Title: Stafford family in Wexford
Post by: christinabell on Wednesday 16 May 07 03:05 BST (UK)
Hello everyone,

I am looking for information on my brick wall... otherwise known as Stephen Nestor Stafford. He was born in Wexford a Roman Catholic, and later went to  work as a manager on a sugar plantation in St Thomas, West Indies.  There he married Wilhelmina Lang in abt 1861 and had two sons, William Eugene Stafford b abt 1862 and John Ingham Stafford b abt 1867.   Stephen died there in about 1870.

If anyone has any information on this family it would be greatly appreciated.  Unfortunately Stafford seems to be a pretty popular name in Wexford and Im finding it hard to determine which ones are mine.

Many thanks,
Christine
Sydney, Australia

Christine,
Althought Stafford is a common name in Wexford you have a big clue here.  Nestor is very unusual.  It seems to me that it is probably a surname (being used as a second Christian name).  So perhaps you would have more luck following Stephen's mother's line.  A quick scan of the Griffith's Valuation shows a James Nestor in St. Selskars in Wexford town.   Familysearch.org brings up 43 Nestor records so you may have some luck by focusing on the districts shown for these.  No Nestors (or variants) show in the 1911 census, but one shows in the 1901 census in Wexford town, although he was from Co. Clare.  My gut feeling is that this Nestor was not a Wexfordian.

Good luck,
Eileen

Hi,

Do you have lots for Christinabell or do my listed Staffords ring any bells with you? I am still very keen on learning more about my Stafford lineage from Adamstown, Enniscorthy Co. Wexford.

Thanks,
Mrs Kojak
