Title: The Alma & N. End, Grenville Arms Burnham Bucks
Post by: Abiam2 on Saturday 02 June 07 15:12 BST (UK)
Does anyone know the history of these places?  If I remember the Grenville Arms is in Burnham Beeches but I might be wrong as it is so long since I was there!  My 3xGreat Grandfather worked and lived at both.  I would like to know more,
Regards, Abiam

Hello again Abiam,

I happened to be looking at some Historical Directories yesterday and found an entry in one of them - 1876 Beds/Bucks/Berks - under 'Commercial'

Winch Martha - Grenville Arms, Dropmore Road

I know it doesn't really tell you anything but I thought I would send it anyway.

Regards,

ANYAS

Hi, I've only just joined because I saw your question on google. My 4th grandfather was working at the Grenville Arms in 1901. Apparently it was in the North end of Burnham and was cleared in 1980's to make space for the telephone exchange. When did your relative work there?

Hi Phain,

First welcome to Roots Chat - friendly people ready to help!

Can't find Martha Winch in 1891 (has probably died)

In 1891 Martha Winch was living in the High Street Burnham.

In the 1881 census RG 11 Piece 1461 Folio 30 Page 6

My 3 X Great Grandfather Thomas Vincent, born 1801.   The head of the household is Martha Winch  a widow aged 46 with 4 children aged between 6 and 15 all born in Burnham Bucks.  Thomas is a widower aged 81 and classed as stepfather!  I don't have any any info on Martha Winch - I assume he was Stepfather to Martha.

In the 1871 census Thomas was at this address - Dropmore Road, Alma Row, Burnham and agd 70 with his 12 year old son Alfred and is working as a Beer House Keeper.

And that's all I have!  So we are 20 years apart with relatives.  I still haven't worked out exactly where the Grenville Arms were.............

Sorry I can't be more help,

Regards,
Abiam

Thanks Abiam,
My ancestor was Boaz Gohm who married Emily Stannett from Burnham in 1853. He was a farmworker in Lynch Hill Burnham throughout his life until in 1901 census  he is described as being a publican at The Grenville Arms. By then he was a widower aged 70 so an interesting change. Apparently there are Goodford papers relating to the pub from 1902-1922 in the Archives at Reading ref D/ESB B68/1-23 but I wouldn't easily be able to get there. Not sure if they send out photocopies. Cheers Phain

What an amazing name Boaz Gohm!
It's worth giving the BRO in Reading a ring they are quite helpful.  I am in Spain so am in the same boat as you regarding trying to find records.  You could try Maidenhead Library or maybe Slough Library they might be able to help you find more.
Sorry I can't help any more but if you do find anything about The Grenville Arms history I would love to hear,
Good luck with your searching,
Abiam

Boaz Gohm is in my hubby's tree distantly. There is a group called Burnham Historians who usually have a table at a fayre in Burnham Park Hall, sure it's in the run up to Xmas. I'll ask them about these places if I see them.

They don't have a website that I know of. As far as I know they are a few local people who research the local area and publish books.
Upcoming events at Burnham Library has this http://www.buckscc.gov.uk/bcc/events/detail.jsp?section=library&contentid=-1748346563

Hi Abiam and Allisont,
It was a guy called Mervyn Eden who gave me info on Grenville Arms. I think he's involved with the Burnham Historians and also with the church in Burnham. Phian

Hi Phiam,

Thanks for that will email him.

A word of caution the Moderators on this forum do not like email addresses put on the boards because of spam.  If you go to your post and click on modify you can delete the address and perhaps suggest that if anyone is interested they can send you a private message.   And then you can correspond without email addresses showing up.  If you want to send a PM go to the little face icon on say allisont's post  and you can send a PM with the address.  If you don't remove it the Moderators will if they spot it.

Hope that is helpful,

Abiam

Alisont,
I was just advising Phian about not putting on an email address.  If you look at the bottom of his post you will see he has modified it.  If you want the address of Mervyn Eden send me a PM,

I was interested in the chat some time ago about The Alma and Grenville Arms in Burnham, Bucks. I found out last week that my gt gt grandfather Richard Taylor was shown in the 1881 census as Beerhouse Keeper of the Alma Beerhouse, North End, Burnham, Bucks. Not sure for how long, as he wasn't there in 1871 and died in 1882 aged 70. Does anyone know if there are any old photos of the place or whats there now?

The Bucks CC website has lots of old photos of all parts of the county, although their pics of Burnham are dominated by Burnham Beeches.

I don't recollect any showing old pubs that are no longer there. ( I live only a few hundred yards from the telephone exchange)

I was looking at a Burnham Historians book of old photos of Burnham.

One photo caption, of a parade in 1912, refers to the Alma while anotehr indicates North End to have been the bottom of what it now Dropmore Road. It also refers to some cottages in North End being demolished for the building of Alma Court, This is immediately opposite the Telephone Exchange

This suggests the Alma would have been just behind the Crispin (now the Bee)
