Title: Rodden, Hogan, Burke of Clonfert
Post by: Limgal on Saturday 02 June 07 09:33 BST (UK)
Would be interested in hearing from anyone researching Hogans Dalys Burkes or Roddens of Clonfert parish, Banagher Co Galway.

I can take the Burkes back to Lenamore Clonfert where Mary Burke lives in 1850s. They later lived in Killaltenagh, Banagher. Dalys also lived there.

The Roddens lives in Kilmacshane, Banagher.

The Hogans lived in Kilnaborris.

The above information is from Griffiths Valuations of 1856.

Hello CM Burke,

The 1856 Valuation is your starting point. You may be able to use the Valuation to pinpoint a possible date of death, a family emigrating or even find a living relative as there are other books which unfortunately tend not to be online.

The Valuation of 1848-64 was known as the Primary Valuation. Three notebooks were used.

1. Field Books: Information on the size & quality of a holding
2. House Books: Occupiers name and measurement of any buildings
3. Tenure Books: Annual rent paid and legal basis - whether by lease, or at will, also the year of any lease.

These notebooks also document any changes in occupation between the initial survey and the final published survey.

The valuation office holds the 'Cancelled' / 'Revision' Land Books & Current Land Books.

The 'Cancelled Land Books' and 'Current Land Books', give details of all changes in the holdings, from the time of the Primary Valuation up to the present day.

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for your reply. I`d done a lot of that Griffith`s Valuation research through www.irishorigins.net(subscription needed) Found a lot of 1901 census info on www.leitrim-roscommon.com (yes, lots of East Galway parishes and other parishes in Galway re listed there).

More recently I`ve found records on www.brsgenealogy.com(at a price! €5 per record). Offaly isn`t covered by this site yet and, since that`s where some of my Hogans had strayed I`m hoping this county is listed soon.

Have also followed my Hogans to the US via www.eillisisland.org and Roddens to New Zealand(found excellent links for tracing them through the NZ board on rootschat.

So, in the words of a soon to be former Taoiseach-I`ve a lot done but more to do!

greetings--- i am posting a few years later, but have strong interest in the Burkes and Dalys. I have a great grandfather, Patrick joseph Daly, born in 1880 in Banagher, County Galway, to a John Daly and Bridget Faragher. Looking for more inf on them (as in ancestors of John and Bridget.

I also come to understand that at the Daly farm on Banagher Rd that a Jim Burke came to live there (from Kilconly), because he married an "adopted" child of the Daly's (i think the name was "Una McGach"--- i have a feeling i am really messing up the name), and lived there as Jim Burke-Daly.

does this ring any bells for you? Is there a link between our info?

Many thanks,

Steve
