I'm trying to find any info on the following:
Alexander Snowball b1826c Haydon Bridge married Ann Ferry 1847 and had 10 children, John 1848, William 1851, Joseph 1854, Jane A 1856, Isabella 1858, Robert 1860, Barbara 1865, Alexander 1867, Hannah 1869 and Elizabeth 1871.
By 1881 the family were living in Tudhoe. Any info much appreciated.

Hi Angelfish - Welcome to RootsChat :)
What sort of information are you looking for? :)
-
Hi Tati, well anything really, but particularly details of Alexanders parents and his date of death. I'm very new to this so am bumbling a bit, Elizabeth was my great grandmother so I have most of her details (except date of marriage) I think but I'm interested in fleshing out the details of the others, married names, children, occupations, dates of death absolutely anything. Also, if anyone has anything at all on Ann Ferry I would be very interested. Thank you.
-
I can't find him on the 1841 census.
The most likely marriage I see is:
March 1847 Vol 24 page 73
Durham registration district
Alexander Snowball to possibly Ann Ferry
The marriage cert would tell you Alexander's father's name ...

Hi Angelfish58
Alexander Snowball = Ann Ferry
at
St Mary's Church, Medomsley.. in 1847
The entry no for the marriage in the register is 165
If you contact Durham Records Office.. for a fee of £2 you can get a photocopy of the said marriage..
Yours The Vicars Wife
There's a death for a Alexander but born C 1816 on freebmd
Deaths Dec 1896
SNOWBALL Alexander 80 Sunderland 10a 352

Thank you Vicars Wife, I've noted those marriage details. The Alexander Snowball b1816c is, I think, a different person, he seems to be the popular one.
-
Hi All I have an Alexander Snowball bn c 1817 ish Witton Gilbert Son of Joseph Snowball and Eleanor Robinson who married on 12 August 1815 Lanchester Co Durham could this be him ? regards Dave
-
Hi Dave, I've just got the copy of the marriage entry this morning the details are:
Alexander Snowball, brickmaker Father: John Snowball, joiner
Ann Ferry, Father:Thomas Ferry, miner.
so not the same as yours, I think you have the popular one. ;)
Thank you everyone.

Hi Angelfish,
I may have a possible John in 1851:
HO107/2403 112 22
Whickham, Durham
John Snowball, head, 59, Joiner, b. Haydon Bridge Northumberland
Mary, wife, 49, b. Herham? Northumberland
George Burn, nephew, 19?, Joiner, b. do.
Tanja :)

Thank you, Tati, that sounds promising. I suppose I'll need Alexanders birth details now, I'm a bit stuck now it's pre 1837 as I'm new to all this. I suppose we could assume that Burn was Mary's maiden name, but equally he could be the son of a sister of Johns. Aaargh ;D
Cheers

Sorry, parish records aren't my speciality. Alexander's birth isn't on the IGI. However, what I can see on the IGI is:
Marriage John Snowball - Mary Burn
16 MAY 1837 Hexham, Northumberland
If these are yours then Mary probably wasn't Alexander's mother. Also it's quite disappointing - civil registration started on 1 July 1837 ... if they had married just a few weeks later, you could have access to a cert giving John's father's name :(
I still can't see Alexander in 1841 ... :-\
-
That's very interesting Tati, again that does sound promising and could well be a 2nd (or 3rd) marriage. Actually I'm happy with that as Mary seemed a bit young to be Alexanders mother. It just didn't have the right "feel" iyswim.
Alexander is what you might call elusive, 1881 and 1861 are all I've found of him up to now, although the family moved around a lot as nearly all 10 kids were born in different places.
Thank you for looking.

Alexander Snowball, head, 64, Labourer in Coke Yard, b Northumberland Hexham

Alexander, son, unm, 25, Brick Moulder, b. Witton Park

-
That's brilliant. Pensher could be a phonetic of Penshaw. What would I do without you? Thanks again.

Re Pensher/Penshaw: looks right 8)
Have found this site:
http://www.durhamrecordsonline.com/CensusInfo.php
where they say Birthplaces in 1851 or later: We have corrected various birthplace name spellings to make them more recognizable. For example, we change "Pensher" and "Painshaw" to "Penshaw"
-
That looks interesting, I'll check it out later, thank you.

Thanks Janis, it's Low Banwell, some of Thomas's siblings were baptised from Banwell House, I don't know if this is the same as Low Barnwell which is the closest I can find on modern maps.

No, but I have been researching for a Ferry friend who thought she was Irish...turns out her Ferrys have been in Durham for a LONG time. I have quite an extensive file on them.
