Looking to get past my brickwall with the Robson family of Whitby.
Thomas Robson born in Whitby 1896, any information on his early years would be fantastic.
Thomas (b 1896) was the son of Thomas Robson (born 1866, location unknown, died Sept 1933 in Whitby, buried Larpool Lane) and Sarah Elizabeth Brewster (born 1874 Whitby, died 1961 Whitby, buried Larpool Lane). I have found a 1901 Census for Sarah and their eldest children, but as Thomas snr was a merchant seaman, I expect he was at sea at the time of the census. As I don't know where Thomas snr was born, I can't trace him earlier.
I do know this : his father was Geoge Robson, fisherman from Whitby. There is a George Robson buried in Larpool Lane Cemetery, but I have not yet confirmed him to be Thomas snr's father.
At some time, the family (possibly Thomas jnr) had a fish & chip shop next door to the one time residence or Capt Cook.

Could this be Thomas Snr?

Hello again
Thank you for your help. I have their marriage certificate, this is where I gained that George was his father. George is marked as deceased on said record.
There have been a few of the family who lived in Church Street, Whitby. I have records showing 166 Church Street, others with Low Hospital Yard.
I also have Sarah Elizabeth's death record, and she died at 7 Saxon Road in 1961. This looks to be the residence of her daughter (christian name unknown, looks to be F M, who had married a Williams.
I also have Thomas' death record, and his death was registered by his son H. Robson (possibly Henry?) who lived at 10 Spital Bridge, Whitby in 1933.
Sarah Elizabeth also lived in Church Street at the time of their marriage, who knows, they may have been close neighbours!
Thank you again

The 1901 Census that I have, lists Sarah Elizabeth as living in Throston, Hartlepool. This is confirmed by the presence of her brother, Henry.
Their neighbor is John Robson, born 1851 in Whitby. He lives with his wife Elizabeth and their three children.
John Robson and Henry Brewster are both listed as labourers in a ship yard

Thank you for your help. I am looking into John a little more (and making copious notes along the way!). He had a brother named Thomas, but the birth year is out by 14 years. Maybe he is a cousin? I will let you know
Thank you again

Thank you for your help. I have traced John Snowden Robson back and found that his family had an adopted son in the 1871 census by the name of Thomas Janney, aged 4. This fits with alot of Thomas' details and I am currently following this lead.

Becrad,
John Snowden Robson was my Great Great Grandfather. His Mothers' name was Ann Snowden, hence his middle name. Are you related to him?

Hi Kat
Thanks for your post, I am related to John Snowden Robson by adoption only. John was the older 'brother' of my GG Grandfather, Thomas Robson (born Thomas Janney, adopted by the RObson family somewhere between 1866 and 1871). I found this out by chance, trying to trace my GG grandfather, I found his wife and family in Hartlepool in the 1901 census, Thomas himself was serving in the Army in South Africa at the time. Their immediate neighbour was John Snowden Robson and his family. Noting he was born in Whitby, I traced his family back and connected the dots. Thomas Janney was born to Elizabeth Janney at Flowergate, Whitby in 1866, but after that I have found no trace of her. There is no father listed on the birth record, and I can find no information through St Mary's at Whitby under either name. He popped up in George and Ann Robson's household in the 1871 census, with his surname as Janney and a note that he was adopted.
There is a bit of a far-fetched chance that he may actually be John Snowden Robson's illegitimate son, who would have been 18 years old at the time of Thomas' birth. We will probably never find out who his father actually is.
Kind regards from Australia

Hi Bec,
First off I must tell you, John Snowden Robson is my Great Grandfather..I am trying to make myself younger than I am.lol
It is great to hear from you cousin. I also looked at the Thomas Janney info, as I do remember seeing that before. I also see him on the 1881 census. as 12 yrs old
John Snowden Robson is still living at home in 1881and if you look you will see a Margaret Elizabeth Harland as a visitor, she is my Great Grandmother.
Who did Thomas(Janney) Robson marry and where did they live?, I am not able to find him anywhere
Thanks,
