Hi all.
I'm looking for the baptism info for George Mew born c1811 Uckfield.
He gives this on census returns 1841-61 & I'd like to find who his parents were.
Thank you in advance
-
Hi
Uckfield parish is not on the IGI as far as I know therefore you may have to get the film and search it at your nearest LDS centre. Another way might be to get his marriage certificate as that will give his father's name. There is a marriage in 1838 on FreeBMD which might be him.

The Sussex OPC site has a partial transcript of Uckfield's Holy Cross Church, 1800 - 1813. George Mew isn't included, but the transcriber's email address is given - he might do a lookup if you ask him.

Hi, sorry to open this one again. I have the same query about George's parentage and wonder if the question was ever resolved? My ancestor is Richard Mew (born about 1814) who i take to be George's brother.
-
Hi,
I have had a look at the SFHG transcripts for Uckfield but neither George nor Richard appear on them. There are other 'Mew' families though.

That's really kind of you, Sean, thanks. Paul.

Having stumbled upon this thread while I was rummaging about in Uckfield ... and just in case it's still an issue.
For what it's worth ...
- There's a "Tingley Spencer" on the same Vol. 7, Page 707 of the Uckfield marriages as George Mew. Date: 1838 Q4
- FamilySearch shows a George Mew marrying a "Hannah Tingley Spencer" in Fletching, Sussex in 1838. Groom's father: Thomas Mew. (Source film# 1067171) "Hannah" would be right, according to the censuses, but I can't vouch for the source, here.
- The SFHG records show a George Mew being buried in Uckfield (Holy Cross) on Nov.1, 1864, at the age of 51 (not _quite_ right, if George wasn't lying about his age)
The baptisms of their five children are easily findable, showing George (the blacksmith) and Hannah as the parents.

Well, Phil, you've done me a great service here - not so much with baptism & marriage but death!!
Checking out FreeBMD Q4 1864 Uckfield drew a blank - because it was transcribed JOHN. Sent in a correction for that, and i'll order the certificate right away.
I've done a load more work on the Sussex Mews since my original post. Anyone wanting a detailed dialogue can contact me on paul AT dbnut DOT com.
Doorwoman: did you get what you wanted? I'm now 99% sure that (your) George & (my) Richard were brothers, sons of Thomas Mew & Sarah Pollard. George's marriage certificate to Hannah confirms father Thomas, Labourer. Can't lay my hands on Richard's marriage cert as he married in Australia.
BTW Phil, there may have been other children to George & Hannah - the "complete" list would run Thomas (1841), Louisa (1843), Jane (1845), George (1848), James (1850), William (1853), Benjamin (1856), Harriet (1859). EXCEPT the last 3 contradict my reading that mother Hannah died in 1852. Oh Dear! More certificates needed.

I suppose that would pretty well let Hannah off the hook for Willie, Ben & Harriet.

And in case you don't have them (but you probably do) ...
- Willie's Uckfield birth record (1853 Q3) is in Volume 2b, Page 90.
- Harriet's Uckfield birth record (1859 Q1) is in Volume 2b, Page 106.
I didn't see any parish records for them.

Thanks, Omega! Confirms the GRO index for Harriet's death in Q1 1852.
As for Benjamin, that's Hannah's husband OK, he must have taken up with a Mary pretty soon after Hannah's death (no sign of a marriage).
Thanks, Phil, for the references, i've now ordered all 3 birth certs.

There's a Mary Field in the 1851 census, born Mayfield, possibly age 20, in Uckfield Workhouse with daughter Caroline age 2 (b. Q1 1848 Uckfield 7 526). Hard to place Mary in 1841 census. Can't see a baptism on IGI.
-
Seems baby Caroline could have died q1 1853, just before her mother married.
-
Possibly found a Baptisum for Mary
At Mayfield,11 Mar 1823,daughter of James & Hannah.
Caroline Field,3 May 1848 daughter of Mary Field, Union House,Uckfield
Mary Ann Field,22 Jan 1845,daughter of Mary a Single woman,Union House,Uckfield.

Thanks ever so much. Seems like Mary Ann also died (Q1 1849), again about 4. What a dreadful story.

After all that success last week, i'll chance my luck with another (big) question) :)
The Little Horsted Mews became the main Sussex heartland (260 descendants, 170 with surname Mew).
It seems to me the Little Horsted bunch came from Framfield but i've got no proof..... :-*
-
P.S. for any who may be interested, my reconstruction of Sussex Mews appears at:

To add a bit to Mary Field's story ...
A John Field was born to Mary Field of Five Ashes (no husband.)
He was baptised at Hadlow Down St Mark on 23 Jul 1843.
It would seem that Mary had moved to Uckfield by the time young John was buried at Holy Cross on 29 Dec 1843.
And as mentioned before, her next two were born while she was living at Union House in Uckfield and were buried at ages 4 and 5 at Holy Cross.
Phil
-
... and to pile a little more innuendo on poor Mary ...
In 1841:
There was a seemingly single Mary Field (age betw. 15 and 19) living with families of Streeters and Frys in Buxted. No other Fields in the household.
Also in Buxted, there was a 3-year-old Mary Field living with a family of Bennetts — no other Fields.
I couldn't find any other Fields at all in Buxted in 1841. (Although, oddly, there is Mary Fielder living with a family of Brays.)
________________
(Added later)
We may be able to let our Mary of the hook for 3-year-old Mary in Buxted. There's a baptism for Mary Charlotte Field in Buxted St Margaret on May 27 1838, with a Charlotte Field as mother (and no father.) There was a young (20-24) Charlotte Field in Uckfield at the time and another (22 yrs) in Rotherfield.
(For what it's worth.)

Phil, that's really useful, thanks for all your work.
Hadlow Down, interestingly, is half-way between Mayfield (where Mary was born) and Uckfield where she spent most of the rest of her short life.
I will probably stump up for her death certificate at some point, as well as that for her youngest daughter Harriet Mew whose death is registered in the same quarter.
What a life! 3 children by an unknown partner - all died by the age of 5. 3 children by George Mew - 2 died by the age of 2 and one other (Benjamin) in the workhouse at 15 and then disappears without a death registration that i've ever discovered.
From the regular intervals between the first 3 births, she probably had a steady guy. Wonder what made him give up on her (if indeed it was his initiative). Would be interesting to see if they figure in newspapers, courts or parish relief.
Do you have a particular interest in the Mews, Phil?
Paul
P.S. I'm going through the Little Horsted descendants, picking up any holes with a view to directed research. For example there are only 4 Uckfield civil registrations I can't place in the tree and i'll be getting certificates for these. And one death registration i managed to use for two Thomases! Plenty of cases where i'll be looking for baptisms and burials.
-
Actually, Paul, I haven't run into any Mews in my family jungle, yet. But I'm heavily into the Uckfield-Maresfield area (Harvey and Yeomans), so your Uckfield query caught my eye. Since I had some tools and an interest in the area, I thought I'd toss in any tidbits I could find. Others are always so quick to help, I'd like to do so when I can. And I like a puzzle as much as the next person!
Happy hunting!

Well that's very generous, Phil. Good luck with your projects, too!

Ah ... if you want to see generosity, look at the folks here with many hundreds — thousands, even — of posts. For the most part, they're not *asking* many questions!
