Title: Residence search please
Post by: yorkshirerose on Monday 04 June 07 22:24 BST (UK)
I have a marriage certificate for a Joseph Holley (Occupation...professional) and a Kate Sturgess, married 8th October 1884 in the parish church in the parish of Bishop Ryder Birmingham, Warwick, residence at time of marriage for both of them was Lancaster Street, no number mentioned.

I was wondering if anyone could please do a street search for 1883 - 84?

I appreciate any help on this as my Joseph as been giving me a headache for 3-4 yrs now :-)

Regards

If they both gave the same address it was more than likely a "convenience" address used to enable them to marry in a particular church/parish

What additional info. do you think a street search will give?A postal address will typically give the head occupant and possibly occupation.According to Kelly's ( 1884 ) there are no Holleys listed.Apart from Carole's info. this may have been the address they intended to live at after marriage.
Tell us what the problem is with this family and we may be able to help.

Hi Jim

Was trying to find out if it was a b & b or hostel of some sort. My gr gr grandfather was down as a vocalist on various certificates so was wondering if they were travelling around music halls etc......they married in 1884 had their son in 1885 but in 1891 census I can find their son, my gr grandfather, living with his grandmother in Hastings but no sign of Joseph and his wife then in 1901 my gr grandfather was living with his mother and grandmother in Hastings but no sign of Joseph. When his son married in 1903 Joseph was down as deceased......

regards
Liz

Hello Liz
Looking at Lancaster St. in 1881 it shows 2 possible dwellings that appear to be commercial lodging houses. One in particular was no.20 where there were about 8 or 9 lodgers. The other was a back-to-back with about 4 lodgers.
If they were travelling around they may have been in lodgings in 1891 but missed off the census. The son may have been left with Grandma because of schooling, but you've probably worked that out for yourself.

Found a Kate Holly age 30 visiting Wells Family in Hastings. Her birth place is given as St.Leonard's Sussex and is listed as married. Is that her?

You're a star!!! Thankyou for that, definitely have more to look at now a few things are falling into place.....

Thankyou for the Kate Holly in 1891 too, someone else as also sent me that and I think (Hope) it is her......my Kates son and mother were living in the St Leonards area so wondering if thats the reason place of birth for Kate was down as there, my Kate (Elizabeth Kate Jane) was actually born in Hungerford Berkshire but we all know how details can be written down wrong on the census entries!!!!

Many thanks again Jim

Liz
