I am tracing my mother's paternal line.
so far
Jocelyn Baxter (my mother) b 1936 Tauranga NZ d 06 Dec 1989
John (known as Jack) Cunningham Baxter b 1901 Kokiri, Tauranga, NZ
Sisters Isa and Pearl (mrs Ross Clark)
Thomas Baxter (John's Dad) m (Sarah) Amelia Cunningham in Taipo NZ
(died 10 Jan 1927 aged 59). Brother William.
Thomas Baxter m (1858 Holytown, bothwell, Lanark) Christina Pettigrew (died 14 March 1883 (Hokitika, NZ). William and James were brothers. All 3 joined as sawmillers in NZ.
James Baxter m Euphemia Gibb in Bothwell 27 November 1836
And then I am stuck!
-
Oh, for those who may have similar relatives, the baxters of my line arrived on the Robert Henderson in about 1866.

Hi Merlinnz
You might get some clues from the 1851 Census re James and Euphemia. Have you got this (family transcribed as Baster):
James Baster 35, collier, b. Newton, Midlothian
Euphemia Baster 34, b. Bothwell
David Baster 14, collier
Thomas Baster 11, collier
William Baster 9
James Baster 7
Jane Baster 5
Betty Baster 3
Agnes Baster 3 Mo
Address: Cleland Road, Newarthill, Bothwell, Lanark

These are some of the children's birth/christenings showing on IGI:
1. AGNES BAXTER Christening: 12 JAN 1851 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland
2. EUPHEMIA BAXTER Christening: 13 MAR 1853 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland
3. ISABELLA BAXTER Birth: 22 SEP 1855 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland
4. WALTER BAXTER Birth: 06 MAY 1858 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland
5. PETER BAXTER Birth: 01 JAN 1861 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland
You're in luck :) - an 1855 birth for Isabella (No.3 above). The first year of official registration in Scotland resulted in a wealth of information being included on the BMDs that year. For that year only the entries ran over two pages of the register and for births, will include age of parents, where they were born, how many children they'd had (alive/deceased) etc.
Image available to view on Scotlands People.

You're a star!!!! I did do census searches but I searched baxter, so how did you find them under baster?
-
The joy of Ancestry and wider search parameters (I searched for Agnes - no surname born in Bothwell in 1851 with a father James :)
Family Search/IGI is on site maintainance (for the last two weeks :-\). I can only get so far and then it stops. There is this birth for example:
JAMES BAXTER Birth: 09 FEB 1816/ Christening: 25 FEB 1816 Newton, Midlothian, Scotland
I can't see who his parents were...I'm hoping it's a David like the name of James and Euphemia's eldest son showing in 1851!
You also have the option of looking at James and Euphemia's death certs on Scotlands People which will include their parents' names (if known to the informant). There is a death of a Euphemia Gibb/Baxter born c. 1817 in 1875 in Lanark. If the right one, it will show whether James was still alive at this point or whether Euphemia was already a widow - helps to narrow down his death years.
Regards.

This looks like a possibility for Euphemia's birth or christening on the OPRs:
30/03/1817 GIBB EUPHEMIA THOMAS GIBB/JEAN CUTHBERTSON FR379 F Bothwell /LANARK 625/ 0010 0530

:( I've given up with IGI and searched on SP's OPR index for James:
25/02/1816 BAXTER JAMES DAVID BAXTER/ELISABETH BROWN FR849 M Newton /MIDLOTHIAN 696/ 0030 0119
That takes care of the first boys' names ;)
Regards.

Did the whole family including parents leave in 1866, can't see them in 1871. Below is their 1861 entry:
James Baxter 45
Euphemia Baxter 44
William Baxter 19
James Baxter 17
Jane Baxter 15
Betsy Baxter 13
Agnes Baxter 10
Euphemia Baxter 8
Isabella Baxter 5
Walter Baxter 2
Peter Baxter 3 Mo
Address: Hamilton Rd, Holytown, Bothwell
-
My knowledge is only that the three boys, Thomas, William and James left for NZ.
I am going to do some searching and retrieval now, I jhave just finished work.
-
James died 22 Dec 1878 in Hamilton, Lanark, his son Walter was present and witness this and his mother's death cert.
As you rightly found, parents are david and elizabeth (nee brown).
-
David and Elizabeth married in Newton, Midlothian 19/3/1814
-
Euphemia was born 14 July 1814! So I guess they "had" to get married!
-
Jean Cuthbertson was married to ThomaGibb on 23 June 1798 in Shotts, Lanark
Jean was born 1779 Newarthill Lanark
Thomas was born 1775 Newarthill Lanark
-
1871 census
1871 BAXTER EUPHEMIA F 54 LARKHALL /LANARK 638/01 004/01 010
James baxter 55
William (I thnk) 29
Walter 12
Peter 11
Euphemia 18
Euphemia (grand daughter) 7

Apart from Euphemia, some siblings showing for James Baxter on the OPRs:
1. 02/07/1825 BAXTER JOHN GRAHAM @ Newton/MIDLOTHIAN 696/ 0050 0065
2. 07/06/1823 BAXTER PETER @ Newton/MIDLOTHIAN 696/ 0050 0043
3. 05/08/1820 BAXTER THOMAS @ Newton/MIDLOTHIAN 696/ 0050 0058
4. 12/06/1818 BAXTER WILLIAM @ Newton/MIDLOTHIAN 696/ 0030 0134

This looks a possibility for James's mother Elizabeth in the 1841 Census, everyone showing as born out of the county:
Elizabeth Baxter 47
Thomas Baxter 20, miner
Peter Baxter 18, engineer
Isabella Baxter 13
Margret Baxter 8
James Bailie 20, lab. b. England
Address: Village Of Newarthill, Bothwell Holytown
-
so that would make Elizabeth born in the mid 1790's.
-
This is the only death of an Elizabeth Gibb/Baxter coming up on SP post 1855 with a birth year of 1790 +/- 10yrs:
1872 BAXTER ELIZABETH BROWN F 87 POLMONT /STIRLING 487/00 0004
As always with SP, you can't tell which is the maiden /married name.
Regards.

and provided I didn't take a wrong turn, that's as far as I got.
-
Tracey, you have been BUSY :)
Couldn't find much more than you have already found. Just a couple of more children to James Baxter = Isobel Ross:
Marriage - 1792:
1793 - David
1794 - Agnes
1797 - Katherine
1798 - James
1801 - Isabel
1803 - Sarah
1804 - Margaret
1807 - William
1810 - Thomas
If parents to James are James and Katherine, then potentially that leaves David and Agnes for Isabel's.
Pity the family lines didn't used family surnames as middle names as that would have helped in verifcation. As you know, it gets harder and harder the further back you go as records get thinner on the ground.
Regards.
Monica :)

Hi Merlinnz
I've only just read your email re James Baxter and Euphemia Gibb, to whom I'm related.
I don't know how far you've progressed with your documentation of this family but I can tell you that Euphemia Baxter, daughter of James Baxter and Euphemia Gibb, married Robert Benson on 12 April 1872 in Hamilton.
There were seven children born to Robert Benson and Euphemia Baxter. Among them is William Baxter Benson, who married Maggie Paton Paterson, daughter of Gavin Paterson and Janet Naismith (my great uncle and great aunt).
I've documented this family in my private tree on Ancestry.
If you send me a PM with your email address, I'll provide further information.
Cheers,
Rodeo

My grandfather, James Edgar Baxter is related to James Baxter and Euphemia Gibb by direct decent. His parents were Thomas Baxter, 1850 - 1926 and Emma Hobson 1851 -1909. His daughter Hilda May (nee Baxter) was my mother. He died in 1954. My grandfather married Mary Alsop in 1912, and lived at 23 Park Road, Thackley, Yorkshire, UK. My grandfather also served in India and Pakistan with the British Army. Several of his children were born there. Edward, Stanley,Clifford,Kenneth were the boys and he had two daughters Hilda (my mother) and Winifred. His last address was at Cleverly Gardens, Acton, London. He also worked as a coal merchant's clerk. I am interested to talk to a NZ branch of the family. I have looked up Newtown, Lanarkshire and it was a mining village. It is still there but of course no mining carried out now. It was probably lack of work and poverty that cause the three brothers to relocate to New Zealand. i have visited Auckland and Rotaroua in the past, I have a new Zealand friend who comes from Auckland. Where abouts in New Zealand did your branch of the Baxter family start from?
