Thanks TT and Jim.
But I would lik to pin down the year then I might be able to put names to the people on the pics. They were my grandmother's family who as you can see had a nursery in Strood Kent. There is a booklet on the nursery and it said they sold plants and flowers to Charles Dickens who lived in the area at Gads Hill Place in Higham.
TT its good that I am a Corrie fan too and I know about Richard Hillman,I lived in Bolton before moving to Perth Australia and I do have UK TV on my Foxtel the same as your Sky .
By the way I think one of the men on photos is my greatgrandfather-Richard Illman!
Regards Jean.

Jean,
Try contacting the nearest library in Strood , maybe they have some local history for the place. You never know your luck.

Hello Jean,
Wonderful photos you have there! You do know that the first one is actually a stereo view, don't you? If you're like me, you can get the 3-D / stereo effect by looking at the photos and going cross-eyed, but they were designed to be put into a special stereo card viewer.
It's difficult to date the first photo, but the second one looks about 1910-1915 or so judging by the little girl's dress and hat. The first pic could be around that same time.
Cheers :)

Hi Prue.
Yes I did know that they were 3/D pics.I have a set of cards and I did have a viewer, but that has been lost.
My grandmother gave me the cards when I was young.I found them years later in my Dad's shed!
Only afew were of family, the rest are views of the Medway towns.
Thanks everyone for their help.

Hello Jean
I am currently researching Victorian Nurseries which specialised in selling Ferns as a project for the British Pteridological (Fern) Society and have come across a number of reference for the nursery in Strood. Starting which Josiah Illman 1855 - c. 1870, then S. Illman from 1871, followed by Richard from 1877. My dates are from trade adverts and articles so the exact crossover between family member is not precise. The nursery appears to have issued a number of catalogues and lists of ferns during the period. So far I have found no trace or record that these still exist so I was interested in your mention of a booklet on the nursery. Is that something you have a copy of ? I'm happy to share the information I have found so far if that is of interest.
kind regards
Mark

Hi Mark.
Yes that’s my GG grandfather Josiah Illman!
If my memory is correct I gave it to my dear dad who died in December 2013 aged 96.
He was very interested in the nursery as it was owned by his mother’s family.
He was still gardening and fell in his garden before his death.
Unfortunately I didn’t sort out his home as I live in Perth Australia along way from Strood.
I did research Charles Dickens letters where Josiah is mention!
Dickens was buying ferns for his home Gads Hill Place which was very near to my childhood home!
Yes I would love any information you have.
Kind regards from Perth,Jean.

Mark
-
Mark, I don’t think the pm system will be working for you yet as you have only made 2 posts. Make another post and then it should be fine.
-
Mark sent you a PM message.
As didn’t receive your messages.
-
As Richard died in 1923 and you think he is one of people in photo I think I would say circa 1910
-
Yes that’s right!
Richard was my Greatgrandfather born Strood Kent 1848.
