Title: Watermen and lighter-men Apprenticeships Bindings Look up Please?
Post by: paxisnz on Tuesday 15 May 07 06:23 BST (UK)
Suzey -  are you happy to keep looking things up - don't want to over burden you!!
If so am looking for a James CANN of Lambeth (not the famous one married to Elizabeth but my one was married to Jane PAINE in 1834) who was a WATERMAN.
By 1835 they were in Richmond Surrey
Also his son Henry living in White Cross bulls in 1881 - also a waterman.
Many thanks

Hi paxisnz, hope you don't mind me piggybacking on your post, but I couldn't see any other related thread  :)
If Suzey is possibly offering lookups, may I be so cheeky as to ask for one too?
I would like to know whether the Bindings mention Jethro DOBSON, born 1826 Eton, Bucks and a waterman on the census from 1871 onwards.  There is a family story (completely unverified) that he was a swimming master at Eton, and that he was one of the Queen's watermen, but I always take these tales with a very large pinch of salt!
Thank you very much for any help.

Cheers
Prue

hi there,
im sure waterman can have various interpretations but in my ancestors case he was so called because he used to own a little boat and earned his living ferrying people across from devon to cornwall, sort of like a water taxi! but dont suppose they had heard of the word taxi then!

The job of a waterman was to ferry people on a river.  In London many went on to become lighterman, unloading cargo from large ships on the Thmaes.

There's a very interesting entry for Watermen on Wikipedia

Sorry I did not spot this new thread sooner.
In reply to an earlier message from Paxisnz.
I have searched the bindings and can only find the following Cann names:

George Cann bound 21/10/1819 in Lambeth to Thomas White not completed
James Cann bound 04/05/1820 in Richmond to Theophilus Ellard completed 12/07/1832
John Cann bound 14/06/1855 in Richmond to James Cann completed 08/07/1862
Charles Cann bound 09/09/1862 in Southwark to James Gingell Jnr completed 12/01/1869
Edward Cann bound 12/04/1870 in Southwark to George Salt completed 09/05/1876
Henry Cann bound 14/07/1868 in Richmond to James Fruin completed 12/08/1873

There are also some Paine names on the bindings if you have any specific names for Jane's family.

Regards
Sue

Just spotted this thread; hope I can sneak a request in.

On 1851 census John Pain/e (bc1828 Woolwich) is listed as a waterman; can you find him listed?

His family are beginning to live up to their name.

Hi Prue

I cannot find a Jethro Dobson in the apprentice bindings or in the "Contracts for over aged boys 1868-1926"

I suspect that Eton would be inside of the area covered by the Company Of Watermen and Lightermen as I believe that they covered from Windsor to Gravesend.

Hi Nanny Jan

Looks like I may have found him, I have also included two other listings which may be relevent.

John Hutcheson Pain bound 13/01/1842 in Woolwich to William West - completed 08/02/1849
Henry Edmund Langham bound 13/04/1854 in Woolwich to John Hutcheson Pain - not completed
william Pain bound 09/06/1831 in Woolwich to John Wright Bull - Not completed - Dead

Hope this is the right family.

Hi Sue,

That's great.... JH Pain is my man and William I think is his brother; William died 1838/9.

Do you know why Henry bound to John 1854 did not complete?  I'm curious because I might have found John on 1881 census in Portland Prison, but listed as a fishmonger.

Thanks,

Nanny Jan

Hi Nanny Jan

Sorry I can't really be of any further help. The indexes do not say why this was not completed. I have checked some original bindings I have for my family and it is unusual to mention why the apprenticeship was not completed. I have checked the reassignments and nothing is listed for Henry Langham.

A normal apprenticeship lasted 7 years and therefore whatever caused Henry to stop his apprenticeship must have happened before 1860, are there any clues in the 1861 census?

Regards
Jamie

Hi Jamie,

Sadly the 1861 census sheets for that part of Woolwich are lost/destroyed; just thought it might give me so more info about JH Pain.

Thanks for checking for me,

Hello Sue
Thankyou for replying.  I am looking for William Farson born around 1800 not sure which side of the river he was born but I  think he and his family were from Southwark.  He married my GGgrandmother Sarah Ward in 1818 at St Leonards Shoreditch.  Her father was John Ward born around 1770/80 who came from East London.
Not sure if this is much help but will keep my fingers crossed.
Thankyou once again
Val

Hello Sue
I hope you wouldn't mind helping me again with the Ward name.  I am now looking for John Ward born c1800 in Surrey, Thomas Ward born c1802 in Southwark, William Ward b c 1800 in Bermondsey/Southwark and James born c 1811 in Southwark.
I have found quite a few Ward's of different ages who were Watermen/Lightermen living on both sides of the Thames.  Do you think that they may be from the same family group as I understand that this profession was kept in the family.
Also do you know what a Fellowship Porter was or did?.
Many Thanks
Val

May I join the queue?

If time permits, I would be interested in William (George) Ives born 20 June 1878 Rotherhithe. Also wondering if there is a Bertram V Ives born 1912.

Thank you for your time,

Hi g a r

I think this is your William.

William Ives bound 10/5/1898 at Newington to Thomas George Arle  completed 12/5/1903

He was also listed in "Binding dates and affidavit birth proofs 1898-1949"
William Ives bound 10/5/1898 - born 20/6/1878 Rotherhithe

There are no Bertram V Ives listed.

Thank you very much Sue!

Shame about Bertram (he was William's son).

I don't suppose there are any Ives that show up after 1918. I'm hoping that perhaps one of William's sons may have followed in his father's footsteps.

cheers,

Hello Suzy,  Could I also ask for a look-up please?  I do not have very much information on the following individuals though.

i.    John BAGGOTT a lighterman who was described on a wedding cert in 1870 as "deceased formally a lighterman".  I would imagine that he probably lived around the Chelsea, Battersea or, possibly Marylebone areas.

ii.   John CHEESELEY c1809, a lighterman.

iii.  Any names concerning CHEESLEY/CHEESELEY who were watermen.  Probably Harefield, Marylebone, Chelsea, Battersea areas.

Many thanks.  Rosie

James Reeve bound 12/09/1844 at Woolwich to John Baggott completed 09/10/1851

Thank you very much Sue.

At long last I might have something on John Baggott.  Now to find the death reference.

I heard from family that there was a Cheeseley/Cheesley/Cheasley family that were "barge" people.  Do you know if that would be the same trade as watermen?

Again, thank you.  Rosie

Hi Sue

Is there any chance you could do a look up on the name Anthoney for me.

The names I am particularly interested in are George Augustus born 1796 Bankside, Surrey and also William  (his father) born circa 1766, I believe in Middlesex (not 100% where though yet), both are listed as Watermen on documentaion that I have found so far.

I would be very interested if you are able to locate any Anthoneys from Southwark, Bankside area of London as this seems to be where most of my Anthoney's are from and I have drawn a brickwall on this line.

Thanking you in advance.

Many thanks for that.  George Wright is a mystery until he turns up in Hull as a fisherman in 1884.  He was supposed to have been born in Middlesex around 1857 so it is possible that the first person you found could be him as he would have been 15 in 1872, however, if you think the 2nd one is his son then  it's not the right person as my George didn't die until 1935.

However, I will now have another trawl through Ancestry for Henry Reseigh to see whether I can find a connection.

When you have the time, could you look up Huntingfords who were watermen on the Thames?

I have Benjamin John b. c1850, his father Benjamin T b. 1825, and his father Robert b. 1798. I suspect there were others also keeping it in the family.

Many thanks.

Hello Suzey, could I be very cheaky and ask for a lookup when you have time?

I'm loking for the surname LANE. My gt grandmother claimed her father was a lighterman EDWARD LANE. The guildhall library were unable to find an apprentiship for an EDWARD LANE. When I got my gt grandmother's birth certificate, no father's name was mentioned but she was born in Rotherhithe. I'd like to know whether any LANES were ever lighterman

Oh...my...word....!

That'll keep me quiet for a bit  ;D

Thank you very much, Sue!

OH's young nephew from SA is here in London. He is a Huntingford and they have been in SA for three generations, and have no clue about their English past. Nephew has got a job on the Thames. So I did the tree and found to my amazement that it must be in the genes!

Now there are dozens of 'em!

Thanks again

If Sue is still doing lookups in the Watermen
and Lightermen apprenticeship bindings CD
could she please lookup and advise entries
for the RAYMOND surname. Among mine known to
have been lightermen just from the late 1700s
were definitely:

John Raymond 1783-1850 - father was John?
Mead Raymond 1885-1843 - father was John?
Augustus Raymond 1821-1877 - father was Mead
Mead Terry Raymond 1817-1866 -father was Mead

A similiar request message was sent to Sue's personal mailox before this topic was discovered.

Thank you,

John Raymond

Could you check for a Walter (James) Phillips c 1850/60's or any persons with the surnames Waldron or Parsons please.

Rumour has it that my Gt x2 Grandfather Walter worked on the Thames in his early years (he was born c1847 in Worcester).

The Waldrons & Parsons (usual christian names were Thomas, William, James or Joseph) were Rivermen based in the Worcester area but were also rumoured to travel extensively between Worcester, the Severn & the Thames.

Many thanks

Hi Sue

Could you please try a look up for William Rhodes who was described as a waterman but deceased on his son's marriage certificate in 1859. I can't say where William was working but the son (born around 1835) married and set up home in Lambeth.

Thanks

Hi Sue - thanks for lisiting those Parsons.

The only definite Parsons I have working on the Thames was a Joseph Parsons between 1800 & 1850

Unfortunately none of the Parsons listed look as if they are related to my Parsons who were, apparently, all based out of Worcester. I can only suppose that even though they did work on the Thames, their indentures must have been Worcester based.

Thanks for checking anyway - much appreciated.

Hello

Please could i ask for a look up of a supposed Waterman called John Burles, he was born in 1813, so guess maybe he was a waterman 20ish years or more after that. Also be interested in any other Burles that may be recorded.

Thank you Gary

I have been asked by someone about the signs which I have now found out what they mean.
The # sign indicates that the apprentice was reassigned to another master during his apprenticeship period.
The ** sign means that there is additional information is to be found in the original binding book regarding an address.

Sue, if you are still doing look ups and have a bit of time could you look up a Charles Pearce for me?

Charles was 40 years old at the time of the 1841 census and living at Kings Place, Crosby Row, Bermondsey. His occupation was listed as waterman. On the marriage certificate of his son in 1859 he was listed as deceased and his occupation was lighterman.

Thanks

Hi Sue

Do you have any BAYFORDs in your records please?

Specifically a William BAYFORD who (family story says) drowned around 1932 but had been working on the Thames.  I have a photo which might or might not be a lighterman's boat, with William in it.

He was born about 1908 we believe.

I hope this is still within the scope of your records.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Update: William BAYFORD was born in 1904 (illegitimately as William Bayford ROGERS).  His occupation on his marriage is "motor barge engineer" suggesting he is time-served apprentice Edit - looked again & I got it wrong - its motor, not master!

His grandfather was a lighterman - Alfred JONES who lived in Wapping, who had his own boat according to the 1891 census - can anyone throw any light on their occupational records please?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

I'm another hopeful.  I would be very pleased if you would be kind enough to look up Charles Wooderson  (slight chance he was called Robert and even slighter that the name is Woodson 8)) who was born in either 1809 or 1815 and worked as a waterman sometime prior to being sentenced to transportation for life from Surrey Assizes in 1832.  He may have come from Carlisle or Bermondsey.  Much appreciated.

Girtbysea Australia.

Since posting this, someone has most kindly searched the records for me unfortunately without success.  Thanks very much to that person and other would be helpers.

Thanks Suzy - lots to work on there!

Can you tell me whether the bindings lists are comprehensive?  And was an engineer likely to serve such an apprenticeship, or maybe something different?

Any opinion welcome

Kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

Hi Arranroots

The information I have is just an index of the bindings.  Your best bet is to go or contact the Guildhall library in London who hold the originals of the waterman and lighterman bindings to get further information about anyone who appears in the indexes.

The Guildhall Libary may also be the place to check out documents for other guilds and I am sure they may be able to help point you in the right direction for engineers.

Today once someone has passed a degree in engineering they are invited to join the Institute of Engineers but I am not sure when this institute was formed or if they have the ability to check historical records (sorry never come across any engineers in my research).

Kind Regards
Sue

Hi Kim

Here are the two you asked for.
Robert Thomas Carter bound 31/12/1807 at Greenwich ** to William Carter freedom 31/08/1815
Charles Henry Carter bound 09/09/1847 at Greenwich to Robert Thomas Carter freedom 11/06/1857

The ** sign means that there is additional information is to be found in the original binding book regarding an address.

I have only done the ones in Greenwich because there is a lot of Carter's all over London.
I will PM the rest.

Sue

Hi Suzey,

Only noticed this thread today!

I have 2 waterman in my family tree. Please could you check if their names exsist in your records?
The first Stephen Richardson was born 1797 in Keswick Cumberland. He definately was an apprentice in 1816 living in Maryport Cumberland.

The second I have less details on but he is cited as a waterman on his childs parish birth record. His name is William Page. His first child was born in 1818 in Rochester Kent. Therefore William Page would be born approx 1790s ish!!

Do you know where I can get any further information on Watermen?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

Hello Sue.  If you have the time could you please do a 'look up' for me.

I have an unusual surname in my family tree, and many were Watermen from Greenwich and surrounding areas around the late 1700's to mid 1800's.  I am looking for the surname Penniall, Penniale, Pennyale.

Many thanks.

Is there any information about the Watermen around Manchester and Salford? There was a 'riot' of some proportion by the Weaver Watermen and the evolution of railways had impact everywhere. There were photographs of vessels in the centre of Manchester on the Irwell in front of the Cathedral. There has to be a register of names of some sort?

Hi Suzey

I have just spotted your post and was wondering if you would be so kind as to look up John Pugh c1809 he was a waterman originally from Worcester but I cannot find him on the 1851/1861 census so I believe he must have been somewhere else. Hope this is all you need information wise to check on you bindings

Kind Regards
Sheila

Hi
I am not sure whether this is the right thread, but I could use some advice.  Would there be a site which would deal with bargemasters from the Wallingford/ Reading area?

The name of the family was Reading or Readings and variations.

Hi, I hope someone can help me. I've just managed to trace my grandfather. William John Carr. He was a lighterman, apprenticed in 1891 completed in 1898.   From reading the above messages, it seems that being a lighterman runs in the family. Are there any other Carr's mentioned in the apprenticeship records. He lived in Lambeth. I'm hoping to get his date of birth and parents names from the binding records too.
This is the first time I've posted anything!

I wondered if you could do me a real favour please.

I have hit a brick wall with my dads side of the family and am trying to find information on my 3 X great grandfather William Wilkinson. When his son Richard was born 1823 in Thorne he was a ships carpenter but by the time Richard was married in 1846 in Hull he was a shipwright as was Richard.

I don't know if you have any information that  might help me find a shipwright at that time but its my last hope. All I know about William is that he married someone called Sarah. I assume he was from Hull but don't really know. In the 1841 census Richard was staying with another family and there are too many Williams to guess which one could be mine, so if there is any information about shipwrights that might lead me to him, I would be so grateful.

Thank you.

Hi Sue, is it possible that you may be able to do a CD lookup for Watermen (two) with the same name - Thomas Hoare or Hoar. I do not think either had/used a middle initial in their names although I think that one may have been Thomas C Hoare. I know that both were listed as Watermen in the 1861 census and I believe that the younger (born about 1843) was the youngest ever Thames National Coat and Badge winner in 1861 (Although I have seen a listing of the winners of the Doggetts C & B and Hoare does not appear). The elder (the father) was born about 1822.

I would be grateful for any help.

Hi
Does anyone know why  some apprenticed to the Company of Lightermen and Watermen would also be in the Apprenticeship Listings for the Company of Vintners? I am descended from two families of Clerks and eventually Masters of both Companys and they appear to have flitted Apprenticeship between the both. Which I find really odd..aside from the theory of nepotism of course!
Hope someone can clear this up for me
Thank you

Sue, I have been scrolling through the masses of help that you have been giving everyone and since I am new to this kind of research, wonder if you could help me?  I am trying to trace a lighterman - surname Goss - whom I believe worked on the Thames in the 1930's.  He may have had his own business.  A relative certainly remembers watching the boat race from the craft at that time.  It is possible that the there were family river connections before this but I am making a start.  I know that this is an inconvenient  time to ask for help. You must be very busy.  Love B.

Hi there,

I wonder if you could help me please?

I have a William Thomas Thompson 1851 Bermondsey (born about 1817) and his son Christopher  Thompson 1861 Whitechapel (born about 1839) who are both lightermen.  The father says he is a lighterman master in 1861 (Whitechapel).  Could you see if you could find them for me please?

Does the lighterman 'master' bit have any significance?  I think the census says he employs 2 men.

Many thanks

suzey68  Many thanks for your help.  The last Goss is definitely part of the family but I notice a Pickering in there and that is a 1900 connection . It might just be a common Thames-side name.  This one was Lillian and she married Fred's brother Francis.  There is possibly a Pickering-Yorkshire connection. Have a very happy new year! Love B.

I hope you don't mind me asking, but could you have a look and see if you can find my gr.grandfather please.

The only info. I have is from my grandfather's marriage cert. where he states his father as William Welch, Lighterman.  Relatives seem to think the family are from the Camberwell/Bermondsey areas.  A long shot I know, but any help would greatly appreciated.

Hi Sue

Sorry, I didn't think!

I'm afraid info. about my 'Welch' family is very sparse.  The only thing I know for sure is that my grandfather married in Dec. 1907.  I can't even confirm birth year, but he gives his age as 25 on the marriage cert.

I can not find any William Welch around the dates where I think he would have been. The only thing did he go under a different name. Have you tried looking on the census for your grandfather and gt grandfather which might give us a few more clues.

hi Sue

i have only just found this thread and am not sure if you can help.
my gt gt grandfather is listed in the 1851 Census as being a waterman but i have no idea what that means.  His name was listed in the census as Williams Vincent born approx 1805 on Isle of Wight.  he had children born in Hythe Kent, Youghall Ireland and Rye Sussex but as i am in Australia i have no idea what these areas have in common except that they are near water.
i cannot find any other record of him.

Would you be able to help me at all with such basic information?

Kind regards

I would appreciate a further look up of the Watermen & Lightermen's indexes... the MAN/N results proved a wonderful shortcut to the records on a brief UK trip in Nov 08... now I find I have more to pursue ... GLEDHILL, [William Limbery c. 1800
St George in the East]. [Anthony/ey family also connected - have these from another persons enquiry.]

   Hello Sue ....

I wonder if you would be able to look at a name for me please.
In 1881 I have William Liscoe as a Lighterman- keeper b Horsleydown @1854.

Back in the 1700's Liscoe's appear as wharfingers around the Bemondsey /Southwark areas...... mostly Hay Wharf.

Are there any LISCOE names mentioned please.

  Many Thanks

It said that his occupation was Waterman/lighterman. underneath in smaller writing it says sm [or sw] gas co. he was also thought to be a sailor,

If you have the time, I'd appreciate a look-up for John Healey b. 1852 in Bermondsey who is listed as a lighterman on his daughter's marriage certificate.  Unfortunately, I have no more information than that.
Thanks.

Hi Suzey,

A possible candidate for my gt grandfather Cornelius Harrington claims to be a lighterman living in Ratcliffe, London on the 1881 census. This seems unlikely since he was a labourer on all the other census' I presume he would need to have served an apprentiship.

Would you mind looking? If he's the correct Cornelius he should be born around 1855 in Westminster

Hi Sue,
Like others I have just stumbled across your excellent work on here and am hoping you may be able to help me please.
I am looking for any information at all on the Brucas family who were watermen / Lightermen but seemed to have a distinct aversion to anything to do with census etc!
Immediate point of contact is Elias Brucas born c1780 and his son James Brucas c 1808.
As usual spellings are variously Brucas, Brucass, Brocas etc. etc I'm afraid.
The family seems to have been based mainly in the West of London, Brentford, Putney etc. but also in the Westminster area and seem to have married Kentish girls at least twice.

Any information very gratefully received!

Many thanks for your help.

best Regards

Mike

Dear Sue

I wonder if you could look for any reference to any BIDDLEs (also seen with various phonetic spellings as BIDDEL, BEDALL etc).

My Gtx3 Grandmother (Dinah Biddle)'s marriage certificate in 1850 (residence address given as Putney for bride & groom) records her father as William Biddle Fisherman. Dinah gives her place of birth (c1829) as Greenwich, Kent.

A William Biddle signed as witness so I'm assuming (if that was her father) he was still alive in 1850.

She married a Joseph DEARMAN (b Wandsworth c1818), a Coal Porter who was son of Joseph Dearman - also a Fisherman.

Any refs to these names would be much appreciated

Hello. Very new here. My GG-Grandfather ( Hiram Walter Laming b. 1828 Crayford, Kent.) was a lighterman, as was his father Richard Lamming (b. about 1798 Erith, Kent.) Can someone see if they can trace either of them ( or any other Lamings, Lammings ) on the Lighterman records for me? Don't know if I'm doing this (my first ever posting) correctly, but here is hoping it gets on to this board. Thanks - G-bird.

Hello Suzey,
Any chance you could look up Frank Francis Swift Kirby please who was termed a Waterman on the Thames at Maidenhead, Berkshire around the late 1880's?
I am not sure about this as I think you are only dealing with London Watermen?
Hopefully,
Abiam

Ps.  There is another one Thomas Humphreys Born 1791 in Aldgate Middlesex Waterman/Lighterman.  Many thanks,
Abiam

Dear Suzey

Is there any chance of you doing a lookup for me, please?

My ancestor was George Hastings, described as a mariner but he lived in Shadwell.  To give you a timescale; he had a child born in 1773, his first wife died in 1788, he remarried and had a son in 1797 ~ so George may have been born in 1750-ish.

Thank you in advance

Hi Sue,

I hope I'm not being too cheeky but I have only just found the Jameson side of my family were lightermen living in Bermondsey for generations. Now I know exactly what they did  ;D

Could you please have a look for Thomas A Jameson 1824, Samuel W Jameson 1854, Alfred Jameson 1856, James Jameson 1858, & the 1891 census shows Thomas Jameson 1862, as a waterman & lighterman!

Regards

O M Goodness.  :) I have just found this thread and so registered to post here.

After several years of stop /starting my family tree I have just got back into it again. Back then I was in the UK. These past 5 years though, I have been living in New Zealand so can't get to any hard copy records which is a huge shame  .

I've just found out from the 1841 census , that my grt , grt, grt grandad, John Blackmore,  was apparently a Waterman and Lighterman in London.  Wandsworth actually and seemed to live somewhere called 'Thames Bank' with his wife Maria and several children.
His date of birth approx 1791 from the census.

The 1951 census shows that he was still a Waterman and Lighterman living at 'Waterside ' still in Wandsworth.

Having looked up what the occupation was, I became quite excited to know that this was an actual licensed trade but a bit disappointed that there were no individual on-line records

I read from the thread that you, Suzey68 sometimes will look up the Waterman and Lightermen records for people.

If it's OK I was wondering if you could see if there is anything at all about these Blackmore folk and John Blackmore at this trade. I have read this can run in families.

I'll understand if you are inundated or simply too busy .

Can't offer anything in return unless you need something looked at here in Nelson, New Zealand but I would so appreciate anything you can help me with.  :-*

Looking at the 1841 census, 4 month old Frank was living with his parents 25year old George, a tailor and his his wife Elizabeth.  This doesn't ring any bells with me.  George isn't a family name of my Kirbys, but not that that means anything.

My Swift Kirbys were also lightermen at Twickenham, which is where the family came from.  There must be a connection, so I will do some investigating.  It might be easier to contact me directly on aol with my user name. Am I allowed to do that? If I can contact you directly then I can send copies of the census records.

Hi I'm wondering if anyone can help me. I'm trying to find out info on my mother in law's real father. All she know is his name was John Batty and he was an apprentice to his father as a waterman on the London docks. He was born in 1912, so therefore as they were not allowed to do this until they were 14 it would have been some time after 1921. She thinks he was from Yorkshire and lived in Twickenham. I've been trying to find out for her but just not having any luck. Thank you

Is Suzy still doing look-ups for Watermen/Lightermen.  Just found this post, quite a new member & still discovering interesting stuff on this site.

If so my man was: George Fowler 1857 - 1939 (Living in Battersea, 9 Elms c.1857 - 1911) seerved on boats named THe Winifred, Mabel & Edith - which he lovingly named my grandmother.

If records of other Fowlers in same area & dates would love to know about them.

If his apprenticeship is found, do you know where I might look for further informtion?

Hi Suzey,

the lookups that you have been doing are amazing and I'm hoping that I can add my family to your list. They have many generations of watermen/lightermen on the Thames and living in Australia I am limited to the information that I can access. I was able to check the Apprentice Bindings from 1798 onwards but would love to know of family watermen earlier than that date. I would also love if you could check the The Company of Watermen & Lightermen of the River Thames Admissions List for Pensioners 1794-1837 and The Company of Watermen & Lightermen of the River Thames Reassingments 1688-1908 for me. The surname is Puplett (Paplett/Poplett) and they were all mainly living in Woolwich/Bermondsey/Mile End. I greatly appreciate the time and effort that you have shown on everyone's behalf and hope that you will be able to help. I look forward to hearing from you and wish you a very Merry Christmas,
Regards, Jo :)

Hi Suzey
I'm so thrilled to find you. I have been trawling the internet looking for watermen on the Thames.... are you able to help another soul.
My ancestors (MARSHALL) were a long line of watermen on the Thames. Are you able to help? My Ancestor, WILLIAM ROBERT MAGNESS MARSHALL , was bound to his father, Jonathan on 14.9.1843
Also a brother JONATHAN MAGNESS MARSHALL bound to his father Jonathan on 8.11.1838
I believe he was born c 1815. Married in 1848.
Their father was JONATHAN MARSHALL .
Also, FREDERICK WILLIAM MARSHALL, son of William Robert Magness , bound on 10.4.1866
All listed as watermen.
I would like to go further back, if you can help.
Are you able to help. My mother tells me we are from a long line of watermen.

I too am searching for apprenticeship information about my watermen ancestors. Edward John LAWSON (my 3xgt.g'father) was born in Stepney in 1771, and was described as a "waterman" between 1795 and 1813. From 1815 to 1841(when he died), he was a "lighterman". His father was also Edward, and he probably died in 1789.
Edward John had four sons:-Edward John  b.1795; Nicholas b. 1799; James b. 1801;  Richard William b. 1815
So far, I have been unable to find out whether they also worked on the river.
For many years the family lived in the Ratcliff area of Stepney.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
So many questions i hope someone could help,
back in 2008 you posted a load of Tuckey waterman.  I am researching William Tuckey born in london in 1802 approx and listed in the 1841 census and in baptism records for his children as a waterman or lighterman.

in your original list one william tuckey didn't finish his apprenticeship so am i right in supposing that he wouldn't have had the right to call himself a waterman in census returns?

also the william tuckey who it might be was apprenticed in 1812 when he would have been 10 - 11 years would that be correct?
is there anywhere that the apprenticeship agreements can be looked at?
Thanks to all the fellow genealogists out there, you're always so helpful

Hi Sue, or any others,
I am researching a Henry Moss who, at the age of 50, left England in 1856 to set up a successful lighterage business in Melbourne, Australia.  I am interested if he was registered as a waterman/lighterman on the Thames in the period 1821-1855.  He had a father, John Moss, who we believe was also a lighterman.
Henry was born in 1807 and departed for Australia in January 1856.

Henry, we believe, ran a lighterage business on the Thames near Swan Lane, London with an office in 101 OR 106 Upper Thames Street, with 2 partners until 1843, aged 37,  when their partnership was dissolved. Their business name listing:  Moss, Leman & Bryan, wharfingers & shipping agents to all parts of Yorkshire & Lancashire, Commercial wharf & Old Swan pier, 101 Upper Thames street.

I also understand that there were quite a few lightermen/watermen with the surname of Moss.
Thank you in anticipation.

There is also a James Mansfield and Charles listed as lightermen in the same street on the same census. Is it possible to find an apprentice binding record for Henry and possibly the name of his father or date of birth please? I believe he may have been born about 1806.
Many thanks

Thank you so much for the information - wonder who George Cripps is? From what you say he must have been somehow related. Interestingly Frederick married Nov 4th 1811 in St Lukes Middlesex - a church which neither party had any connection with, Maybe because he shouldn't have been marrying at all :o :D

Hi Jan,
this thread is going back a bit (quite a bit, in fact!) Feb 2007 to one of your posts.
I have an ancestor George Cripps as a waterman master. He was master to his son, also George, about 1819.
I think the same George (snr) did his apprenticeship in 1788, which would mean he could have been born about 1762ish so he could have been the same George CRIPPS that was master for your Frederick GROOMBRIDGE.

If anyone else has any waterman apprentice binding info for the surname CRIPPS I would be most grateful as I am trying to find their Free Watermen licence numbers.
