I am looking for information about James Handscombe. His birth place is given as Shiplane Beds. It has been suggested that this could be Sheeplane, Potsgrove. He married Charlotte Perkins in 1814, Saint Peter, Saint Albans, Herts.

Hello and Welcome to Roots Chat...
There are 3 James Handscombe's baptised in Potsgrove on IGI.
James 1746 Potsgrove
James 1840
James William 1874
There is an earlier one in Hockcliffe down the road.
These seem to put the name in the Sheep lane area. There are small cottages still just off the A5 and it is still Sheep Lane.
I have family that move around Sheep Lane/Potsgrove/Battlesden and then into Heath & Reach or Brickhill.

Hello, thanks I had found those 3 but the dates don't seem to fit. the only one that does was born in Langford, which is quite some distance away. Do your family have any links with Hertfordshire? He seems to have gone quite a way to get married and have not found any link as yet. This James is my GGG Grandfather.
-
Hi ...
The A5 that runs through this part of Bed s/Bucks/Herts, was in its time the major north -south link.
My family used it to travel south from Lincolnshire area to St Neots to Bedford to Brickhill to Leighton Buzzard, so the distance travelled may surprise you.
What date do you have for a birth of James?
Battlesden & Potsgrove both appear on IGI so he would show up if from there.
There is a marriage in Soulbury in 1770 of Jas Handscomb to Ann ,about 10 miles as the crow flies though. Not sure how well Heath and Reach is covered by IGI but I may be able to check through baptisms at the weekend.

As he seems a bit old at 38 for this to have been a first marriage, I wonder if there is an earlier one. Have you checked the 1814 marriage entry to see if there is any further detail eg widower; of the parish of xxx; and the names of the witnesses?
There's a marriage in 1805 in Flamstead, which is half way between Sheep Lane and St Albans, of a James Anscomb which might be worth checking out. I can't see a suitable baptism for this James either. (I've just noticed on the BVRI that an Adse Handscomb dau of James and Charlotte was baptised in Flamstead on 23 June 1816. The 1805 marriage would definitely be worth checking - but I can't see any other baptisms in Flamstead from the 1805 marriage)
Where did you see the Langford baptism which fits, as I can't find it?
According to the Hugh Wallis site Heath and Reach extracts on the IGI only start at 1813

Hi David....
The Langford baptism is 23 Dec1798 Father William
Mother Sarah.
Handscombes are still in Langford in 1891 with the marriage of a
James Handscomb age 25 son of George to
Louisa Elizabeth Balls age 20.
I can check Heath & Reach prior to 1813 .

Hi Tazzie,
I'd been looking for a James c1776. This James was 75 in 1851 so I think you can rule out the 1798 Langford James - also in 1851 there was a 50 year old James Hanscombe b Langford living in Pirton, who on the face of it may well have been the one who married in Ickleford in 1819. There's nothing extra on Langford transcript regarding the 1798 entry.
Handscombes were still in Langford in the 1960s, as I went to school with one!

|Hello I have since ruled the Langford James out of my search as his marriage doesn't fit with anything else. Found him on Familysearch and the marriage is also there. How does James fit into your family? I know that the marriage to Charlotte Perkins (1814) is correct as it fits and is verified by their daughters marriage cert.
-
Hello David
thanks for the suggestion about Flamstead. It is certainly the closest I have come across. Adse is an odd name, possibly mistranscribed?
The 1804 marriage is the wrong name.
James Handscomb was christened 23 Dec 1798 Langford
Father = William
Mother = Sarah
Have not yet visited any of the Record Offices so am a bit new at checking stuff other than using certificates I've obtained. Am considering visiting a Family History Center and looking at original stuff where I'm struggling. i believe you can request stuff to be sent to a Centre by arrangement which would be good as I am researching family in London, Wales and Hertfordshire.
-
Most people do look ups because they enjoy doing them,
not because they have any connections to the family being researched.
Speaking personally I tend to get more involved if it's a parish that I'm conversant with, Langford being a case in point.
I know nothing about Sheep Lane so leave it to those with local knowledge, like Tazzie.
His age in 1851 points to a birth c1776 as you said in your first post, and as there's no baptism on the IGI in Beds at around that time, you're struggling for any clues you can find. So my post of 12.13 yesterday remains pertinent - you need to check the parish registers for both marriages to see if there is anything which might help
Regards
David
Messages have crossed in cyberspace so I'll add a bit more in light of your post a moment ago. A FHC is your best bet. You can order microfilms of many different parishes but you can normally only do this in person, not by post or phone.

Hi Beagle.....

I will list what I have for each village ..but alas no James!

May 12 1782 Wm s Wm & Mary HANDSCOMB
William married Mary Ireland of Woburn Oct 1777
Mary wife of William buried Ap 22 1785

An Earlier marriage...1715 ap 17 Jos Hanscomb of Heath to
Ann Lawfoot of Potsgrove.
There is a marriage in 1798 in Leighton that is on IGI for....

When Ann & Joseph both die the are listed as ..of Heath..
The villages checked are ...Potsgrove

I will have a look at the nearby Bucks Villages ie Soulbury Grt Brickhill & Little Brickhill...there maybe a clue still to find.

Hi again Beagle....
Just re-reading my notes about the Hanscomb's and I have missed one bit...
I double checked the spallings of the name in the index and there was also the following entry....
Han(d)scomb ...also see Morris...
Now I admit I forgot to check it further so will do...however if James b @1776 is John's son Mary John's wife was Mary Ireland ..I will check the dates fully on that.
On 1851 Bucks census there are births listed as Little Brickhill...I have a book about Great Brickhill and it's families and none are mentioned there.
There is a chapel in Sheep Lane...it's now a house but I am not sure when it was built. It was a Wesleyan chapel and they used to be part of the Leighton Buzzard circuit( "speakers on the ciruit included my 3x great grandfather and two of hubbies rellies as well). So I will also see if I can get the records from there if they go back that far.
I will check out Bucks possibles in the week.

Hi....
Checked out Great Brickhill PR s today....
only 3 baptisms Elizabeth 1744 d John & Mary
Mary 1779 d John & Catherine
William 1771 s James & Ann.
The one marriage links us back to Potsgrove again...
John Hanscomb of Potsgrove to Catherine Bonnick otp
witnessed by Wm Hanscomb
Matthew Etheridge 1779.
Will check the others later.

Any progress at all in checking out those two marriages, particularly the earlier one, which if you're lucky might give his parish of residence at the time of the marriage (which is not necessarily the same as his parish of birth)?
Even if Tazzie finds a suitable looking baptism you've still got to link it somehow to the James in St Albans

In light of no other details I have found this one ....
Little Brickhill 1782 James Handscomb s/o John Handscomb & Sarah.....
They could be the John & Sarah who are in Potsgrove to Baptis Jos. in 1786.
Again just a possible.
Has a post been added for details of the marriage?
