Hi Billy!  I am gobsmacked at your messages over the last couple of years which I have spent the whole of tonight reading.  My 3xGreat Grandfather was John Anderson (directly through the paternal side) who married Janet Binning.  Couldn't believe that Smith Anderson was a Provost in Kilsyth and phoned my dad to tell him, only for him to say "oh yeah ... I do remember that now!!"  Whilst I have explored other avenues of the family tree, I have only just started exploring this side.  Only two weeks ago I ventured to Kilsyth to look for a graveyard (I'd never been before), eventually found it just as I was about to give up, wandered in and very quickly found the gravestone for my ancestors.  Details as follows:

Erected by Smith Anderson in memory of his daughter Janet born 1853 died 1856
Also his son William born 1859 died 1865
The above Smith Anderson born 1826 died 1900
His daughter Jeannie born 1856 died 1901
His wife Marion Benny born 1825 died 1907
His son Smith born 18(6?)1 died 1935

I have also just found the wills of John and Smith Anderson which I am currently working my through to decipher the writing and legal jargon.  It would appear however that John had two wives.  He left money to his family - James (New York), John (Gateshead, Newcastle), Alexander (Bathgate), William (Denny) and Smith (Denny) to his first wife;  John Rae (Illinois), Peter (New York), and Christian (Boston) to his second wife.  There is too much to mention here but I'm sure it is all the right family.  It would be good to hear your thoughts and if you think these are the same Andersons as yours.

Must get off now.  Another late night on the computer!!

Thanks Billy for your replies.  Have been struggling tonight to find out how to send you a PM. Ended up in the Chatroom where they thought I had to post 3 messages myself first - so will try this avenue and see if it then gives me the option to 'send personal message'. Still getting to grips with the website.  ???
Kind Regards
Eastend

Hi Billy,

Have just spoken to my dad who is going to go to Denny and Kilsyth with my sister today to do a bit of 'rooting aboot'. Told him to take a camera, so who knows, maybe by tonight we could see what Lord Provost Smith Anderson looked like!  Wonder if there'll be a family resemblence?  Can't wait.

Hi Lesley, Thanks for the photos.
How long do you think it took Smith to grow that Beard!!
Your Smith Anderson who was born to John Anderson and Janet Binning was born
in 1826 so in 1889 he would have been 73 years old.
His nephew Smith Anderson born to William Anderson and Hellen Miller was born in 1867 so in 1889 he would have been 22 years old so is he 73 or 22!

Good point well made Billy.  Though if you hide his beard he's got quite young looking eyes - but still not time enough to grow that beard if he's only 22.

Found the birth of Janet Binning on 5th September 1773 to a William Binning and Janet Nisbet in Bathgate. Also found the birth date of John Anderson (21 May 1786) which explains why I didn't find out that he had children even earlier than the ones I already had.  I had his birth date as 1796 which was obviously 10 years too late.  Not got as much time to look up things now that I'm back to work. I believe my sister is going to be joining us soon!!  No show without punch!! :)

Hi Lesley,
The way things are going we will have to organise an Anderson Clan gathering at uncle Jimmie,s Anderson Public Park!! though I don,t think there would be much room for any members of the public, we would have to reclaim it as Anderson property for the day!!
Your Skin 'n' blister has made contact, Kind regards Billy.

Hi Billy,

Totally forgot about John Anderson's three children who went to America.  Have attached some bits of information on John Rae Anderson that I found on a couple of websites and copied them onto a page of notes to go back to later.  It looks like both he and Provost Smith Anderson (his half brother?) had aspirations to hold political office and managed it on both sides of the Atlantic!  Be interested to know your thoughts.

Best Wishes

Lesley

Hi Lesley.

I too, have a 3xGreat Grandfather John Anderson of Bathgate. I am cleaning out my parents home and found quite a bit of 'history' of John R. Anderson. Including a photo album from the late 1800's.  My father, John R. Anderson IV, only recognizes my grandfather, J Bruce Anderson I. My brother was John R. Anderson V. My fathers Uncle was John R Anderson III and his grandfather was John R. Anderson II, Mayor of Park Ridge Illinois, 1925-1929.  I have his campaign poster hanging on the wall in my office.

Would it be possible to get copies of John Anderson's will and any other information you may have?

Wish I had this information when I was stationed with the USNavy at RAF Edzell in the 1970's!

Regards, Bruce

Hi Bruce,
So glad you've posted your message on RC. It's been so long since I've had time to look at my family history 'stuff' - it's made me look it all out and got me enthused again! I too have a copy of the will you're after, which shed light on John Anderson having a 2nd wife Janet Rae (b. Shotts 1797). Janet Rae and John married 30 Jan 1831, their children, John Rae, Peter, Christian and Janet (but you possibly know this already). Interestingly, whilst John Rae became Mayor in Illinois, John's (rural postman in Bathgate) son to his first wife Janet Binning, Smith Anderson, became Lord Provost of Kilsyth in the late 1800's. That Smith Anderson is my 2x Great Grandfather.  Will send you a personal message as I've other things to ask you.
Kind Regards,
Lesley

Hi Billy,
Nice to hear from you again. Hope you are all keeping well too.  I'll see if I can remember how to do attachments and send it on to Bruce. I lost many of the documents I had saved when my PC crashed some time ago. So I've been having to build it all up again. Lesson to be learned there methinks!
Best Wishes, Lesley

Hi Billy/Lesley/Betty,

Greetings from California! Stumbled upon this site today and have been reading through the posts on the Anderson lineage. All of it is very fascinating! Smith Anderson (Bathgate) is my 3x great grandfather. My grandfather was Smith Chesley Anderson Jnr. Are you able to share Smith Anderson's Will papers and Smith Anderson Kilsyths passport paperwork if you still have copies? I'd love to add to my very limited historical archive. I have some information on the voyage to America that my grandfather shared years back that I am happy to dig up if anyone is interested.

Cheers,

Tyler
