Isaac Kellum married Elizabeth Hamilton.
Still seeing if I can get any more info on her, especially birth and death dates. I do know she was born in the 1880s sometime. :) I'm fairly sure she was born in Cape Negro, Shelburne, Nova Scotia.
Have received great news from a person who helped with the Lyle family tree in Wisconsin. He has given me SO much info! He is also sending some copies of documents for me and I can't wait to get them!
Cheers,
Joy

There are some N.S. births 1880's on the IGI, but none for Cape Negro...
Do you have her age from some censuses, I imagine? J.J.
