Title: Lookup for hughes in 1851 Staffordshire
Post by: ali607 on Sunday 05 December 04 22:05 GMT (UK)
Hi, im looking for the parents of a Mary Ann hughes b. 1847 in Oldbury, Staffordshire.
Hence she would have been 3 or 4yrs old...
Someone has recommended that i look her up in 1851. He said: "Oldbury is also included in the 1851 census of Staffordshire (HO107/2024) and the 1851 census has been indexed by surname so it's much easier to find people on it." Is that number the piece/folio number?

Anyway, heres some extra details about her later in life - dont know if theyre useful - sorry its long, i just thought the more info the better1
Mary Ann Hughes b.1874 Oldbury, Staffs, married John Fulford b.1874 White Heath, Staffs - this ive identified as a small village now engulfed by Birmingham - nextdoor to Oldbury. The two obviously met down there but then they moved to Darfield, West Riding - presumably cos John was a coal miner and at this time there were lots of pits around South Yorkshire.
Presuming that the earliest they met was at the age of about 18 i figured that the earliest they moved to Yorkshire was about 1865....and the latest was about 1871/2 since they had their first son Peter in Darfield in 1872. So ive narrowed it down quite a lot but theres still a little grey area where i dont know which county they were in - 1865-1872. If i had to guess i would say they were more likely to be in Darfield, West Riding in 1971 though...Somebody has looked the Fulford's up for me in 71 in Staffs and the John Fulford im looking for isnt there so I would say he was in West Riding by this time...
Given all that i would say they definitely married in the late 1860s/71/72, but i dont know whether they got married in Yorkshire or Staffs.
All children (Peter, Deborah, James William, Clara, john Thomas, Susannah, Sarah and Mary) were born around various villages around West Riding near Rotherham. They were not very wealthy and  ive found them to be lodging with other coal mining families.
Hope thats useful - again, sorry its long
thanks very much for your help!
Alison

Hi there, I notice you have an interest in the Pearson family in Oldbury, Staffordshire around 1851 who were coal dealers.
I am related to the Pearson coal dealing family, and wondered if we have a connection?
I would be pleased to hear from you

Many thanks

Lesley
