Hi there...

Oh dear... a daughter without internet access in her room  has nightmare potential and needs sorting fast! ;D

Did it used to work and now it doesn't?

Or has it never worked?

If it has never worked...have you set the computer (ie the actual one in her room)  up for wifi?  You have   to do each one in the house individually and put in special codes.

Do you have other computers in the house and do they work ok?

 ;D

Go to control panel internet connections right click the wirles network icon and check properties.
It sounds as if your wifi has dropped its key etc.

Is the wireless connection turned off?

There is a troubleshooter.

The Local Area Network is a cabled connection rather than a wireless one so I don't think that's linked.  Did she used to have an icon in the bottom right corner showing how strong her signal was?  If she did and it says she's no longer connected then she needs to double click on it and enter in the numbers, which for my wireless were on the bottom of the wireless router.

The main hub thing which sends the signal out, so presumably the one down where you are.  The one she'll have in her room is one which detects the signals.  Different manufacturers will make them differently though but they'll all have a password, known as a WEP or WPA key.  It might be useful digging out any relevant manuals.

Hi Bash  :-*

Do you know what make and model of wireless router you have? (the wireless box that the internet cable is plugged into!) If its linksys they have a nice little program that you can run to set it up again.
Let me know what model of router you have and I'll do some digging around for you.

You can ask her to check if her laptop is recognising her wireless card. If she goes to the control panel and selects network connection, can she see the wireless connection, it may say its disabled. First thing to do is try to reconnect by right click on it and selecting connect.

Unfortunately I'm not sure - I don't have wireless where I am.  Is one of them a 13 digit code?  I think it's the serial code you need, but I'm not certain.  The manuals should say, if you still have them.

Problem with wireless, is that you can't see the WEP key from your pc, to change it you need to access the router software - then you can see it. All the pcs attached have to have the same key or they can't connect.  Thats where these little setup programs come in. you set up one pc then copy the settings to all the wireless pcs. Takes minutes to do and no mistakes. But and its a big BUT the program is different for each wireless router manufacturer.

ok not to worry Bash. I shall take a look at the netgear site to see what they have to say.
She might find she she just lost temporary connection and it works when she switches back on. If not then she needs do the troubleshooting steps. Of checking to see if her network card in the pc is working first before touching settings etc. I shall pm you with anything I find. I also have a wonderful website which is manned by an ex ntl engineer who troubleshoots wireless connects for free  ;D I'll see if he has anything on it!

There are no cables for the wireless (PCI) card is slotted in the back of the pc and there is a little antenae but no  cables.

The very first trouble shooting steps is to switch everything off in order PC, router then modem.
then turn the items back on in reverse order
Modem, wait for the lights to flash across then flicker
Router, again wait for the lights to flash and then flicker
then  pcs / laptops.

Check the lights on the modem and router are flashing as they should. Don't think the modem is faulty as you can still get on the internet downstairs with ethernet cable attached to the router.

Next step is to check if the wireless card in the pc is still being recognised check in the network connections to see if the wireless is there (As previous message) If its not being recognised then reinstall the driver might be necessary. but then the wireless network will need to be set up again and you will need the settings. Thats when things get difficult! So don't touch the settings until last resort.

One other thing she may try before touching the settings is to clear the cookies and do a spyware/virus check.... can happen with teenagers and don't I KNOW IT! ::) been there and done that with mine.
