Title: COMPLETE Parish Records Look up for Holme upon Spalding Moor
Post by: Carole Bloomfield on Sunday 27 May 07 22:40 BST (UK)
I am trying to trace all the family of Elizabeth and John Holt. They were married in 1782 in Holme upon Spalding Moor.
I have put every possible name I could think of on the IGI and found the following:
Robert 1784
Ruth 1787
William 1789
Elisabeth 1790
Sophia 1792
Swithin 1794 ( my x4 grandfather)

Could I possibly have missed any?
Any help greatly appreciated
Regards
Carole

Hi Carole,

Did you know that you can find the siblings baptised in the same parish on Family Search. Once you've found a record e.g. Swithin in 1794, you can then click on the Batch No. at the bottom of the page (in this case C012083). On the resulting screen, just fill in the surname and the parents' names ( or just the father's name as the parish clerk didn't always record the mother's name) and it should come up with the whole family in this particular parish.

This time, it's come up with a few extras (they're all children of John & Elizabeth Holt):

Ruth 1787
Esther 1796
Martin & Ann 1798
Tamar 1800

Sorry if this is telling you something you already know!

Hi Jill
Thanks for that info, I didn't know you could do that, but of course I didn't know how to use the batch numbers. I had found Elizabeth and John and just kept guessing names of the children and found six, I suppose I was lucky but it was all a bit time consuming.
Thanks very much for replying

Hi Sue
I did as you suggested and found 10 children for John and Elizabeth which was fantastic. I then decided to put the father John in with an approx date and up came another John so I clicked on the Batch No and it gave the christening as 1770, which would make John only 12 yrs old when he married Elizabeth! Unless of course he was much older when he was christened.
Any thoughts on the subject?
Am I doing something wrong?
Regards
Carole

That's alright, Fred, it happens to us all!

Yes, I noticed that John baptised in 1770 with a brother Richard (1772) both s/o John. He certainly couldn't have married at age 12, so it's either a late baptism or the wrong John!

I'm not sure if a fiche of the Holme on Spalding Moor parish records is available at the East Riding Records Office - some of the parishes nearer York are actually held by the Borthwick Institute in York - but, if they are at ERY, I'll check for you next time I go. I'm afraid it won't be this week though - probably next.

If it was a late baptism, it might just say how old John was in the records.

Thanks Jill
That would be wonderful if you could look that up for me. I live in Sheffield, so a bit too far for me to travel in my old car!!
You have opened a whole new window for me now and I can do the same thing on the rest of my tree. What it must be like to be brainy!!
Thanks once again, I really appreciate your help.

Carole, another thing you can do on IGI is just put the parents' names in (eg "John Holt" and "Elizabeth"), plus region, country and county and any date parameters, and it will come up with all children of couples by that name in the county in that date range.  The advantage of this is that you can get children of the same couple who are in different batches.  The disadvantage is that it's a much broader net so that with more common names you'll get a lot of irrelevant results.

NB you can only specify region, country, county and dates if you're searching under the IGI tab of the advanced search page - on "All Resources" you can specify parents but can't narrow down geographically or chronologically.

Hi Carole,

I checked this out at the East Riding Records Office today.

As I thought, the Holme on Spalding Moor parish records are held at the Borthwick Institute.

The ER office had a microfilm of the Bishops Transcripts. I took a look but, strangely, couldn't find either John Holt in 1770 or Richard in 1772.

I don't really understand this - I see the IGI has both baptisms and that the source is the Bishops Transcripts!! Either the film I looked at wasn't complete, or I missed it - and I don't think I did!!

I think you'd be best going through the Borthwick Institute. Their website is:

www.york.ac.uk/inst/bihr

Good luck.

Hi Jill
Thanks so much for all the trouble you have gone to, there are not many left like you!!!

It is strange like you say that the IGI records came from there but you couldn't find them - maybe they have been borrowed or filed in the wrong place!! Is that possible? I don't know as I have never been involved with anything like that.
I am going on the website that you sent me and will keep you informed of any development. Thanks once again
Regards

Hi Alison, Thanks for getting in touch. I haven't worked on my tree for a couple of years now, I thought I had gone far enough. If there is anything I can help you with just let me know.I have just been looking through my files and found Martin and his descendants until 1908.
My tree is on Genes Reunited but I stopped using them and it costs quite a bit to get back on so I have to rely on my written files.

Hi Carole,
I haven't been able to find the marriage for Swithin Holt & Jane.  Was her name Jane Burton?
Do you know what became of Swithin & Martin's brothers, Robert b.1784 & William b.1789?  Also his half brothers, John b.1770 & Richard b.1772?
Martin's eldest son William, came to Australia with his wife Ann Cook in 1853.  Do you want their family?
Don't suppose you have done a DNA test?
Sorry for all the questions.  I'm loving this & have a lot of gaps to fill in.

Hi Alison
I have just had a quick look at my files, but there is so much to look through, it will take time and as I haven't a scaneer I will have to try taking photos wih my phone or type them out and print them. Things are a bit hectic at the moment, coming up to Xmas but I will do what I can.
I have Swithin's partner as Jane Holderness, I have a photo of their gravestone. There is no record of them being married, but it does say she is his wie on the stone.
Give me time and I will find something for you I hope!!
