Hi Sally,

Welcome to Rootschat,

Do you know this chap:
Ian Hilder
23a Grantham Bank, Barcombe
LEWES East Sussex
BN8 5DJ

He is a genealogist, member of AGRA, and he advertises on the web and in Family Tree Magazine.  He may well be a good starting point! Google his name to come up with further details.

Nell

Hi Sally,
There are 227 marriages on the Sussex marriage index for the name of HILDER, between 1547-1840, mostly in East Sussex, notably in MOUNTFIELD, 35 marriages.
Let me know if you want something specific,
Jane

Hi Sally,

Only been with Rootschat, since November, and have found it amazing - I am also researching the Hilder family name, as it is my mother in law's maiden name - Ian Hilder has given me some help, and I have filled in some gaps for him as well - perhaps we can help each other - my mother in law is
Dorothy Hilder, daughter of Bertram and Ellen, Bertram, was the son of
Lazarus and Charlotte Hilder - are any of these names familiar to you ?

kind regards
sandra  :)

Hi,
There is a baptism in Mountfield 25 April 1841, Harriet daughter of James and Anne.  However you have not given us much detail of her place of birth from census records records etc.    Do you have a marriage certificate to confirm James as her father?    His occupation might help find the family in early census records.
James married Ann Sellens 25 Dec 1834 as stated earlier.

The surname Hilder is registered with the Guild as a one-name study. You may want to contact Ian for more information on individuals.

Looking for Abraham Reed on Ancestry brings up lots of information.  The 1891 census gives Harriet's place of birth as Robertsbridge and her age as 43.  However in 1881 her age is 40 and Abraham is 33 so maybe she knocked a few years off later?  That would just about tie in the the baptism date you have.

so cant really go by the census's if that is the case however being a widow before marrying Abraham would surely make her older than him perhps she disliked being the elder
but no definitive answer

Ok i have found 1851 census for a Harriet Hilder [age not plain on original Census] but on printout it says 11 also on printout POB says Strantfield but on original i see it as Mountfield Sussex father is James Hilder age 40 born Seddlescome Sussex but mother is Mary Anne Hilder [so maybe for her marriage she changed the names around] age not clear but born Mountfield i think this is probably what i am looking for
