Hi all,
I have got FOUR George Stockley's in my tree, all born around the same time (1822-6) from the same place (Corfe Castle, Dorset). I have set myself a challenge to sort out which is which.
Research has progressed quite well so far but I am now looking for parent/sibling confirmations such as birth or marriage certificates etc.
Please see following comments on my progress and what I already know.

Marriages (I think)
Betsey 1850 Wareham v8 p227 (Four different Stockleys married on the same page!)
Jane 1849 Epsom v4 p135 (very unsure about this one)
Ann 1843 Wareham v8 p187
Emily 1848 Weymouth v8 p263

My primary problem is that they all appear b1826 in the 1841. I have made some guesses from their address and some other hints in each census to connect up the 1841 entry to the 1851 entry but I don't feel this is a 'safe' connection.
I think only marriage certificates will reliably confirm who each George's parents are so if anyone has one or can suggest other methods of confirmation I would appreciate it.
Thanks all for your help.

And the last snippets:
In 1851 Betseys parents (Sticklands) are living with George and Betsey.
One of the 1841 censuses contains an Elizabeth Stockley b1791, probably a parent, and siblings Caroline and Charles. Address is West St.
One of the 1841 censuses contains probably parents Simon b1801 and Ann b1801 sibling Mary b1828. Address is Market Place.
Ann, in her 1851 census entry, appears with her sister Mary Damon as sister-in-law to her George.

Thanks All,
All good data! Thank You.
What I am primarily in need of is to connect each George to the correct parents.
>>george stockley married emily jane swyer 19th april 1848 fleet dorset.husbands family simon stockley Grin thats 1 down

witness on george stockley and mary coker's marriage was sarah damen who 2 yrs later married nathaniel stockley

alli

Coincidence? Probably not. See my comment earlier:
"Betsey 1850 Wareham v8 p227 (Four different Stockleys married on the same page!)"
It seems they were close-knit.

The two marriage cert arrived today:
1 Feb 1843 George Stockley (bac) - Ann Damon (spin)
Grooms father: Richard Stockley (lab)
Brides father: George Damon (lab)
Assumed baptism:
1822 13-JAN; George son of Richard & Sarah Stockley - Labourer
28 Nov 1850 George Stockley (wid) - Betsey Stickland (spin)
Grooms father: George Stockley (lab)
Brides father: Henry Stickland (lab)
Assumed baptism:
1823 07-SEP; George of George & Mary Stockley - Labourer
Conclusion follows.
Paul
-
In summary:
George (Betsy Stickland) father George
George (Ann Damon) father Richard
George (Emily Jane Swyer) father Simon
George (Jane ?) father Nathaniel
NB: The last is assumed from dob as Jane's husband was consistently b1825/6 in census. James & Sarah's son was baptised 1821.
Not sure what happened to the George baptised to James & Sarah. Perhaps he moved away, died, or didn't marry.
Thanks all for your help.
My next challenge is the untangling of the four Thomas' Stockley b1851/2, two of which are the sons of a George b1822-6. Watch this space. :)

And the final sad tale explaining the 'widower' status of the George-Betsey marriage:
Q1 1847 Wareham 8:192
George Stockley marries Maria Keats
Q1 1847 Poole 8:71
Maria Keats dies
This is just probable.

Its interesting that Mary Damon who is George Damon's daughter married Thomas Stockley around 1852. Yet another Stockley/Damon connection. She is the Mary Damon living with Ann Stockley on the 1851 census.
-
That's an interesting suggestion jacks. They certainly seem to be contemporary, she would have been about 23 in 1852 by my calculation.
Do you have anything more that makes you believe they are the same person?
Paul
-
The birthdate would suggest it. Mary is born Kingston 1828. The Mary Damon that Thomas Stockley marries shares this birthdate and place of birth.
I got this from the parish records at Dorchester. 16th November Mary Damon daughter of George and Mary Damon born Kingston Labourer
I am sure that I had noted down the marriage record somewhere but can't find it at the moment. I know it was before Mar 1852
-
I agree Jacks,
BMD shows Thomas' marriage 1852 Wareham 5a 46_
Ancestry shows Wareham 5a 468
There's an Elizabeth Damen also married on the same page! Oh what tangled webs they wove. :)
Hmm ... do I connect them or do I not .... a connection a little stronger than 'she is around the right age' would be nice but I have to admit I have accepted those before a few times.

...The Mary Damon that Thomas Stockley marries shares this birthdate and place of birth.
I got this from the parish records at Dorchester. !6th November Mary Damon daughter of George and Mary Damon born Kingston Labourer
Forgive me jacks. I misread.
So she is aged 23 in Dorchester PR? That would certainly clinch it for me.
Paul
-
Yes born 1828.
In subsequent census records she always gives her birthplace as Kingston.
-
1861 Census
Wareham Holy Trinity
Hyde Hill Tho. Stockley, 32, Claycutter, Dorset Corfe Castle
Mary Stockley, 33, Kingston.
This would again suggest the correct birthdate
:)
-
Thanks Jacks, those two have been bugging me for ages. :) Nice to know they are one and the same.
Paul
-
Your welcome...
now keep sorting out those twists and turns of our Stockleys
:)
-
Yes miss. :)
-
Has anyone got any further info on the George's?
-
Hi Morgan,
No - nothing further from me - but I would be interested in where your interest lies, as always with all things Stockley.
Thank you for posting on this very old thread - I had completely forgotten about the quandary of the Georges' Stockley.
