Has anyone any info on the above. On 1901 census he was 54 years of age (born Lynn Norfolk). One son John Pollock born Howden around 1880 and a daughter Beatrice born Howden 1894.
I cannot trace a birth of John Pollock in Lynn, Norfolk.
Would appreciate help.

There doesn't appear to be anyone to match this person on the 1851 Norfolk index.
Have you tried all the other census to see if the information stays the same?

Welcome to Rootschat!
I'm struggling to find John Pollock in any other census. Something not right somewhere.
I'd be very tempted to splash out on a birth certificate for either John or Beatrice to be certain of their father's name, and mother's name would help too. Do you have any further details on John apart from the 1901 census?

I am amazed by your quick response which is very encouraging for me. I will take on board what you say and will find out when John or Beatrice were born and apply for a birth certificate. I will also checking the 1891 census and back.

We have received birth certs. for both Beatrice and John Pollock.
Beatrice Pollock was born Howden on 13 Sept 1893 - her mother was Faithful Pollock who was a domestic servant. No mention of father. However on looking at the 1881 census for Gilberdyke/Howden, I notice that Faithful (age 12) is down as daughter of Samuel Pollock born Ireland and wife Laura born in Downham, Norfolk. They also had a son John Pollock born Gilberdyke who was age 2. Interesting in that we are stuck on finding a John Pollock born abt 1847 Lynn, Norfolk. Even more confusing is that Samuel was born in Ireland but was obviously around the Norfolk area - wonder if both families are connected in some way
John Pollock born Howden 1879: This has also turned out to be the wrong John Pollock. This birth certificate shows Samuel Pollock being the father (as above).
So it is back for me to the Register Office in Beverley to check if they have a birth for John Pollock born 1879/80 whose father is John Pollock Snr. On the 1901 census for Sculcoates, Kingston upon Hull, John Pollock age 54 (born in Lynn) is a widow with son John age 21 and a daughter Beatrice age 7 both born Howden. I am wondering if this Beatrice is actually one and the same Beatrice mentioned above, where the father's name is omitted from the certificate.

Just back from 2 wks away. That 1901 census shows John as married, not a widower. Will recheck census and see if Faithful can be found somewhere.
Sorry you think you may have got the wrong certs, although it is a puzzling family and I wouldn't discount anything. I could only see one other Beatrice Pollock, b. 1889 and died 1890. Wonder if she was from the same family and the 1893 Beatrice was named after her. Big age gap between John & Beatrice a bit puzzling.
I saw a marriage for Faithful Pollock to John W. Johnson, March Qu 1899 Sculcoates 9d 163 and found them on the 1901 census Sculcoates RG13/4486 fol.161 p.24, no child with them..... ???
Will look for them all in 1891

In 1891 Faithful is Faith Pollock, 22, a domestic servant to William Catterson RG12/3907 fol.112 p.6
Samuel, Sarah (not Laura on this 1891 census) & family with son John aged 11 are in Gilberdyke RG12/3905 fol.30 p.3

I do wonder if this is the same John as the one with Beatrice in 1901, and there's been a mistake with father John's surname.....
will now try to find the father John in 1891, perhaps misindexed somewhere

JOHN POLLOCK BORN 1879 HOWDEN
Beverley Office has contacted us to say that there is no birth certificate registered there in the name of the above. As you say there could be misindexing somewhere along the line.
As you know, his father John Pollock is certainly entered on the census as being born in Lynn, Norfolk. The mystery continues.
I just thought I would let you know and to thank you for your efforts. I feel a bit defeatist about this one - not my usual style! May'be the Samuel Pollock born in Ireland has thrown me somewhat when my concentration has been mainly on Lynn Norfolk.

Don't give up! Maybe the John Pollock birth cert you've got is the right one after all. I've been struggling to find one of my elusive ancestors for almost twenty years, he changed his name a couple of times so he's taken a bit of finding, all I need is his birth now, and I'm sure Ill find him one day.......... ::)
