Title: Robbie Burns the poet
Post by: eryka91 on Saturday 04 December 04 08:40 GMT (UK)
I am trying to trace Andrew Brown who is a decendant of William Brown, father of Agnes Brown, mother of Robbie Burns. Andrew Brown married Jane Keith.

Hello Eryka91,

Just came across your listing.
We know through family documents that we have a connection through Janet BROWN, sister to Agnes (mother of Robert Burns).

Janet BROWN married Alexander HUTCHISON, and in turn their son Samuel HUTCHISON married Jane COWEN (COUAN).
Then their daughter Janet HUTCHISON married William BAIRD.
Their son Samuel BAIRD married Helen KEAN.
Then their daughter Janet Hutchison BAIRD married Robert Campbell BROWN, etc...

However our problem so far has been in proving the direct connection, because of the Birth Dates that are listed for Janet and Agnes BROWN, in relation to the Maternal Family of Robert BURNS (which I have come across on different websites), these dates do not quite coincide with the dates that we have.

Is your Andrew BROWN who married Jane KEITH, the son of Gilbert BROWN (father of Agnes BROWN)
I will have a look through my research and see what I can find.

Perhaps we may be able to help each other with our research.

I am researching a David Burnes b in Scotland abt 1700, family myth has it that he was related to Robert Burns. Don't know if that is true or not but does anybody recognize this name and bdate? He emigrated to the US where he ended up being an extensive landholder in MD, part of his landholdings ended up becoming downtown DC. He married the widow Ann Fleming (maiden name unk) about 1720. Presumably in Scotland but then again, that seems to be unknown.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

John Burness of Canada has spent many years creating a massive database of the BURNESS/BURNS families of NE Scotland, including the descendants of Robert BURNS, Scotland's national poet, his siblings, and his ancestors.

www address is http://www.burness.ca/

Enjoy !!

Well, I've emailed him, maybe he has something he hasn't added yet? It's a bit odd because he was quite a well-known figure in colonial America, even corresponded with George Washington. (He called him a 'canny Scot' which, we all know, is a kind euphemism for hard bargaining!)

I, too, am a descendant of David Burnes and his wife, the widow Anne Fleming.  I have quite alot of info about David and Anne's children and descendants, but need to find out where David was born.  Their grandson, David Burnes II, was the one that had the dealings with George Washington, I have copies of many of the letters between them, as well as estate papers that I would be happy to share.  David II is definitely said to be "Scot" but we have no idea where his grandfather came from, or when.  Very frustrating!

Would love to share info with you!
