Hi Ian
Thank you for this. I don't have an Edward Jones married to Ann Stonestreet but no doubt there is a connection here somewhere. Does the Sussex Marriage Index give any information about them?
The census data that you supplied definitely relates to my family and has filled in a few gaps for me.
:)
-
With apologies to Ian, but just in case you were waiting for the information,
Salehurst, East Sussex, 25 Apr 1835:
Ann STONESTREET
Edward JONES, (B)
That's the extent of the information. (B) means by banns,

Hi Jane
Thank you very much for this but I am now a bit confused!
This is the same date that I was given for the marriage of my Richard Jones and Ann Stonestreet. I have Richard's birth date circa 1813 at Salehurst, the son of John Jones and Jane Brett
Richard and Ann are recorded in the census records as follows:
1841 - Salehurst
1851 - Etchingham
1861 - Etchingham
1871 - Etchingham
1881 - Salehurst
1891 - no trace
I have the following children Richard and Ann:
Mary Ann born circa 1835 at Salehurst
John born circa 1838 at Salehurst
William born 31 Oct 1841 at Etchingham
Harriett born circa 1844 at Etchingham
James born 10 Jul 1848 at Etchingham
Sophia born 1851 at Etchingham
Ellen born circa 1856
I wonder whether Richard and Edward are in fact the same person?
-
??? That is weird. I've checked the index under Richard Jones/Ann Stonestreet & there's only the Edward marriage. What was your source for the Richard/Ann marriage? Maybe he was baptised Richard Edward or Edward Richard & used one or the other ???

mmmm a bit of a puzzle! I have a note that 'my' Richard died 19 Feb 1882 at Hurst Green, Sussex. Perhaps his death cert might hold the answer or some clues. Can english certs for this period be obtained online?
-
I realised that I had read the name "Stonestreet" recently when researching my "Gadd" family in Salehurst. I expect you already have the info but in case not:
RG 13/893 Folio 22 page 6
Reginald Stonestreet (head) aged 25 born Robertsbridge
Mary (wife) aged 29 born Ewhurst
Gracy Cook (daur) aged 5 born Salehurst
-
Hi
You can order all BMD certificates from 1837 onwards online. They are free to search on www.ancestry.co.uk (scroll down on the home page and click the link on the right hand side) and there is a link to order them from the GRO. They cost £7. You can also write to the local register office.
Often death certificates are not very useful though. They give age, address and occupation and the name of the informant but no birth date. They may say "widow of/husband of" but not much else.
I wonder if he left a will? That might be a better bet.

Thanks to Conygar and Andrea for their responses.
I don't know anything about Reginald Stonestreet but given that he was born in Robertsbridge I guess there is probably a connection somewhere. Do you have any more info about him?
:)
-
There is a death registered in Jan. quarter 1882 at Ticehurst ref 2b 75. Richard Jones age 67.
Reginald is a son of James and Emily Stonestreet. They are in Salehurst on the 1881 census. There are two James, age 5, in 1851. One is with parents Ward and Ellen and the other with Solomon and Mary. They are both from Brightling. HO107 1636 Folios 454 and 438

I have no record of either Ward or Solomon, which explains why I did not know about Reginald either!
Looks like I have a lot more Stonestreets still to find. The name does not seem too common outwith the Sussex area, so I expect they all connect somewhere.
:)

There are 166 marriages for Stonestreet and variants on the Sussex Marriage Index.

Hope this clears up things.

Hi Legacy
Thank you for this - it makes things much clearer for me. Perhaps the person compiling the index got the first name of one of the witnesses confused with that of the groom!
Congyar
Thank you for the details regarding Reginald Stonestreet. I did not previously know about Reginald - do you know the date of the info that you provided and who Reginald's parents were?
I guess I now need to find where Ward Stonestreet and Solomon Stonestreet, who are mentioned by Sillgen, fit into the scheme of things.
:)
-
Oooops! Just realised Sillgen has already given Reginald's parents>

Hi Ian
Thanks for this. I did not have Saul's marriage so this is very useful to me.

Hi,
I'm related to the long line of Stonestreet's from Sussex. I have come across your family but unfortunately have never been able to make a connection back to the main line. The good news is that I am in contact with descendants of your family - James and Mary's line. If you would like to email me chilverATbigpond.net.au I can help with more details.
Cheers

I have just seen this thread and I am currently researching the Henry Stonestreet and Sarah Waters line at Brightling. Their daughter Ann married into my Winchester family, if you want to compare notes or some help with this line let me know.

Hello,
Richard Jones and Ann Stonestreet are my 4th Great Grandparents. Their son William Jones married Charlotte Oxenbridge December 2, 1865 in Etchingham. William and Charlotte's daughter, Ellen Jones (My Great Great Grandmother), married Alexander Shepherd August 30 1890 in Kent. In 1905 they emigrated to Oshawa, Ontario, Canada with their Children: Henrietta, Alexander, Alfred and Violet. They then had Fredrick, John and Joy in Canada. Their daughter Henrietta is my Great Grandmother. She married Harry Warren in 1917 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Not long after she married Harry her parents (Alexander Shepherd and Ellen Jones) moved with the younger children to Pasadena, California, USA. They lived there the remainder of their lives. Henrietta stayed in Toronto and had many children and grandchildren.
