Title: Birth Look Up c.1850 - 1851 Please
Post by: jennirosa on Wednesday 16 May 07 06:42 BST (UK)
Hello there!

Could someone please have a look for the birth of "Ellen Chittenden". Father George Chittenden. Mother Margaret Cobb. Parents born Hinxhill, Kent.
Born in New Zealand probably 1851, as they came back to Australia late 1851 with a baby. Christened in Maitland NSW. But birth was NZ.

Says Cowan Island on her death certificate...but I think it maybe Kawau Island. The family arrived in Sydney 1849 on the Agenoria, but sometime after went onto NZ for a couple of years.  ???

Thank you!

Also a brother of George may have gone to NZ with the family Jesse Chittenden born Hinxhill, Kent c.1826. Cannot find him in Australia. He possibly could of stayed in New Zealand?

cheers,
Jennirosa

Hello Bren!

Thanks for looking up Jesse! Is there an age for him, by any chance?
I'm afraid I can't help with any info on him only that he was on the Agenoria with his two brothers and sister-in-law.

Apparently a Daniel Chittenden also living in Australia went to NZ to live, so that one could be him. I don't know if he is from our Chittendens or not? ???

And yes I would like you to see if you can find the birth for Ellen Chittenden too!

Look forward to hearing from you next week!

Cheers now,
Jenni in Port Macquarie NSW

Hi Jenni

I've been thinking about that marriage for Jesse.
If he was born c. 1826, he would have been 60 at the time of marriage in 1886.

Maybe it's a son OR he was a LOT younger than his brother....

Have you seen the passenger list and found an age for him?

Bren.

Jesse was ELLENS (b 1851)  uncle, so marriage still possible.

Hi Jenni

I'm SOOOOOOO sorry.
I realised when I went to enter some more look-ups in my notebook that I hadn't crossed yours off - therefore hadn't posted the results.

Unfortunately there were no CHITTENDEN births registered in NZ 1840-58.

Could she have been born in Canada, as there is a Cowan Island there??

Hello Bren!

I'm just back on line again. Computer Failure! Technician has fixed the problem at last!

Maybe they did go to Cowan Island Canada?  :-\

There is nothing for Kawau Island New Zealand? Maybe they didn't bother registering her birth as they would have been heading back to Australia?
We have her Christening on NSW BMD but it's definately Christening not Birth!
George was possibly a Miner. So I don't think it would have been Canada as New Zealand is also mentioned on her Wedding Certificate.

Thanks again   :)

Interesting. Ellen was my grandmother's aunty. My grandmother lived around Blayney - Orange all her life and my mother  remembers great Aunt Ellen. So I'm not sure how or when or why she may have ended up in NZ.
