Hi Is there anyone who would be willing to look for a Robert Welsh Bissett Russell born c1877 in Glasgow. He married a Margaret Hamilton 8th Dec 1911, in Tollcross Shettleston. I now know his parents were Janet Robertson (Robson) & Joseph Russell (an Iron turner). Janet was born around 1841 in Glasgow, her mother's name was Catherine Robertson born around 1808 Glasgow, Father unknown. In 1891 Census they were living at 338 Duke Street Camlachie. I would be grateful for any assistance. :-\

I have Robert marrying Margaret Hamilton on 11 Dec 1911 at Shettleston Glasgow. His father on the marriage certificate was Joseph Russell & his mother Janet Robson/Robertson. I located Janet Robson/Robertson on 1891 Census (338 Duke Street Camlachie) with son Robert age 13, Mother Catherine Robson/Robertson & daughter Catherine. Robert then must have been born 1877/78 Glasgow. So far I have been unable to locate his birth. Janet was born around 1841 in Glasgow, her mother's name was Catherine Robson/Robertson nee ? born around 1808 Glasgow, Father unknown Robson/Robertson. I would be grateful for any assistance Regards Pauline

Hiya guys,
I've a few threads here which might assist us.

I'd like to know whether Robert was a railway guard as mentioned on the Curious Fox site or was he
a Regimental Sergeant Major in the Irish Guards as mentioned on the Dublin board. I'm also wondering
why, since Margaret may have worked at Kilkenny Castle, the message was posted on the Dublin board.
Pauline, post a message on the Armed Forces board and see if any of the regular posters there are able to assist. I've a couple of online friends on Belfast Forum ... one is an ex Mick and the other specialises in military matters. I could PM them to see if they can assist in finding out more about Robert being a RSM in the Irish Guards. When he retired from the Micks did he become a railway guard?

Certainly in 1911 he was a Railway guard but in 1924 when he went to Ireland he was a RSM in the Irish Guards (although I no proof of this). His wife Margaret worked at Kilkenny Castle. I have their marriage in Shettleston in 1911. Margaret & Robert had three sons, & a daughter, & although the daughter who incidently is 85, & has her wits about her, isnt very cooperative. The sons I cannot find, although I am working on born between 1911-1921, Robert, William & name possible Hubert or Hugh. Margaret's family I have managed to trace, but not Roberts.
I know his parents were Janet Robertson (Robson) & Joseph Russell (an Iron turner). Janet was born around 1841 in Glasgow, Janet's mother's name was Catherine Robertson born around 1808 Glasgow, Father unknown. In 1891 Census they were living at 338 Duke Street Camlachie. I would be grateful for any assistance. Regards Pauline

Hi Joe,
Thank you for that info. I have Joseph Russell as a Iron Turner, his wife was Janet Robertson who on 1891 Census was a widow, age 50. She was living with her son Robert Russell & Daughter Catherine, & mother Catherine Robertson nee Munro. Janet had three siblings, David born 1848/49, Ann Mackie Robertson b 29th Jan 1838 Glasgow & Peter b 27th Feb 1846 Barony. Certainly on the 1861 Census David & Peter were Engineers. I dont have an awful lot on Joseph really! But thanks so much for what you have given me. Regards Pauline :-*
