1891
RG12/1887 19 14

Gilbert Grant, son, s, 20, Agricultural Labourer, b. Edington
Wallace Norris, cousin, mar, 23, Agricultural labourer, b. do.
Eliz Norris, cousin, mar, 25, b. Shapwick

I can see a marriage Wallace Norris - Eliza Norris in March quarter 1891, Bristol, but I can't see a matching Eliza Norris earlier. Maybe he was widowed? (Or it's just not the right marriage)

Dear Sue

My husband’s Grandmother was Mary Whitcombe and she was born in Meare. There are dozens of Whitcombe, Witcombe and various spellings through out the villages and as I live close to the records office in Taunton they were a challenge for me!

6     Joseph Witcombe was baptised at Shapwick 13 Feb 1829. He married Jane Hucker in the Bridgwater Reg Dist between April and July 1855. I would imagine that they married in Shapwick as this was where they both came from. Jane's parents were Henry Hucker a farm labourer born abt 1806 and Maria born abt 1810  (from the 1851 census) both at Othery.

Joseph, Jane and family were living at St Anns Logde Burnham on Sea in 1861, Joseph was a labourer/gardner. By 1871 they were back at Shapwick. They had the following children…

Mary Ann Witcombe baptised at Shapwick 4 May 1856

George Witcombe baptised at Shapwich 23 May 1858, although the census do give his place of birth as Burnham

Charlotte aged 1 month at the time of the 1861 census, born at Burnham

Albert b 1863 at Shapwick, his death was registered in the Bristol Reg Dist 1902

Eliza b 1866 Shapwick

William b 1867 Shapwick

Anna Maria born June Q 1870 died March Q 1874

Elizabeth b 1873 Shapwick

Joseph Witcombe was buried at Shapwick 27 Feb 1892.

5     Joseph was the son of James Witcombe born in Shapwick abt 1801 and died in 1879. He married Charlotte Davis at Shapwich 15 April 1828. She died in 1848

Children…all born at Shapwick
Elizabeth 1834
William b 1836
Sophie bp 31 July 1841
Maria bp 22 Jan 1843
James bp 19 April 1846

4   James was the son of James Witcombe and Mary Young

Groom James Witcomb status – of otp, – Bride Mary Young status – of otp, – married on 23 Oct 1786 at parish Shapwick by banns

3   James Witcombe was the son of James Witcombe born abt 1764 and Mary Dowden

2   James was the son of John Witcombe b 1741 and died 1769, his wife was Betty unknown

1             John was the son of John Witcombe who died at Compton Dundon in 1765

Most of the earlier records were researched by Steve Whitcombe who my husband was at school with. The baptism dates come from the parish records. The family came from Compton Dundon as far as we have gone back. Many of them are on my family tree on Ancestry.com. Hope this makes sense!

There is a group for the Witcombe family at

 http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/witcombe/

Best wishes Heather

ps Sorry if you have received this twice, not sure if you receive a thread from a completed look up!

Post by: DentFamilyTree on Thursday 08 January 09 17:20 GMT (UK)
Ancesctry.com has a Witcomb/Haines tree posted.  I am very interested in contacting the author.  I am a descenant of Randolph Witcomb and a 2nd cousin once removed of Joan (I think) Haines.

I would be happy to supply some old Witcomb photos and would like to learn as much about the tree as possible.

what a ninny

James children will have Norris surname and mmn as Moxey so they probably dont belong to him
but they could belong to

Allan Moxey who m. Lucy Ann Norris Jun 1901  Bridgwater  5c 615

all the other moxey / norris marriages were female moxeys and male norris thus having children with a norris surname

still thinking about Ann i wonder if she died - just checking out deaths now
but maybe she had gone abroad havent checked that option.
if the marriage found was correct maybe her husband died and she remarried

no relevant deaths under Ann* Giblett 1885-1900
or Ann* COx (i phoentic searched surnames too)
same period
not the right age or right area - although she could have lived anywhere
again none for Ann* Norris (phoentic search surname) of the right age even allowing for a few years no matches

Hi, don't know if this from my own tree is any help;-
Henry Hucker, bapt 18 May 1806, Othery, wed Maria Porter, 1809-21 Jan 1897.
Marriage at Middlezoy on 4 Apr 1781. Henry's parents were Oram Hucker, 12 May
1775, Othery, - 12 Nov 1854, Othery, and Ellen Perratt, 1773 - 1853, Middlezoy.
Oram and Ellen wed at Othery, 31 Aug 1795. Oram's parents were George Hucker,
8 Dec 1732 - 7 Dec 1792, of Othery, and Martha Keirle, 1734, Stoke St. Gregory -
4 Nov 1791, Othery. George and Martha wed at Othery on 23 Mar 1755. Martha's
parents were Arthur Keirle and Joan Small. Georges parents were Oram Hucker and
Elizabeth Lee.

Johns wife Sarah died and he remarried Hannah Martin, i dont think Martin was her maiden  name i think she was married to a Mr Martin as she has a son with the Martin surname have a look at the 1861 census ref i gave for Louisa and then the 1871

of course Hannah may have had her son out of wedlock in which case she was nee Martin

ramble ramble ramble

I'm such a idiot sometimes i was looking for Louisa Martin when in fact her husband was Martin MAIDMENT - i got confused becuase f Hannah Martin .

so Louisa in

Hi All, I'm new here so I'm not sure if you already have this information.  Someone on this board asked what happened to William.  William Norris and his son Henry J. were on the ship, Etruria and they landed in NY on 21 March 1892.  They lived in Sennett, N.Y.  Henry brought his family  with him. His wife died in England around the time their last child was born.  Henry's children were Anna and Bessie (twins) Norris b: 9 Jan 1889 and Mary Ann b: 1891.  When they reached New York, Mary Ann was either given to or adopted by Charles and Harriett Pitman of Elbridge, NY.  While checking info on ancestry, I found a Pitman family in Edington. I'm trying to find if the Pitman's were related to the Norris family.

Henry remarried in New York.  The only info I can find on his wife is that she was born in England and her name was Anna B. b: 31 Dec 1861.  Henry and Anna had three boys: Harold J. b: 8 July 1895; Lester W b: 28 May 1896 and George H b: 19 Dec 1899.  We have not been able to locate the death records on William, Henry J. or Anna.  I do have info on the children is anyone is interested.

Title: Re: Can anyone help me
Post by: EmeraldHope on Sunday 14 June 09 17:01 BST (UK)
Hi Sue, Thanks for the warm welcome.  I'm trying to tie in three different Norris families.  I'm doing research for myself and two others.  I found some info today and wonder if it rings a bell with anyone on this board?

Henry J. Norris b: 5/1866 in Edington, Burtle and his father William b: 1837 are from a friends family.  It looks like William's father might have been a George b: 1792 in Edington d: 1868 in Edington.  If ancestry.com is correct then George's father was a Matthew b: 1755 and died 1834 in Edington or in that area.

I'm pretty sure in my last note I wrote that William was married to Sarah Cox and she died right after the birth of Stephen.  The Norris', the Cox's and the Pitman's keep coming up but other than Sarah's marriage to William, I can't tie the families together.  I am sure Henry, William's son,  didn't just get off the boat and hand Mary Ann to strangers.  The Pitman's were from Bridgwater and both of the other families have records that show they were either born there, married in that town or moved between Edington and Bridgwater.          Dottie/Emerald

Post by: jamajo on Sunday 14 June 09 20:42 BST (UK)

Well this is interesting :o..... Hope this makes sense ;D

My grandfather was Arthur James Norris b 1902 in Huntspill, Somerset.
His father was a Wallace Norris b abt 1868 in Edington Burtle, Somerset and he married Eliza Whitcombe in 1891 in Bristol
Wallace's parents were Albert Norris b abt 1844 in Edington and he married Sarah Ann Gullidge in
1865 in Bridgewater.
Alberts parents i am unsure about at this time.

After getting all my paperwork out i find i have got William Norris b abt 1839 married to Sarah Cox in Jun 1861 in Bridgewater. They had 3 children, Walter W b abt 1863, Henry J b abt 1867 and Stephen b abt 1869. Sarah died in Jun 1870 age 35.
I have Williams parents as John Norris b abt 1811 and he married a Sarah ?

Dont know if this helps or if you can fill any gaps for me . I do have some children for the above families so things looking good i think :) If i can help let me know ;)

Lesanne like i said has also got Norris in her tree and we have been trying to tie our families together.
She also has Cox  but not sure about Pitman.... Im sure she will answer this ;D ;D ;D

Hello Toni,
Yes.. Sue and I have been working on her family for months.
There's a John Norris Lawrence... c 1811. Edington. mother Mary Lawrence.

Now there's a John Norris (Yeoman.. what else.. !! lol) marrying Betty Blake 16 April 1822.
In 1841 he is with Betty, we are looking for poss links with John c1811.
