Title: Shirrefs/Gordons of Craig Castle Rhynie
Post by: learmond on Tuesday 08 May 07 16:30 BST (UK)
James Francis Gordon Shirrefs (or Shirrefs Gordon) was my husbands great, great grandfather.

My husbands great grandfather was James's son John Lumsden Gordon Shirrefs, (married to Elsie Spring and previously married to Elizabeth Cree)

If anyone can help with any information regarding John Lumsden Gordon Shirrefs, it would be most helpful.

Thanks a lot,

Jean Gordon

Hi Jean

Not finding anything in Rhynie for Shirrefs but there are several listed in Scotland;s People in Aberdeen area. Howver can confirm there is no marriage for James Shirrefs to either Elsie Spring or Elizabeth Cree pre 1855

Without any dates is difficult to find out more.

Ann

Hi Ann,

    Thank you for your reply.

The date of John Lumsden Gordon Shirrefs marriage to Elsie Spring was April 1897 in the district of Marleybone.
The address given was Knowsie House, Aberdeenshire

They had a son Ian Lional Victor Lumsden Gordon Shirrefs in 1901 in Hastings, this is our relative.

They also had a son James (Francis? ) born approx. 1898, this is the relative I cannot find any information on, he may have died in infancy, all I have is a birth certificate.

If you could help it would be appreciated.

Jean

Hi Jean

Unfortunately births after 1906 are not available on line via Scotland's People. However you can email the General Registrar for Scotland who will be able to provide the details for you. The records at GROS go up to 2006.

Cheers

Ann

Hi Ann,

I stated the birth date of James  date as 1998, this should have read 1898.

Also the Marraige should have read1897

Hi jean

Nothing coming up for a death for James that would match a birth year of 1898 +/- 5. There are some in Aberdeenshire on Scotland's People who would have been born later.

To check these you'd need to invest in some credits at Scotland's People and work your way through therm.

In terms of John I have found the following at SP which I believe to be his first marriage to Elizabeth Cree.

1892 SHIRREFS-GORDON JOHN LUMSDEN CREE ELIZABETH TAYLO DENNISTOUN GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/03 0396

There is no marriage of course on SP for Elsie because it took place in London (Tho I did check just in case)

then there is Elizabeth's death cert 1934 SHIRREFS ELIZABETH T   CREE F 68 SCOTSTOUN AND YOKER GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/23 0024

Hope this is helpful

Ann

Re: Gordon's of Craig

My great grandparents were - John Gordon Lumsden Shirrefs (formerly John Lumsden Shirrefs Gordon) & Elizabeth Taylor Cree.  Also,  Jean Gordon's husbands g.g.g. grandfather was Lt.-Col. Alexander Shirrefs - the (1st) Lumsden Shirrefs family,  prior to 1870,  were cousins rather than ancestors.

Finally,  I may have a photograph of Ian Lionel Victor Lumsden Gordon Shirrefs (c.1919) or perhaps his brother,  James Francis Gordon Lumsden Shirrefs.

Have limited access to Email & the internet.     Regards BrianJohn.

The descendants of David Shirras/Shirreff (etc) & Jean Lunan,  from about 1780 onwards,  settled on the following spelling of their surname Shirrefs despite determined efforts by session clerks and others to alter it !

There are three 'Shirrefs' gravestones in St. Nicholas churchyard - descendants of David Shirrefs & Jean Lunan inc. spouses,  unfortunately,  this information does not appear in A. Strath Maxwell's MI book or A&NEFHS's online MI Index.

Hope this information sheds a little light on the Shirrefs family.    BrianJohn

Jean,
I have James Francis Gordon (Shirrefs) as the younger brother of my descendant.
A family member gave me a handwritten tree which has James Francis Gordon Shirrefs (14th of Craig) marrying Barbara Shirrefs Smith (possibly also a cousin as there was a lot of it). There is one child of this marriage on the tree - Gordon Shirrefs (1862-1916) who marries Elizabeth Cree (1870-1934), but the tree extends no further beyond this.

There is a pdf file on the web about the Gordons and the title at http://ads.ahds.ac.uk/catalogue/adsdata/PSAS_2002/pdf/vol_064/64_096_111.pdf

regards,
an Australian Shirrefs

Hi Brian John,

Do you have any further information of John Gordon Lumsden Shirrefs, I think he had 3 sons to Elizabeth Cree.

He married Elsie Spring in 1897 and had James & Ian, although we have a birth certificate for James born in Aberdeen 1898, we have no other record at all, he may have died as an infant, we are unsure.

We also have John Gordon Lumsden Shirrefs as an officer in the 16th lancers, again we cannot find anything to confirm this, his surname quite possibly could be Gordon during his time with the military.

Can you help with any of this.

rgds,
Jean Gordon

My grandfather was William Gordon Lumsden Shirrefs. He was a son of John Gordon Lumsden Shirrefs and Elizabeth Taylor Cree. His older brother was John Francis Gordon Lumsden Shirrefs. John and Elizabeth divorced on 24 March 1896. John died on 6 April 1919 and Elizabeth on 12 Jan 1934. I have documents showing this information that I will try to upload.

Divorced Elizabeth
Actually divorced by Elizabeth.

Plenty of newspaper reports about the divorce in 1896. His address was given as Knowsie, Lonmay. She petitioned on grounds of adultery, and was granted custody of the two children (only two? There were apparently three with her in 1921)
