Title: Tedfords Donaghadee/Belfast
Post by: mandrake on Sunday 20 May 07 21:07 BST (UK)
I am researching my Tedford connection from Ballyhackamore/Strandtown and have a hunch that they might be related  in some way to James Tedford Ship Chandlers, who I know originated in Donaghadee before moving to Belfast.  Am desperate to find someone who has some info on them so that I know which route to take.  Anyone any Tedford links?  ???

Hiya mandrake,

I've posted links to your threads. These should simplify matters for other members who may be able to assist in the search. It's easy enough to post an answer on one thread only to come across another thread related to the same query which has no reply. I've done this myself on more than a few occasions and have wondered .. "Hey, what's going on here? I'm sure I've already posted a reply to this somewhere."

Ros Davies' Co. Down Ireland Genealogy Research Site shows three people named Tedford in Donaghadee.

1843  Robert ... merchant and shipowner
1846) Mary ... grocer at New Street
1852)
Capt James ... father of David Lowry Tedford who d. 21 Sep 1838 aged 2; buried Killinchy graveyard ... there may be a Killinchy connection. Donaghadee to Killinchy was a reasonable distance to travel to bury a person in 1838.

Thanks Chris! I'm trying to build up a tree of all the Tedfords in the vain hope that one day I might make the connection (if it exists!). I really appreciate your help!  ;D

I'm not sure if you've seen this one Mandy.

The BBC YP&M  History from Headstones  (http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/yourplaceandmine/down/donaghadee_graves.shtml) page mentions James Tedford's grave in Donaghadee. The question that springs to my mind is why is his son buried in Killinchy and he's buried in Donaghadee. Maybe his wife came from Killinchy ... we need to find her name and where she's buried.

At the rear door of the church is found the grave of James Tedford, famous for his dockside chandlery in Belfast. Tedford actually began his business as a sea Captain in Donaghadee in the 1830s, expanding in 1851 into the Belfast premises.

James would have been born in either the late 1700s or early 1800s. We don't know how many children were in his family so can't put a precise date on his marriage although David's death in 1838 gives us a rough guide.

I see his son was David LOWRY Tedford. I also have a Wills extract for a Margaret LOWRY Tedford (spinster) who died in 1900 and left her money (£427.18s) to William FCS Corry and his wife Jane (nee Tedford) - a sister perhaps? James Tedford himself left £6,416 when he died in 1893 - some money in those days! The executor was a James Tedford (son perhaps?) I suppose its almost a cert that James Tedford's wife was a Lowry. The plot thickens!

Hiya Mandy,

You're right. James Tedford must have married a Lowry.
You've got me interested. Who was William F. C. S. Corry ???

I've been wondering about the burial in Killinchy. The railway didn't reach Donaghadee until 1861 which means taking the child's by boat to a point near Killinchy and then using a horse and cart or going from Donaghadee
to Killinchy by horse and cart.

The will states Wm Corry was an 'Aerated Water Manufacturer'. It also states that James Tedford was living in Wellington Park when he died and Margaret Lowry Tedford was formerly of Chatsworth, Malone Road and late of Glenbrook, Bangor. Your input on the Co Down geography is interesting - I dont know that part of the country well at all - I'm Co Antrim born and bred! Just for the record, my mum (daughter of Sarah Tedford who is a daughter of the William Tedford posting establishment Strandtown) says that when she was young she remembers her mother telling her that the Tedford Ship Chandlers were related but I have to take this lightly as it may have been wishful thinking!!

I've got all het up about the Corry's now - its interesting even if there is no connection. If you look at Mary Lennons street directories they started out in Victoria Street manufacturing water from the Cromac Spring and also made and exported 'Belfast Ginger Ale'. They moved to Cromac Street before 1880 and by 1907 were 114-126 Cromac Street. Wm Corry is mentioned in the obits at the start of the 1907 directory.

There's a good map of the relevent part of Co. Down on the  Dundonald Railway Station, Then and Now… site.  (http://dundonaldrail.users.btopenworld.com/bcdr.htm) Unfortunately Killinchy isn't shown, however Saintfield is shown. Go in a straight line towards the Lough from Saintfield and you'll see two islands. Killinchy is above the "c" in the word "Junc" A steep hill runs from Killinchy village towards those islands.

There's a short paragraph about Mr W. F. C. Corry on the Glenravel Local History Project ... Belfast Timeline.  (http://www.glenravel.com/downloads/www.glenravel.com/Belfast%20Timeline/Belfast%20Timeline%201880s.pdf)

In the 1880s Belfast Corporation summoned Mr W. F. C. S. Corry, aerated water manufacturer, Cromac Street, for having allowed a number of houses in McAuley Street and McAuley Court to fall into a poor sanitary condition. He was ordered to demolish the properties or repair them.

Margaret Lowry Tedford and Jane Tedford ... you need to find their parents and whether they had any siblings.

Hi,

I am the great-granddaughter of a James Tedford that was born in Belfast in 1846.  My sister and I have been trying for a number of years to find out what Tedford family in Belfast he is related to.  After reading through some of these chat messages, I can see some errors in some of the relationships I think.  Perhaps I am missing something but James Tedford (of Chandlrey fame) is buried with his wife Margaret in the Donaghadee graveyard.  She died in 1864 and he died in 1867.  I am not sure who the Margaret Lowry Tedford that died in 1900 is.

Would really like to chat with you on this.

Hi Elizabetherin!
Was really pleased to see your post. Maybe at last someone can shed some light on this for me! You have probably gathered the gist of where I am coming from. My g grandfather was William Tedford (1848 - 1912)  of Strandtown posting establishment. Ros Davies site on Co Down states that a Capt James Tedford from Donaghadee had a son, David Lowry Tedford, buried in Killinchy graveyard in 1838. This of course may have been a son of the Chandler Tedford. As we have no verification of these at the moment, most of it is speculation. Any information you have re any of the Tedfords would be wonderful as you seem to have gathered more info than me. Have you found out yet who the father of your James Tedford is or what area of Belfast they came from? It is possible that we are connected as I think most of the Tedfords from Belfast around that time were. I will gladly share my info with you if you want to email me on (*) I look forward to hearing from you!

Realise this is an old chat, so perhaps this is now irrelevant, but I am descended from WFCS Corry (William Frederick Charles Steuart Corry) and Jane Tedford. I have a lot on the Corrys but little on the Tedfords so far. WFCSC was the son of Thomas Charles Steuart Corry, MP for County Monaghan, and his (I believe third) wife, Mary Britnell.

Hi!!

I was so pleased to get a response!!  As you can see I am trying to trace our Tedford  family (James Tedford B. 1846 in Belfast) back to Belfast.  I have been in contact with "mandrake" and we weren't  been able to connect our families so far.  My records find our  James Tedford  in Toronto, Ontario in 1866 and married to Elizabeth Jennings. Baptismal records of their first child indicated that James' parents were James & Mary Tedford.   He had a brother John Tedford (B. 1848 in Belfast) that lived next door in Toronto as well.  We found just withing the last 3 months that their was a sister Mary Anne (B. 1831 Ireland) Tedford living in Toronto also.  Would be interested in your "Jane Tedford"  info; any connection to our family.  Best Regards,  Elizabetherin

From probate of 19 Jan 1907:  William Frederick Charles Steuart Corry of Glenbank, Bangor, County Down, and of Cromac Street, Belfast, to Ernest Steuart Corry, director, and to Mary Steuart Corry and Jennie Steuart Corry spinsters.

Ernest (1874-1927) was my Great Grandfather. Mary and Jennie were his sisters.

Is his Glenbank, County Down nearby Mandrake's (22 May 07) Glenbrook, Bangor address for Margaret Lowry Tedford?

Incidentally there is a branch of the Corry family that is Lowry Corry

Thoughts?

Hi!

Your are probably aware but just case....I was looking at the wills calendars on the PRONI site and there are some that have the complete images of the wills.  In one of the wills your Jane Tedford Corry is mentioned.  She was a daughter of James Tedford of the Chandlrey family, second generation.  I am assuming this may be your family member.

Best regards,

Susan

My family were good friends of William Tedford of Ascalon house, Donaghadee, DoB 1916, DoD 1993 and I have recently came across a large collection of Tedford family letters and documents. As a historian I am reluctant to just dispose of these and would like to hear from anyone with a connection to the Tedford family.
