Title: COGDON 1871, 1891
Post by: Lindyloowho on Saturday 26 May 07 03:09 BST (UK)
Hi:

Can anyone find John A. COGDON b 1826, Sunderland, plumber with wife Mary in 1871 census?  Children were William 1859, Sarah 1862, Elizabeth 1867, John 1870 and Edmund 1872, all born Sunderland.  I have them in 1881 at Crow Tree Road, Bishopwearmouth. Mary died in 1878.

Can I also ask for a lookup in 1891?  John died in 1894.

Thank you, Linda

Thank you very much for that!  I was surprised to find Edmund in the army - he goes on to marry into my Nicholson family and is a gas stoker by trade.

Any chance of finding them in 1871?

Linda

Hi,

I strongly suspect the relevant pages are missing on the 1871 census on Ancestry.   As they hadn`t moved house from 1861 to the 1881 I would expect to find them still at 3 Crow Trees Ter.   However, Piece 5005 starts at Folio 7 page 7 with a schedule number of 32 and half a household at the top of the page.  This means there are 31 households missing on what I suspect is Crow Trees (looking at the enumerator routes for the 61 and 81).

Perhaps a plea to someone who has the discs or access to an alternative site may have more success.

Regards,
Mo

1871
RG10/5005 folio 4 page 2, folio 5 page 3.  John Codgon and William Cogdon families.

There are more children than you listed.  As best as I can read (the enumerator did not make high marks in penmanship) Frances age 19, Isabella 17, David 15, T?or M (female) 14, William 11, sarah 9, Eleanor 6, Mary 6, Elizabeth 3, John 1

I have sent you a personal message.

Many thanks for everyones help.  I see what you mean about the enumerators writing  ???

It's also posed an issue - Mary Towers and John Cogdon married in 1856 - however eldest daughter Frances was born 1852.  I suspect this must have been a second marriage ;D
