Hi Quarrywood :)
Fantastic photo! However, it would not be possible for it to be from 1842 because glass-based photographs were not invented until the early 1850s. This one looks like it's from the 1860s at least. Old Rowley would be able to help with a date for it, he knows all about gents' fashion history!
I don't suppose your BONSALLs have any connection to Matlock or Tansley in Derbyshire, do they? That's where mine come from, although back a bit further there is a Nottingham connection.

Thanks for all the reply and help. yes, could be wrong about time.
PRUE M - ] My Wm. Frederick Bonsall was born/ch in 1823 Hyde Lane Cheshire, married Elizabeth Pegg 1841 Hull, to Canada 1846.
I was dating photo by her parents photo they lived there before leaving England.
His parents are Wm. Frederick Bonsall b. 1801 Notts & Elizabeth Litton; g.parents - Wm. F.Bonsall, b.1774 Derby+Julianna Evans. Does that fit yours? ml

Hi Quarrywood,
You have done a good job but you need to scan in
Colour mode not in Grayscale or B&W. I know it sounds daft but a
colour scan picks up far more digital information. Of course if the information
is not there in the first place then it won't make any difference, but yours
would appear to be good. Please try it and let us compare the two.

Hi here is an interpretation for you as it seems to be pixelating quite badly despite the resolution .. I would suggest you follow Tomkins advice and repost a better version for us ... it may be that you have been saving the original too many times. As a jpeg it will lose digital information each time you do that .. Hence the reason we usually alwayd make a duplicate to work on !.
anyway ... I 've made it into a couple of paintings for you .. to add to your collection ;)

"Who Knew" so many would try!!!! -They are all great, I am trying the suggestion of scanning in colour, works!
also thought it was earlier; but ambrotype photos are 1854-60's - it has to be in Ontario, Canada. Thank you all for your quick and time consuming help - ml

Thanks Jim ...there were only 2 colours ..and various tones/shades of browns and greens !!! I'm surprised no one else has coloured it ..... :-\
