Title: Any Tyrrells or Flynns out there?
Post by: Miran on Wednesday 16 May 07 14:17 BST (UK)
Hello, I'm interested in finding any Tyrrell or Flynn relatives.  My Grandfather, Charles Tyrrell, was a coal miner in Bothwellhaugh, married Mary Flynn around 1901 and had two children (Charles, who's my father, and Ella).  He and Mary emigrated to the States in 1910 but sadly she died there a few months later at age 29.  I think the Flynns lived in or near Bothwell, and some of them emigrated to Australia.  Before they emigrated (to Windber, USA) my grandparents lived in Roman Place in Bothwell which was where my Dad was born.  If any of this sounds familiar to you, I'd love to hear from you!

If you ever discover that your Mary Flynn was from the Dundee area before Bothwellhaugh, I would be interested to hear from you. From memory, there are some folks on Genes Reunited who are researching the Flynn/Flinn surname in Lanarkshire in your timescale, may be worth checking with them  too.

Have you thought of trying to get their marriage certificate on Scotland's People - could be of great help to you? They may have married in Bellshill in 1905. If you have tried before with no success, I would suggest doing the search by using wildcards for name spelling ie Tyr*ll and Fl*nn.

Do let us know how you get on.

Hi, Here is another Tyrell from Bothwellhaugh. Unfortunately I cannot find his death certificate. There are Tyrells in Burnbank Hamilton who are related to the Tyrells from Bothwellhaugh.

Hello Miram,

I have been looking into my family tree and came across your message on rootschat although  I realise it was in 2007.

My grandmother's birth certificate names her parents as Charles Tyrrell (coalminer) and Mary Flynn which makes them my great grandparents.

My grandmothers birth certificate has Charles and Mary's wedding date as 19th January 1905.

They had 2 children.  My grandmother who was born in November 1905 and is called Helena (Ella?).
My grandmother had a younger brother called Charles.  I have been looking for them unsuccessfully in the 1911 Census and if it is the same family then it makes sense that they will not show up on the census if they emigrated to the USA.  Helena (if it is the same person) must have come back to the UK as she married my grandfather in 1929.

I know that Charles attended my grandmothers funeral in Lanarkshire in 1960.  I was only a baby but my parents told me he was there.

I'd be really grateful if you could let me know if it is the same family.

I may be able to fill in any gaps in your search.  I have a little information about the Tyrrells and Flynns in Belfast.

Yours,

Gerry
